The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre
Your guide will meet you at The Sill at 10:00 am. As The Sill also opens at 10:00 am, you'll have time to use the facilities before we catch the 10:12 am AD122 bus to Housesteads. Any extra luggage or clothing can be securely stored in a locked vehicle during the walk. Please wear suitable footwear, such as hiking boots, walking shoes or trail shoes. Trainers are usually fine in dry conditions, but if the ground is wet, some sections can be slippery. Hadrian's Wall has its own microclimate, so we recommend dressing in layers and bringing a waterproof jacket, as it can be breezy on the Wall. Well-behaved dogs are very welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times. If you arrive after 10:10 am, you can still catch the 10:17 am AD122 bus from its second stop. If you miss that bus, you can meet us at Housesteads Visitor Centre car park by 10:25 am, where we'll join you before setting off.
Vindolanda
At The Sill, we'll board the 10:12 am AD122 bus to Housesteads. The journey offers a unique perspective of Hadrian's Wall, with elevated views across the surrounding countryside and Roman landscape. Along the way, your guide will point out and share fascinating stories about key landmarks, including the ancient Stanegate Road, rare in-situ Roman milestones, the hidden remains at Causeway House, Vindolanda Roman Fort, and the dramatic Great Whin Sill. It's the perfect introduction to the area's rich Roman heritage before arriving at Housesteads to begin your walk. Please note: We remain on the bus throughout the journey and do not alight at Vindolanda.

The tour guide Claire was excellent and her knowledge of the subject was first rate. Even although the weather could have been better it did not dampen our day.

Great walk along Hadrians wall. Claire did a great job with pacing and historical facts and details. Her walk goes along the best stretch. Without a guide the wall walk is not the same. Plus - Claire has a great sense of humor.

The walking tour of Hadrian’s Wall with Claire was exactly what I was looking for—a boots-on-the-ground (literally) experience of the wall. Claire is a lovely person—kind, thoughtful, fun (the tutu was the first clue!) and very knowledgeable about the history of Hadrian’s Wall. She also grew up and lives in the area, so is happy to help if you have questions or need recommendations. Claire also took photos and videos of me during the walk, incorporating them into a highlight reel that I absolutely loved. I highly recommend this tour!

When I found myself with a few days open in months of planned travel across the UK and Europe, I thought hard and long about where I wanted to spend those bonus days. I certainly knew about Hadrian’s Wall from history books but had never really thought I’d have the opportunity to explore it in person. So…why not? I poked around on the web, looking for something that would be challenging, but not impossible. That’s exactly what Claire of Curius Compass delivered. She and her partner Katie organize small group tours of the wall, and mine was with Claire and one other traveller. We started out at the Roman Fort and made our way along the wall for just over four miles, all the while learning about the history of what we were seeing—which was more stunning and scenic at every turn. Not gonna lie-I’m not a professional hiker by any stretch, and my knees are constant reminders of that. Throughout the walk, Claire was kind and patient, and she had a great sense of humour (and adventure-she clearly likes what she does). I guess that’s to be expected. But what’s important to know is that she also went WAY above and beyond, connecting with me right after I made my reservation with suggestions of things to do and see both in Haltwhistle where I was staying and in nearby towns (including the best ways to get there and back). Although there was a bus service to our meeting point the day of our walk, she was kind enough to pick me up, and she supplied me with hiking poles. Then to top it off, she sent a note along with a dozen pictures and videos after the hike! While I took my own of course, hers are amazing and I’m so pleased to have them as a memory of a great day in Northumberland at Hadrian’s Wall. 10/10 would recommend -- reasonable cost for the adventure—not that you can put a price on an excellent and memorable experience. If you’re in the area and looking for an opportunity to learn about the amazing history of the area, you can’t go wrong with Curius Compass!
