Considered one of the best treks in Nepal, the circular trek around Manaslu is a less busy alternative to the classic Annapurna Circuit Trek. Hiking from the steamy terrace fields of rice in the lowlands to the snowbound Larkya La Pass near the Tibetan border is a physically challenging trek. Being remote, rich in local culture, and stunning scenery, we think it’s worth it. Some of the highlights include the Budi Gandaki River gorge, where icy turquoise water flows over waterfalls and under suspension bridges. And the 5,167m Larkya La pass, where crampons may be needed. From the pass, stupendous views lay behind and ahead – including a great glacial cirque and Annapurna II towering above other mountains. This remote area still has a pioneering expedition feel, much different from the more trekked routes. If you like more isolation and less trekkers on the trail, inexplicable natural beauty, and are physically fit, this trek is worth exploring.

You can take a bus or a bus/ local jeep combo to the starting point of the trek. A private jeep is also an option you might want to consider as the road is long, dusty, and bumpy. The local buses and jeeps will stop on the highway for lunch and toilet breaks. Your own jeep is more flexible, of course.

After the bumpy ride yesterday, it’s great to get out and start walking today. Already you feel like you are in the wilds as the road is rocky and narrow as you pass through sal forests, along rivers, passed waterfalls, and high cliffs. Some villages are on the way, mainly of Gurung and Ghale peoples. Lunch will be taken in one of the villages, perhaps with fresh local milk and yogurt. At Nyali Khola (river), there is a rocky edge where locals and others come to pray to the local river and mountain deities to keep them safe on the trail. As the river trail winds up and down, you will encounter mule trains. Please stand at the trail's hillside (not the drop side) when they pass to avoid slipping downhill! Overnight in Maccha Khola (literally ‘fish river’).

Today we follow the Buri Gandaki River on a trail that twists along the river. In the forests, there is a chance to see monkeys and langurs. Walking on, we reach Gurung villages, home to many shepherds, until we reach Tatopani (‘hot water) where you can soak in the warm waters. But don’t get too relaxed; the day is not finished yet! Crossing the Bhuri Gandaki by a suspension bridge, there is another cantilever bridge to cross further on to reach Jagat. Jagat is a flagstoned Gurung village, significant as it is from here you are entering the Manaslu Restricted Area. Overnight at Jagat.

Today we walk past several mani walls (stone walls with Buddhist mantras carved into the stones) as the villagers are heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. With Tibet being so close, many locals wear Tibetan dress and follow a traditional Tibetan lifestyle. Lush terraces, fir, oak, rhododendron forests, and rocky hillsides are the order of the day. There are also some fine paintings on the gate arches that we pass through before Sho village. Overnight at Lho, where the views are stunning of Manaslu (8,163m) and Manaslu North (7,157m).

Acclimatization helps prevent altitude-related illness. But that doesn’t mean a day of rest! The best way to acclimatize is to remain active. There are some choices as to where you can hike today - Pungyen Gompa on the east of the Nubri Valley, Manaslu Base Camp, or Birendra Tal (lake). The hikes will take around 2 hours, and a packed lunch can be eaten while relaxing alongside the trail. If you feel particularly tired, opt for the lake walk, which is shorter. Manaslu Base Camp requires a bit more effort as it is 4,400m. But we walk slowly and keep well hydrated.

Today we reach the highest point of the trail. We will cross the Larkya La pass (5,160m). In bad weather or snow, it is very challenging but still doable. But we must pass before the afternoon, so we will get up early this morning. The views from the pass are amazing - Himlung (7,126m), Kang Guru (6,981m), and Annapurna II (7,937m) in the Annapurna Range. After taking in the views, it’s about a 3-hour walk downhill, viewing huge icefalls and mountains on the way. We can also see Pongkar Tal between the Pongkar and Salpudanda Glaciers. Jay Tamang was my guide, and I had the best time possible. Not only did he know the ins and outs of the trail, but he also provided the warmest hospitality and facts about the places/mountains that we saw. He was constantly asking me if I was doing okay and needed to rest/eat. He even brought varieties of snacks and fruits to be enjoyed at the trail or at the teahouses! With it being the offseason for the trek, we rarely encountered other individuals in the trek, but it never felt like that because Jay would always try to have conversations. I would highly recommend Jay to be your guide!

