I booked the History Tour on a quiet day and I was the only passenger. The roads had little traffic (most of the time) so we were able to fit in a bit extra. My tour guide, Gert, was a retired history teacher from the Netherlands who is now living on Sint Maarten. Our first stop was a viewpoint near Philipsburg. Gert pointed out the Carnival Village and the Government of Sint Maarten Building. Sint Maarten is celebrating its 55th Carnival from April 10 through May 5. Nearby are the remains of the salt ponds, now a landfill. In 1862, the Foga Salt Factory was built to process the salt. It is now in ruins. Another viewpoint overlooks Simpson Bay, near the airport runway. While looking at the Doodle Doo Cacti at the viewpoint, a bananaquit stopped by. We crossed into the French side and stopped at the French capital, Marigot. There, I climbed the 89 steps to Fort Louis. The fort is in ruins, but you can get a lovely view of Marigot from the fort. The main museum on the French side is Amuseum Naturalis at the Old House. As its name suggests, it focuses on the nature of the island. The Old House is in ruins and the museum exhibits are spread around the outside of the house. There is no one at the gate and you can enter freely during daylight hours. We visited the Emilio Wilson Estate on the Dutch side in the morning, but their museum was closed. The guard told us it will open at 11:00 a.m. So after visiting the French side, my guide took me back here to see their museum. The museum tells the story of the Estate. In the past, they grew crops. But when slavery was abolished, there wasn't enough labor to grow these crops. Since the mid-20th century, the only industry on the island is tourism. Emilio Wilson, the grandson of slaves, purchased the estate and became the first Black plantation owner on the island. My four hour tour lasted over five hours. My guide was excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed this look at the history of the island.

Charles was an amazing guide! He met us on time and we had a great time visiting all over the island. The climb to the fort was a little steep, but the view was worth every step! Well worth the cost and time!

Had Charles as a tour guide for this tour. He was very knowledgeable about the area and took us to several museums as well as a trip to Ft. Lewis. Nice air-conditioned van and a stop with lovely lemongrass iced tea and banana bread made by the owners of the company. Very informational and a great way to learn about the island in a few hours time.

I can’t recommend this small-group history tour with Nascha and Seagrape Tours highly enough! From the start, Nascha set the tone for a thoughtful and generous experience. Our first stop was a local grocery store, where she stocked her cooler with ice and surprised our group with refreshing beverages. As we were leaving, I noticed her quietly slip back inside to purchase a meal for someone in need—an act of kindness that spoke volumes about who she is. Nascha's deep love for the island shined through as she shared its rich history, culture, and her Dutch heritage. She took us beyond the typical tourist route to explore the complex relationship between the Dutch and French sides of the island, the salt-mining rush, sugar plantations, enslaved labor and the abolition of slavery, and the island’s eventual transition to tourism. Every stop was thoughtful, informative, and engaging. And as if that weren’t enough, she treated us to delicious homemade banana bread—an extra touch that made the day even more memorable. If you’re looking for a small-group tour with insight into the island’s history, heart, and humanity, look no further. Nascha and Seagrape Tours are simply the best!

Our tour guide was John, a Dutch national who has lived in St. Maarten for approx. 30 years, spending most of his time as a reporter for regional publications. Then in retirement, he started working part-time as a tour guide. His love for this tiny island was as effervescent as it was palpable and infectious. We spent a little over five hours with him - all by car, with frequent stops for walking to historical monuments, museums, shorelines, lookout points at high elevations and parks. He even brought lemongrass tea and the BEST Banana Bread ever for a mid-tour snack! His historical narrative started back around 400 - 500 AD, through the discovery of the Americas in the late 1400s, through the era of the slave trade, wars and political shifts of fortune between the Dutch, French and English, then finally into the current era of peace between the Dutch and French sides of the island, including the island's celebration of independence - all with its current ups and downs, economically. We asked lots of questions and conversed at great length with John in great and wonderful conversation. He is truly a gem amongst the island dwellers of St. Maarten! Whenever we travel, we always book a history tour and we have learned over the years that the tour is only as good as the guide. John was absolutely the best guide (and driver) that we've ever had the pleasure of spending time with! He certainly was one of many people that we met there who made our first St. Maarten experience so rich! One quick note about the roads in St. Maarten - there is one traffic signal on the entire island, very few road signs (at least on the Dutch side) and very few traffic signs so I am so glad that we opted to use taxi services for all our transportation needs! John made very easy work of negotiating the transit system of roads on the island and provided informative and fascinating commentary on a host of subjects pertaining to art, faith, culture, history and politics! It was an amazing tour, at incredible value and lots of fun!

Started off very interesting but seemed to wane as there is not a lot to see in St. Maarten. Only got a glass of water as beverage even though it was super hot. The banana cake as promised was very very good - one of the highlights of the tour. The Natural Museum is a waste and should be removed from the tour.
