Mongolian shamanism is an all-encompassing system of belief that includes medicine, religion, a cult of nature, and a cult of ancestor worship. In 13th century, the leading shaman declared Genghis Khan the representative of Mongke Koko Tengri (the "Eternal Blue Sky"), the supreme god of the Mongols. With this declaration of divine status, it was accepted that his destiny was to rule the world. Religious tolerance was practiced in the Mongol Empire; however, to defy the Great Khan was equivalent of defying the will of God. Central to the system were the activities of male and female intercessors between the human world and the spirit world, Shamans (böö) and Shamanesses (udgan). Yet, they were not the only ones who could communicate with the spirit world. Nobles and clan leaders also performed spiritual functions and so did commoners. The hierarchy of Mongolian clan-based society was reflected in the manner of worship.

We'll visit the shaman's shrine outer part of the city. It's only 20-25 minute driving place, it's still in city though.

Entertaining but not real. You will get a read based off of your conversation with the guide ahead of time and other info they can glean from looking at you. They made guesses, most of which were completely wrong.

Although meeting the shaman was meaningful, the experience was poor. Te driver (Bachi) was more than 2 hours late and would not let me cancel despite the problem this created for me. Instead, he cut the tour short by two hours. No meal was provided, the vehicle was littered with empty alcohol bottles, and he stopped to run a personal errand on the way back. When I requested a reasonable partial refund, he was uncooperative. Viator offered only 10% off which was unhelpful given the circumstances. Would recommend the tour and the Shaman, but not with this provider or driver.

Just a tourist trap. Overpriced and wasn't worth the money. Wouldn't recommend. Tour said 5 hours with Lunch. Lucky if we got 1.5 hours and no food offered. They need to revise their website on what they offer. Very disappointed to be fair.

Amazing once in a life experiences. The shaman medium and my guide were super kind. The experience with the shaman himself is indescribable. He saw a lot about me, and gave me beautiful readings

Experiencing a session with a shaman was truly transformative, a journey I’ll carry with me always. My guide was incredibly kind, patient, and knowledgeable, sharing insights into the world of shamanism. For anyone curious about spirituality, this is a great opportunity to delve deeper. I would recommend this experience to anyone seeking spiritual growth and understanding or if you want to experience more of Mongolian culture.

I have never done anything like this before and went with an open-mind. The Shaman made contact with my heavenly father and told me specific things about him and my childhood. The Shaman was able to tell me things about my married life, my property, my pets and my health! I had an amazing experience! 🙂🇲🇳

I did this solo, and therefore it cost me $200. It was not worth that price. Experience included a meal, which was a bowl of rice with very poor quality meat. I had mentioned I was vegetarian in my comments during booking. No drink was provided. The ger (yurt) where this was conducted was very dirty. Pictures from the description may lead you to believe the event is conducted somewhere out in nature, but it’s not. The location was an extremely poor area of Ulaanbaatar and the ger was set up in the fenced in yard/compound where the shaman lived. I do not recommend this experience. If the provider could improve the cleanliness and the meal provided, especially given the cost, I would have been able to rate higher.

This was truly a beautiful way to experience first-hand the culture and a really great way to understand Mongolia. It was a fascinating experience that I would recommend once in a lifetime. Bachi- is very personable and truly cares about his guest. Would recommend for a birthday or honeymoon. Celebrated heritage & learned a lot about various shaman traditions.

This is a fantastic personal experience and a great insight into the role of spirituality in Mongolian peoples lives. Bachi was a great guide being able to explain everything about the afternoon - the history of shamanism, the current relevance and what to expect during the ritual. We spent time in a ger, ate a home made lunch and had the best time. Bachi also helped us experience horse mare's milk and vodka made from cow's milk. Will never forget this day - thanks Bachi.

A fascinating insight into Mongolian spirituality and shaman culture. The guide was extremely helpful in giving context on meeting the shaman, and expertly translated during our interactions. Well worth doing during a stay in Ulaan Bator.
