Our tours operate rain or shine, as tropical rain showers in Thailand usually don’t last long. If it rains heavily, we try to seek shelter and will continue as soon as the weather improves. During the rainy season, it’s a good idea to bring a raincoat or poncho. Please note cancellations due to weather are not eligible for a refund.
While changes to the itinerary are very rare, WanderSiam reserves the right to modify the published schedule whenever, in our judgment, circumstances require it or if we consider it necessary for the comfort, convenience, or safety of our guests.
Lamphun
Lamphun is one of the oldest cities in Northern Thailand and was once the capital of the ancient Mon Kingdom of Haripunchai, which dates back to the 8th century. The city has a rich cultural and religious heritage and is considered an important center of early Buddhist history in the region. Today, Lamphun is known for its relaxed atmosphere, historic temples and authentic local character. Unlike nearby Chiang Mai, the city receives relatively few international tourists, which gives it a more traditional and laid-back feel. At 8:30 AM, you will be picked up from your hotel in Chiang Mai and transferred to the railway station. Here you will board the train for a short journey from Chiang Mai to Lamphun (3rd class; non air-conditioned). Although the train ride takes only around 30 minutes, it offers an enjoyable glimpse into everyday Thai life. Upon arrival in Lamphun, your minivan and driver will already be waiting to continue the tour.
Wat Phra That Hariphunchai
The first stop is Wat Phra That Haripunchai, the most important religious sanctuary in Lamphun. Originally built in the 11th century during the Mon Kingdom of Haripunchai, long before Chiang Mai was founded, the temple is one of the oldest and most revered in Northern Thailand. Its impressive golden chedi, believed to house sacred Buddha relics, has become the symbol of Lamphun and continues to attract many local pilgrims each day. The temple beautifully blends Mon, Lanna and Burmese architectural influences and has a peaceful, spiritual atmosphere. Within the temple grounds you will also find beautifully decorated prayer halls, ancient Buddha images and traditional lanterns hanging above the courtyards, adding to the temple’s unique charm and timeless character.
