I recommend doing the Extended Backcountry Tour with Monument Valley Tribal Tours. This tour includes the 17 mile scenic drive, plus another 11 miles of even more beautiful arches and formations, The tour company was very accommodating when we had to change our date, and the pickup location at the visitor’s center is easy to find. Our tour guide was Larry, and he was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable of the history of the rock formations and the people who lived in and around them,

Had a great tour, Larry was an incredible guide. At one point he played a handmade flute to share native music with us. Gained a better appreciation for the history of the place as well as the Navajo culture and history. Very worth the time and money for this tour!

The scenery in Monument Valley is spectacular, and the backcountry access provided by this tour allows visitors to see locations that cannot be reached on the public drive. Those portions of the tour were worthwhile and provided excellent photo opportunities. Our guide was pleasant and reasonably knowledgeable. While I have certainly had more engaging guides on other tours, I have no major complaints about the guide himself. The primary reason for my rating is the weaving demonstration stop. Based on the description, I expected a demonstration of traditional Navajo weaving techniques and a discussion of the history and cultural significance of the craft. Instead, we spent much of the time sitting in a small hogan listening to complaints about modern Navajo youth and how things have changed over the years. I did not find this particularly informative, and it was not what I expected from a cultural demonstration. Monument Valley itself is extraordinary, and I do not regret taking a backcountry tour. However, I felt that this portion of the experience added little value and consumed time that could have been better spent exploring the valley or learning more about Navajo history and culture. Overall, the scenery was excellent, the guide was adequate, but the weaving demonstration significantly detracted from the experience. If I were visiting Monument Valley again, I would likely choose a different tour company.

The roads are rough but that is part of the adventure. Be prepared for some heat, sun, and depending on the day, a little dust.

This tour was outstanding! We got to see so much more than the loop drive has to offer. Our tour guide, Travis, was wonderful in explaining a lot of the history and the Navajo Culture. We made frequent stops for photos and our guide answered any and all questions. The “cherry on top “ was that our guide entertained us with music he played on guitar, flute and drums. It was a wonderful and memorable experience. Highly recommend it!!