  • Bishal: The Guide Who Made Nepal Unforgettable

    sstuttaford,10 thg 6, 2026

    - Đánh giá từ Tripadvisor

I cannot recommend Bishal highly enough. From the moment I met him in the hotel lobby the evening before our trek began, I knew we were in good hands. He was exceptionally thorough in preparing us for the journey ahead, carefully explaining the equipment we would need, what to expect on the trail, and answering every question with patience and clarity. What makes Bishal exceptional is not only his professionalism and experience, but also his ability to connect with people. He is open, curious, knowledgeable, and genuinely interested in those around him. Throughout the trek, our group included people with different abilities, walking speeds, and expectations. Bishal managed this effortlessly. Nobody ever felt rushed, left behind, or made to feel inadequate. Every day he briefed us on the following day’s route and conditions, ensuring everyone felt prepared and confident. One of the things I appreciated most was the pace he set. Too often, hiking can become focused on reaching the next destination. With Bishal, the journey itself was just as important as the destination. We stopped at beautiful viewpoints, took time to rest, enjoy snacks, and appreciate our surroundings. Lunch was always a proper break, and there was time to interact with local people and enjoy the villages. Every day flowed naturally and seemed perfectly organized without ever feeling rigid. His ability to adapt to changing conditions was particularly impressive. On one day, heavy snow was expected on a section of the route. Rather than following the itinerary blindly, Bishal carefully assessed the conditions and recommended an alternative. One of the stronger trekkers continued on a higher route with him, while I chose a different excursion to a nearby lake accompanied by another member of the team. That decision led to one of the most memorable experiences of my trip, including an unexpected visit to a local temple where I was able to observe prayers. Later that day, we all reunited at the tea house. Bishal’s flexibility allowed each person to have the best possible experience. His attention to individual needs was equally remarkable. Early in the trek, I mentioned that I would prefer a private room if possible. From that moment onward, he consistently planned ahead with the tea houses to arrange one whenever accommodation allowed. In remote mountain lodges this is not always possible, but the fact that he remembered and made the effort throughout the trek demonstrated how attentive he was to each person’s comfort and well-being. Another quality that stood out was the respect he had earned throughout the region. Wherever we stopped, he would engage naturally with tea house owners, local villagers, Sherpas, and other guides. It was clear that many people already knew him, and when they did not, his warmth and openness quickly created a connection. You could see how much people genuinely liked and respected him. Because of those relationships, we always felt welcomed wherever we went. We were not simply passing through as tourists; we felt connected to the communities we encountered along the way. Perhaps the greatest gift Bishal gave us was a sense of trust. As this was my first visit to Nepal, everything was new to me. Yet I always felt completely safe. His knowledge of the trails, weather, terrain, and local conditions was extraordinary. He always explained what lay ahead, whether a section would be steep, easy, challenging, or long, allowing us to prepare both physically and mentally. Even when adjustments needed to be made behind the scenes, he handled them calmly and confidently. Knowing that he had everything under control allowed me to fully relax and enjoy the experience. What impressed me even more was that his support did not end when the trek finished. After returning to Kathmandu, I still had some time before my flight home and wanted to do some shopping. Having never been to Nepal before, I had little idea where to go, what prices were reasonable, or how to judge quality. Despite having just spent nearly two weeks away from home leading our trek, Bishal generously took time out of his own schedule to help me. He met me in Kathmandu, took me around the city on his motorbike, showed me the best places to shop, advised me on quality and pricing, and helped negotiate. This was completely beyond what anyone would expect from a guide, and I appreciated it enormously. I would also like to mention the excellent quality of the mountain duffel bags provided by the company. We were given the option to keep them afterwards, which I gladly did. Mine has become a wonderful reminder of an unforgettable journey. Looking back, what I remember most is not only the spectacular landscapes but also the people who made the experience so special. Bishal’s professionalism, judgment, generosity, positivity, and genuine care for those around him set him apart. If I return to Nepal, I would choose Bishal as my guide again without a moment’s hesitation.

