5.00Bertjan is the best field guide I've ever had. Funny, warm, open — a genuine pleasure to spend time with. His knowledge is unexpectedly wide-ranging and spans animal behavior, ecology, folklore and anthropology, among other things. I had the good fortune to experience two trips into Kruger a week apart, which gave me a direct guide comparison. The typical guide does something like this — speed manically through the park, announce the name of the animal, allow two minutes for photos, deploy your two canned jokes, and repeat. Lunch is eaten alone, because why would you actually want to talk to your guests? Bertjan does something different. He stops and gives you time to actually observe the animals. He explains what the animals are doing and why, traces the folklore woven around them. He points out the trees and birds and insects most people blow right past. He eats lunch with you and seems to genuinely enjoy the conversation. The quality of your guide determines the quality of your experience in a place like Kruger. There's a lot riding on that choice. Choose Bertjan.

5.00We joined Bertjan for two tours to Kruger National Park. Both were exceptional, from pick up to drop off. All of the logistic comforts for the day and drive were considered - blankets for the cooler temperatures, coffee and bathroom stops, and extra water if needed during the drive. But most notably, Bertjan’s knowledge and passion for the land, its people and history, and of the animals and plants inhabiting, his gregarious personality and insightful perspectives, and his consideration with taking time to stop to educate and tell stories, and allow for pictures based on everyone’s interests, made both tours completely enjoyable and informative. We were even so lucky to see a white lioness at sunrise, wild dogs at sunset, and vervet monkeys misbehaving at lunch. I already can’t wait to see more of South Africa, and Bert would be the first choice for any tours!

5.00I got to spend 2 days with Bertjan visiting Kruger and the Blyde River Canyon. Best 2 days of my trip to this area! Excellent communication, punctual, and fantastic service. From local history, cultural mythology, all creatures great and small, geography as well as interesting and amusing anecdotes Bertjan makes the places you visit come alive! He pays attention to everyone’s interests and supports everyone’s needs in a kind and unobtrusive way that makes everyone feel welcome and included. He is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about his country and his work. He is a true customer service superstar! You will not find a better guide, book with Bertjan! You will not be disappointed!
