Kapowui is a family run business and and an icon of southern California.
We live, eat, and dream surfing and teach surfing because we want to share our love and stoke for the sport. This is a life choice for us and what gives our lives meaning.
All of Kapowui's instructors are imbued with the Aloha spirit, live within blocks of the beach (4 of them live in surf vans), surf every day and have many years teaching experience.

Your lesson includes all the equipment - surfboard, wet suit, and instructor. Your lesson will take place on the border of Venice and Santa Monica, where the sandy bottom is safe and perfect for beginner lessons. Your 1.5 hour lesson includes. The first 30 minutes of your lesson is done on the beach, covering board design and dynamics, wave dynamics, ocean safety, surfing safety, surf etiquette, pop-up technique and form. The remainder of your time is spent in the water, surfing with your instructor. Just show up wearing your swim suit, sun screen, and a smile. We'll supply the equipment and good vibes.

5.00Overall amazing experience all around. The guys were all super nice and very experienced surfers. They taught us well and we were riding waves in no time. If you are in the area and want to try surfing definitely check them out. We had never surfed before but they made it so easy.

5.00Really awesome lesson for my 8 year old son. Friendly, and super effective lesson. He stood on the board multiple times even though it was his first lesson. I highly recommend these guys. They’re fantastic. Totally worth every penny, and very reasonably priced.

5.00My son is an experienced surfer, our instructor taught him so many new techniques. The instructors are for all over the world and are they are super friendly and good people. Kapowui treats you like family. would not go anywhere else when visiting Cali....

5.00Martin was so friendly and genuine. You could tell he really wanted everyone to have a great time. The instructor I had (Will) was awesome - super helpful to me as a first time surfer, but also helpful to my boyfriend who has surfed a handful of times and just wanted to tips.

5.00I went out with Pat and he was super chill, the waves were great. Had a better experience than my first surf lesson in Waikiki. Pat gave critical help to keep me on the board. I made it all the way to the shore multiple times where before I couldn't stay up at all. I'll definitely be going back

Liam was our instructor who was super patient breaking down the instructional part of the lesson, and giving us pointers throughout the lesson to better our form and make us better surfers. 10/10 would recommend to anyone learning to surf or wanting help improving their skills.

5.00So much fun. After 20-25 minutes on land, my family was in the water catching waves. Our instructor was personable and really cared that they 'got up'. Kept giving tips and helping them succeed.
