Bayon Temple

The Bayon or state temple of Jayavarman VII is one of the most enigmatic and power religious constructions in the world. It is a unique mass of “faces tower” which creates a stone- a mountain of ascending peaks. There were originally 49 towers of which 37are still standing today. Most are carved with four faces on each cardinal point. The central tower has many more.

Terrace of the Leper King

This massive terrace is named after the 15th-century sculpture that was discovered on top of it. It probably dates back to the reign of Jayavarman VII and has been restored in a manner, which allows visitors to explore the earliest to most recent additions by actually entering the internal layers of the structure. Ta Prohm Temple is the jungle temple.

Ta Prohm

Ta Prohm was built in the 12th century by Jayavarman VII as a royal monastery. It was dedicated to the king’s mother. This temple was chosen to be left in its natural state as an example of how most Angkor looked, upon its rediscovery in the 18th century. Shrouded in jungle, the temple of Ta Prohm is ethereal in aspect and conjures up a romantic aura with gigantic roots and branches intimately intertwined with the stoned and probing walls to form a natural roof above the man-made structures.

Angkor Wat

Afternoon The City of Angkor is one of the grandest monuments ever constructed. The entire complex covers approximately 164sq miles with over 200 temples. Among the 30 temples that are accessible today, the most famous is Angkor Wat, the largest religious building in the world, with a volume of stone equaling that of the Cheops pyramid in Egypt. Conceived by Suryavarman II early 12th century, Angkor Wat took an estimated 30 years to build. Unlike most other Khmer temples, it faces west; the most likely reason is that the temple was dedicated to Vishnu, who is sometimes associated with the West.

Unlike the major sites at Angkor, Banteay Srei was not a royal temple. It was built not by the kings, but by Brahmin Priests often described in teams as the “Jewel of Khmer Art” Banteay Srei is a temple of great beauty and compares with little else in Angkor. Its miniature scale almost always surprises visitors, and the near-total decoration of its surfaces are exceptional. For its protection, the most inner spaces of the temple are closed to the public

We participated in a three-day Temple tour with Hidden Angkor, guided by Veasna, who demonstrated exceptional knowledge. As a former monk, he possesses excellent English skills and an extensive understanding of Cambodia's history and each temple we visited. He is a certified guide, which is not the case for all tour guides. Our experience was well-managed, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time. I highly recommend this tour operator. A couple of suggestions: wear appropriate and comfortable footwear (definitely avoid flip-flops) and bring a small towel to keep in the ice box with the water, as it will be useful for cooling off.

Our family had an exceptional three days with our tour guide, Veasna. His command of English and extensive knowledge about the sites we explored, as well as the lives of rural Cambodians, were truly enlightening. Our discussions on Cambodia's history offered insights that surpassed anything we had encountered in textbooks. Veasna's deep understanding of the construction of the temples and the meticulous efforts required to maintain them, especially considering they are built on sand, was particularly captivating. Learning about the significant manual labor involved in creating the temple moats was equally fascinating. Additionally, his skill in guiding us to the unique features of the temples ensured that we experienced sights that we would have overlooked if we had ventured alone. He exemplifies professionalism, attending to even the smallest details that greatly enhance the experience, such as providing a power bank for phone charging, offering cold water, and assisting with entering and exiting the van and boats. His advice on local customs helped me navigate the cultural landscape without feeling awkward or uninformed. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour with him and his professional driver, who skillfully navigated a modern, air-conditioned vehicle that provided us with comfort during the entire trip. We are genuinely grateful for the chance to have met him.

Experiencing Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and the numerous other temples is truly thrilling. Having a tour guide like Mr. Lion, who is both knowledgeable and passionate, makes it even more special. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. The tour was a fantastic blend of exploring the temples and venturing into some lesser-known areas, all while receiving an incredible history lesson. Lion is truly invaluable. He also suggested a fantastic restaurant near the temple area, and the food I had during our lunch break was exceptional. This has been one of the best tours I've ever taken. I highly recommend visiting Siem Reap, and if you do, the Hidden Angkor Tour is fantastic. Make sure to check if Lion is available, as he is truly one of a kind.