  • Enjoyable guided trip with Pramod in Manaslu circuit trek

Mr. Pramod is frequently recognized for his "good vibes" and constant positivity, which is a significant asset during the more grueling sections of the Manaslu Circuit. Professionalism & Vibe: We trekkers describe him as always exceptionally professional. He is known for taking care of all logistics—For example, from selecting the best teahouses to ensuring meals are prepared to our satisfaction—allowing us to focus entirely on the trek. Safety & Care: He is noted for his attentiveness to his clients' well-being, particularly regarding health and safety in high-altitude environments like the Larkya La Pass. Expertise: Having a guide who knows the local culture is vital; the upper regions of Manaslu are rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture, and a guide like Pramod helps bridge the gap with local communities effortlessly, enriching our journey with deep cultural insights

If you are looking for an incredible adventure, the Manaslu Circuit with Magical Nepal is an absolute must-do! This trek is full of unpredictable moments, which is exactly what makes the whole experience so fun and truly worth living. What made our journey genuinely special was our amazing guide, Paramod. Paramod’s knowledge of the region's culture and religion is exceptional. Whether explaining the nuances of Buddhism and Hinduism or sharing fascinating local insights, he kept us captivated. He taught us all about Yarsagumba (the Himalayan caterpillar fungus), which was really interesting. He even carried extra fruit with him just so we could enjoy it after dinner. It’s these small, thoughtful gestures that show how much he truly cares about his guests. His English is excellent, making conversations effortless and engaging throughout the entire trek. Thanks a lot to Magical Nepal, Paramod and Steven for making this trip unforgettable.

This was literally the best experience in my life so far. There are no words to describe the outstanding beauty of Manaslu Circuit. Especially Pemba and Kailas made our time here so special. They are incredibly professional, super friendly and kind, caring - and not to forget super funny. Having the opportunity to do the trek with them made the whole experience even more beautiful and wholesome. They were always in a good mood and as excited as we were, which made every day even more memorable. We already can’t wait to go on the next adventure with them! Also the organisation was perfect as well, everything was communicated clearly and we always had really nice rooms in the teahouses. Thank you so much and see you next time! Namaste.

We recently completed the Manaslu Circuit Trek with Magical Nepal and couldn't recommend them highly enough. From our very first enquiry, communication was excellent. The team made the entire process easy to organise, answered questions promptly, and provided clear information throughout. We particularly appreciated receiving our detailed itinerary the day before departure, which helped us feel prepared and excited for the adventure ahead. The logistics were seamless from start to finish. Airport pick-up and drop-off were well organised, the office was easy to access, and whenever anything arose during the trek, the team acted quickly and efficiently to ensure everything ran smoothly. A special mention must go to our guide, Dawa, who was truly outstanding. He was with us every step of the way and consistently went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. Dawa was kind, thoughtful, knowledgeable, and highly professional. His extensive understanding of Tibetan culture, the Himalayas, and the local communities added so much depth to the trek and made the experience far more meaningful. Most importantly, Dawa always prioritised our safety and wellbeing. He regularly checked in on us, offered encouragement during the more challenging sections, and ensured we felt supported throughout the journey. His positive attitude, patience, and genuine care for his clients made a lasting impression on us. The Manaslu Circuit is an incredible trek, and Magical Nepal played a huge role in making it such a positive experience. We are extremely grateful to the entire team and especially to Dawa for helping create memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you, Magical Nepal—we would happily trek with you again.

