The Danakil Depression is the northern part of the Afar Triangle or Afar Depression in Ethiopia, a geological depression that has resulted from the divergence of three tectonic plates in the Horn of Africa.

Erta Ale
We start our day by driving to Erta Ale (which means smoky mountain in Afar language). Erta Ale ranks one of the most alluring and physically challenging natural attractions anywhere in Ethiopia. It is a shield volcano with a base diameter of 30 km and 1km square caldera at its summit. Erta Ale contains the world’s only permanent lava lake. It is 613 meters, with a lava lake, one of only five in the world, at the summit. It is notable for being the longest existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century. (may not be as active as before and activity at flank eruption slows down.) We start early 9:00 AM, drive to Dodom (at the base of Erta Ale). This is may be one of the roughest roads in the world. The 80 km distance may take about 6 hrs passing through changing the landscape of solidified lava, rock, sand and occasional palm-lined oasis. After passing several small hamlets scattered here and there in this deserted land, you will arrive at Dodom camping site, located about 17km from Erta Ale. Dinner will be served around 17:00 o’clock. After a short break, trek up to Ertale at 20:00 hours. Camels will be transporting all the camping materials and some food (sleeping materials like light mattresses and mat and water) to the rim of the volcano, where we spend the night watching the dramatic action of the boiling lava. You will spend the night on top of the mountain, at the rim of the Volcano.

Erta Ale
Early Morning sunrise at the northern one corresponds to the main pit crater and walk 5 minutes for the southern and central pits could either corresponds to an ancient pit, or to a simple collapse structure. The main pit-crater, 200 m deep and 350 m across, is sub-circular and three-storied. The smaller southern pit is 65 m wide and about 100 m deep. Descend from Erta Ale around 9 am Dodom – Leave back to Dodom after an early breakfast, if possible at 07:00 o’clock. You will reach the latest at 10:30 o’clock at the camp, where you will be relaxing. As soon as possible, drive to reach the mythical Lake Giulietti (or Lake Afrera)(optional may not be available during summer time), a saltwater lake located more than100 meters below sea level, in one of the deepest depressions of the planet. Because of the picturesque landscape, it is interesting to visit the salt flats where the Afar people obtain the salt by evaporating the water of the lake., continue to Erbiti and proceed Abaala/ Hamed ela

Morning tour Drive to Ragad (Asebo), the place where the localities are mining salt. Look the activity of workers breaking salts from the ground, cutting into rectangular pieces and loading on camels. You drive ahead to Dallol and visit the difference landscape formed by volcanic activity, Dallol + Lake Assal + camel caravans. Excursion to Dallol (116 meters below sea level, one of the lowest places in the world) colorful salts mining, visit Lake Assal, follow up camel caravans (No camel caravan on July, August, and early September) and walk with the Afar people. Drive back to semera and fly back to addis. End of Danakil tour

5.00It was beyond amazing! Everything was so well planned from start to finish. The team was incredibly hospitable, attentive to everyone's individual needs, and took great care of us throughout the trip. Our guide, Aman, was on top of everything. He kept the energy high, made sure everyone was having a great time, and always looked out for the group. Our driver, Dani, is simply the best! His driving skills are exceptional, and he's such a kind, fun, and wonderful person. He brought so much positive energy and made the whole tour even more enjoyable. A special shoutout to Chef Hadgu—his soups, crepes, and fried fritters were absolutely delicious. Every meal was flavorful, and he made sure we were always well fed. This experience exceeded my wildest expectations. The tour group was professional, respectful, and made me feel safe and comfortable the entire time. I would absolutely love to travel with them again!

5.00ETT tour staffs are so kind. Aman,our tour guide is very kind and friendly. He always did his best and support our members. Ermyas,our driver is good personality and drove safely. Hadge, our chef cooked traditional food and the taste and amount was so nice! I miss our members.if I join the tour again, I want to go with these staffs.

5.00What an incredible journey this was to hike through sulfuric lakes, drive through salt flats, hike up an active volcano, and swim in salted ponds. Aman is a fantastic, thoughtful, and brilliant guide who showed us a great time; really trying to understand our needs and adapt the tour accordingly. Daniel was a great driver as well, who helped us tour Semera to look for some local food and shops. Would highly recommend booking with these guys.

The landscapes and natural beauty are simply breathtaking — from the otherworldly salt flats and shimmering lakes to the rugged, dramatic terrain that feels truly unique. Every moment was filled with wonder. What made the trip exceptional, though, was the warm hospitality and care from our team. Guide Aman, driver Abiti, and chef Hadgu treated us like family from the very first minute. Aman’s knowledge, friendly manner, and safe guidance helped us fully appreciate the area’s history and natural wonders. 5.00Our trip to the Danakil Depression (Dallol, Lake Assale, and Hamed Ela) was absolutely incredible, thanks to this amazing team who took exceptional care of us: Guide Aman: Highly knowledgeable, attentive, and gave brilliant explanations that made the sights come alive. Driver Ermyas: Superb driving skills. Navigated the challenging desert terrain smoothly and made us feel 100% safe. Chef Awet: A true artist in the desert! 5.00Just got back from an epic trip to the Depression and let me tell you this place is a must see if you're an adventure seeker and visiting Ethiopia. Our trip was only 2 days but we covered a lot of ground incliding all the big attractions there (Salt flats, salt pool, salt lake, acid pools, and salt columns. We decided to opt out of the volcano as the eruption in 2025 pretty much destroyed the lava lake and created a massive cluster of smoke. We slept open air which seemed a bit scary at first but was one of the highlights! The sky was spectacular. It was super hot but there was a late night breeze. Our guide Aman, Driver Ermyas, and Chef Awet were our team and they were phenomenal. I highly recommend them if you decide to book.

5.00Danikal depression Danikal depression trip was amazing. Our guide Aman is very experienced. He took good care of all of us and made sure we were okay as the temperature could get very high at the depression and it could be easily got dehydrated. He is also very informative and it helped me to understand the culture as well as the site. He is also a great photographer! He was able to capture many lovely moments for me! We had a chef Hadgu camping with us and he was able to prepare meals for all of us in no time. Our driver Daniel was also very experienced, especially the road is not nicely paved with different conditions.
