They say Kanazawa is the craft center of Japan, and we were hoping to experience some traditional crafts while we were there. We ended up choosing to make mini tsubas with Masami, and it was a fun and unique experience! Not only do you get to try some metalwork, but you also get a history lesson in tsubas and how samurai used and decorated them. Actually carving designs within the metal was quite difficult, but it really made you appreciate Masami’s talent - watching him work and seeing his designs was amazing. But we still love the designs we ended up with, and it’s nice to have a handcrafted souvenir that’s so durable - mine lives on my keys and so I’m reminded of Japan every time I walk out my door. Highly recommend!

Very fun time, the teacher was helpful and patient. Even the translator was knowledgeable of how to make the engravings. Great experience for older kids and adults

I joined a metal carving experience in Kanazawa, and it was a truly special and memorable time. Being taught directly by a skilled artisan made the experience feel very personal and authentic. At first, the process looked quite difficult, but the instructor explained everything carefully and step by step. As I gradually became more comfortable with the tools and techniques, I found myself completely absorbed in the work—and before I knew it, the time had flown by. Trying the craft myself gave me a much deeper appreciation for the incredible skill and precision of professional artisans. When choosing a design, I was also introduced to various engimono (traditional auspicious motifs), which added another layer of meaning to the experience and made me want to learn more about Japanese patterns and symbolism. This is not just a hands-on activity, but a chance to truly understand the craftsmanship behind Japanese metalwork. Highly recommended for anyone interested in culture, design, or traditional crafts.
