Spearfish Canyon
This narrated tour begins when we pick you up at your Rapid City hotel at approximately 8:30 AM. We drive to Sturgis, the town made famous by the Motorcycle Rally which is held the first week of August. We will tell you about the history of the town, the motorcycle rally and Ft. Meade, a peace-keeping fort built in 1878 that is still used by the Veterans’ Administration and the South Dakota National Guard. Then we continue up to the town of Spearfish where we enter the scenic Spearfish Canyon with its limestone cliffs, waterfalls, evergreen, birch and aspen trees. We will stop for pictures and viewing.
Lead
From Spearfish Canyon we drive into the town of Lead to tell you about the history and view the historic buildings and landmarks there. There is a 30 minute stop at the Homestake Mine Visitor Center to see the open cut mine. This was the largest gold mine in the western hemisphere for 125 years before it closed. It was given to the State of South Dakota and is now being used as an underground National Science Lab. The mine is 8,000 ft deep.

What a beautiful trip to see the northern black Hills of SD. Scott our guide was our guide on three tours we took with Affordable Adventures. Scott was very knowledgeable of each of these areas and provided the history and importance to each area of this tour. Scott is a great/safe driver and the Chrysler Town and country is immaculately kept, the air condition and ease of getting in and out was superb. Scott made sure there were plenty of snacks and water for each the tours we took with a Affordable Adventures. We visited and drove through the Spearish Canyon and stopped to see the beautiful bridal veil falls and the stream with the local trout visible. We drove through the beautiful town of Lead on our way to Deadwood. We saw saloon no. 10 both old and new. Where Wild Bill Hickcock was shot in a local card game. I participated in the reenactment of the shooting. We also took a bus tour to the grave of Wil Bil and Calamity Jane’s grave at the beautiful Mount Moriah cemetery. We had a wonderful lunch at the Midnight Star bar there. This town is beautiful and alive with a lot to do and see. I’d like to thank Anne(Owner of Affordable Adventures) and her Staff specifically Stephanie. They both were instrumental in helping us plan this trip. This is a very reasonable price for the quality of this tour. I highly recommended taking this if you would like to experience some of the beautiful towns within the Black Hills of South Dakota absolutely a fabulous tour!

This was a very pleasant day. Anne, our tour guide was wonderful. She was so knowledgeable and full of history information. The van had snacks and water which was appreciated. Lunch in Deadwood was delicious at the #10 saloon.. the scenery was beautiful in spearfish canyon. The towns of Deadwood was just like we expected it would have looked like in the early days and had a lot of history. We enjoyed the tour of the cemetery on Mount Moriah with wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane buried there. A very enjoyable day and Anne made it especially great!

Scott lead us on a great adventure through Fort Mead where we learnt some more interesting American history, went through Sturgis and received great info on the Bike rally which for two Harley enthusiasts was awesome, then into some beautiful scenery through Spearfish Canyon finishing in Deadwood for some more history with Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. A totally wonderful experience with a local who was fun and informative and made it a personal experience, along with his assistant Jerry! Recommend these guys!

Absolutely the best!! Since Ms Ann has so much family history herself in the area, we felt like we had the “inside track” on each and every location. She was extremely accommodating and made sure that we got to do EVERYTHING we wanted to do plus several other things she suggested!! We totally recommend this tour!!

The tour was great. I like to learn about the places I visit, and I was incredibly pleased with Ann’s knowledge. I was on the tour with a couple from California, and we did the Badlands and Wall Drug together the day before. It was really nice to be able to have a small group and to be able to ask questions. I highly recommend this tour company. Ann also gave me recommendations for activities that she knew I would enjoy.

As a native of Lead in the Black Hills, Ann Thompson, our guide and owner of Black Hills Affordable Tours, shared personal history and anecdotes with us. Before returning to Rapid City, Ann embellished the day with a ticketed tour of a restored mansion built by Deadwood’s most successful tycoon during the Gold Rush. We had ample time in Deadwood for lunch in a casino, browsing the shops & tasting the wines of South Dakota.

It is both site seeing and a history of the area. Hiking can be short or longer. It was customized to meet our needs. We stopped often to take pictures and flexibility in what we did in the town of Lead. Our guide Nick was extremely knowledgeable and dedicated to making sure we had a good experience