I booked the Manaslu Circuit Trek with Magical Nepal and it was somehow the best crazy decision I’ve made. Magical Nepal were very helpful and responsive through their WhatsApp channel and had the most information about the trip through their YouTube videos. The trek was extremely well organized. Our whole group of 6 met prior to the trek at the Magical Nepal office, and was briefed on the entire trek. The team: Sajan Tamang, the main guide, Subash Tamang, the assistant guide, and the amazing team of porters, Anil, Rajan and Sagar, made the trip super fun! Sajan’s and Subash’s energy, humor and care made me feel extremely safe. When I got sick, they made sure I was well taken care of. [Protip: ask Sajan about the pancakes at Dharmasala ;) and give your camera to Subash :)] There’s a lot of food options along the trek, apart from dhal bhat (dhal bhat power 24/7 💪🏻). There are cold/hot showers available at majority of tea houses, but I would stick to wet wipes as you could catch a fever [speaking from experience:/] I would highly recommend and appreciate hikers to carry their trash with them to prevent this beautiful place from getting polluted. I would never second guess booking another trek with Magical Nepal and with Sajan being the guide. I’ve met the most incredible trekking buddies and had an amazing experience. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this most special experience :))

I had an amazing time trekking the Manaslu Circuit with Magical Nepal. From the very start it was a positive experience - I chose to book with Magic Nepal because, as a solo traveller, it was reassuring being able to see who else would be in my trek group. Also, with the uncertainty of world events affecting flights at the time, I appreciated the flexible cancellation policy. I ended up in a group of fantastic people (a mix of other solo travellers and a pre-existing group), and within a couple of days it felt like we'd known each other for years! Our guide Sajan and assistant guide Subash were incredibly kind, informative, fun and friendly. They were always checking that we were feeling ok and coping with the altitude and I felt like we were in very safe hands. They were also considerate of the varying paces within the group, and made sure that all of the group members different walking speeds were accommodated. Our porters Sagar, Anil and Rajan were always friendly and provided extra moral support on the difficult days! The Manaslu Circuit was stunning with a variety of landscapes, terrain and cultures. The itinerary allowed plenty of time for proper acclimatisation, with room for flexibility. The highlight was the spectacular Larke Pass - a tough but very rewarding day. Anyone with a decent level of fitness should be able to complete the Manaslu Circuit, as long as you're up for the occassional challenging day. Accommodations can be basic (be prepared for days without wifi, electricity or a hot shower), but there will always be a warm drink and good company at the end of the day! Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to book with Megical Nepal again - the entire experience was smooth, well-organised and beautiful from start to finish. Thank you!

I became interested in booking a manaslu circuit trip in Nepal and reached out to 3 companies. Magic Nepal had the best information on their website and were the most responsive and communicative, hence I decided to book my trip with them. Already before the start of the trip I was able to see who else was booking on my trip which removed uncertainty (I was really worried ob being alone). Upon arrival they provide a airport picking. And when we had the briefing the company provided little goodies and maps, as well as all the information necessary. Their office is also spotless and in a convenient location. The whole team that supported us on this journey did an amazing job. Thanks to head guide Sajan Tamang, and his right hand Subhash Tamang, who informed, motivated and entertained us. They had endless patience with our ever more eccentric breakfast orders. They adjusted incredibly well to the discrepancy of paces amongst our group of 6 people; making sure I always knew where I was going and was equipped with a walkie talkie when another member and I was going ahead of the group. Sajan also dealt well with all unforseeable situations like weather and sickness. The porters, although their English wasn’t the best, were all the really friendly and did a great job lugging the 25-30kg along the trail (pack lightly for their sake 😉). Shoutout to Rajan, Sagar and Anil Tamang at this point. The trek itself was surprisingly easy, for someone who does cardio and hikes regularly. My highlight were manaslu base camp 4800m and the cozy evening next to the fireplace playing cards and drinking ginger lemon honey tee. If you are used to packing light, washing your clothes and through hikes in general then don’t get a porter. If you enjoy the luxury of the extra few sets of clothes or cosmetic items- go for it. Along the trail you CAN buy all essentials, be be aware that the prices explode exponentially as soon as you leave road access areas. Bring enough cash if you enjoy the occasional sweet treat and coffee/tee, and just pack enough bars and snacks to last you. Out of the 11 days, we only didn’t have power for charging nor WiFi/Data on 2 days, so don’t bring a massive powerbank. Also the sleeping bag they supplied I had to use only once, as there were blankets present in all accommodations. Overall I had a fantastic time and i wouldn’t hesitate to book with magic Nepal; and specifically Sajan again in future. Also thanks to my 5 trekking buddies, all whom were strangers that became friends through this shared experience.
