Noboribetsu
8:00 AM: Gather at Sapporo Station and board an air-conditioned bus with a professional guide to begin today’s journey through Hokkaido. 9:30 AM: Arrive at the first stop, Noboribetsu (approximately 60 minutes). Jigokudani (Hell Valley): A volcanic crater formed around 10,000 years ago, located near Lake Toya. The area spans 450 meters in diameter, with constant white smoke, barren land, and a strong sulfur smell, earning its nickname as a “hell-like” valley. This natural wonder offers a glimpse into Hokkaido's volcanic activity. (Accessible during winter) Oyunuma Pond: Formed by an eruption of Mt. Hiyoriyama, this steaming crater lake features 130°C sulfur springs, providing hot spring water to local inns. A viewing platform offers panoramic views, or visitors can take a closer look by walking to the lakeside. However, trails and the outdoor footbath area are closed during winter for safety reasons.
Lake Toya
12:00 PM: Visit the Lake Toya area Showa Shinzan and Bear Ranch Showa Shinzan: A volcanic mountain formed after a strong earthquake in 1943. Standing at 398 meters, it remains active, with white smoke emanating from its reddish-brown surface. Declared a national monument in 1957, it continues to grow as a “new mountain.” Bear Ranch: Located near the ropeway entrance, the ranch houses over 100 Hokkaido brown bears, the largest wild mammals in the region. Visitors can feed the bears and observe their playful antics. Lake Toya Scenic Spots Lake Toya Overview: A crater lake with a diameter of 10 kilometers, covering 70.72 square kilometers, and a depth of 180 meters. The lake is part of Shikotsu-Toya National Park and remains unfrozen year-round. Toya Lake Observatory: Offers stunning views of the lake, Nakajima Island, Mt. Yotei, Showa Shinzan, and Mt. Usu. Lake Toya and Mount Usu were worth seeing, the tour guide was very helpful and the tour itself was very well arranged. However, please DO NOT go to the bear ranch. It was the saddest and the most unsettling place I have ever seen in Japan. There were so many bears in small cages with absolutely no consideration for their welfare. That part of the tour was disgusting and I highly advice against using any of your money to support such an unethical place. That is s tourist trap if I ever saw one.

If you want a drive through the lush countryside of Hokkaido with exposure to its volcanic activity, this is a good tour. Don’t expect much information or involvement from the guide.

I had a great day on the Lake Toya and Otaru full-day tour. Even though we were a large group of 20 people, the entire day was carefully planned, and everything ran perfectly on time. Our tour guide, Ms Sakura, was wonderful. She had excellent attention to detail and kept everyone moving smoothly. Hell Valley (Jigokudani) was incredibly interesting to see. I ended up skipping the Bear Ranch since the admission isn't included in the tour price and I didn't bring enough cash for a ticket, but it was nice to have the downtime. Otaru was beautiful, if a little touristy, but I really enjoyed doing some window shopping at the local shops. Overall, it was a highly organised, lovely day out. Thanks to Ms Sakura for looking after us so well!

A lovely day trip with perfect weather. The vehicle assigned to the trip was a small, crowded minibus that was not suitable for a long trip. The trip ended earlier than planned and it is a shame not to have been allocated more time about 45 minutes especially at the last and charming stop

We had 1 full day and chose this tour, as it covered a lot of interesting parts of the island. We lucked out getting Jay as our guide, he was wonderful! Jay had a lot of interesting information that he shared with the group and answered all of our questions. We had just the right amount of time to spend in each unique and interesting place. Jay took great photos of my husband and I, so we could both be in the photos. It was hard to pick a favorite spot that we visited. Hell Valley was interesting, Lake Toya is stunning, I loved feeding and watching the bears at the Bear Ranch. Otaru was one of my favorites, we loved the steam clock and music box store. We enjoyed dessert and tea at La Tao. All of Jay's recommendations were spot on, we knew how to make the best use of our time. We also appreciated the food suggestions and would've missed out on the yummy pudding balls if we hadn't been given the heads up. This is an excellent tour, we really enjoyed everything we saw and did, plus having a great guide made all the difference in the world.

A great tour. Covered a lot of area without driving ourselves! Rii is a great tour guide. She told us a lot of history of this area and provided us with additional restaurants even after the tour has ended. Strongly recommend this tour!

Good: Hell Valley was great to see. The volcanic landscape was awesome Otaru was a lovely town with lots of unusual shops and eating places. Loved the steam clock. The guide was fantastic and gave good details despite being hampered by the weather Bad: alot of time was spent on the bus travelling between sights.....of the 10 hrs about 7 is on the bus. We were very unfortunate that we had a very bad weather day so Lake Toya was totally covered in mist...I think this would have been pretty otherwise and we couldn't really see much out of the windows as they got very misted up. Minivan was a real bone shaker.

A very interesting trip, beautiful scenery, good guide must-see!A visit to the bear sanctuary is not included in the price; you have to pay separately. I didn't understand this from the excursion description.

Fabulous tour to amazing locations. Wouldn't have been able to do all locations in one day by ourselves and considering our limited stay in Hokkaido, this really came in handy and the price was very reasonable as well. Sophie/Sakura-san was very helpful, giving detailed instruction on the meeting point with pictures the day before. And throughout the day she was great as well, providing highlights of all the location and taking pictures when needed. She even gave us recommendations for dinner, which we are very thankful for since it was delicious. The only downside was the vehicle was quite small so difficult to fit the shopping within such limited space.
