Castel Sant'Angelo

It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. It is also known serving as a fortress, prison, and Papal residence. Castel Sant’Angelo (Castle of the Holy Angel) is a towering cylindrical fortress in Rome, originally built as a mausoleum for the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD. Over the centuries, it was transformed into a papal fortress, a prison, and now a museum. Connected to the Vatican by the Passetto di Borgo (a secret passage), it played a key role in protecting popes during times of danger. Its dramatic architecture and rich history make it a major attraction in Rome. We spent 2 hours going through the various rooms. And the view from the top over Rome was amazing. One should take the time, the bar/resturant should be avoided as rhe drinks are three times more expensive. There is a free water drinking system near the entrance

From ancient emperors to medieval popes, Castel Sant’Angelo has witnessed it all! The audio guide did an excellent job of bringing these stories to life. The best part? Watching the sunset over the Tiber River from the rooftop. It was pure magic!
