The golden monkey trekking tour in Volcanoes NP is one of the top adventures to do in Rwanda. The activity involves a relatively easy trek through the bamboo jungles in the lower zones of the Virunga Volcanoes to find and spend an hour with the striking Golden Monkeys. Afterwards head to misty Bwindi, which is home to more than half the population of the remaining 720 Mountain Gorillas. Bwindi offers a unique birding opportunity, cultural experiences, and the elusive primates.

Pick up from the Airport and we head for a guided tour to the fast-growing neighborhoods of Kigali that are changing the face of the city. We drive through the older commercial and residential areas with a major stop at Kigali genocide memorial site commemorating the 1994 Rwandan Genocide before driving to Uganda, In the process you will traverse the lush country side dotted with undulating hills that have qualified Rwanda as a land of a thousand hills Arriving in Bwindi in afternoon you will check into your lodge for rest, optional Batwa Cultural tour. Dinner and overnight at:

After an early morning breakfast, walk to the park headquarters for briefing on the do's and don’ts during gorilla tracking and thereafter you will proceed to the gorilla trail. Gorilla tracking normally lasts between 2 to 8 hours or even a day to encounter the gorillas. However, you will be allowed to stay in the presence of these awesome apes for at least an hour. It is advisable that you carry packed lunch, which will be provided, as one cannot determine how long it may take to encounter the mountain gorillas. Later transfer back to Musanze, Dinner and overnight will be at:

Wake up for early breakfast and transfer to the park head offices in Kinigi by 7.00am. Join up with the other Golden Monkeys trekkers, meet the ranger guide for a few minutes talk about the activity and the park, and by 8.00am you transfer to the trail head just outside the park. Enjoy great views of the mountain scenery as you start your trek into the park to find the golden monkeys. The golden monkeys live near the edge of the park in the bamboo forests where the ground is relatively flat and easy to trek. Find the monkeys and follow them as they feed, notice how they skillfully pick the young bamboo leaves from the tip of the bamboo tree. They may also move out of the park into the potato fields and how they love the potatoes! After an amazing one hour with the golden monkeys you will return to the trail head drive back to the lodge for lunch and thereafter be transferred to Kigali Airport to catch you’ departure flight back home.

4.00We had a spectacular Honeymoon trip with Frena Adventures seeing the gorillas chill in Bwindi Forest, seeing the wonderful culture of Rwanda and Uganda, and watching the Golden Monkeys jump around in Volcanoes National Park. It was a surreal experience hiking for 2 hours to interact and take photos of the stunning gorillas - just inches away from us. Our guide, Issa, was very helpful, knowledgeable, and kind during our entire 3-day drive. We enjoyed our delicious home-made meals, talking about life in Rwanda/Uganda, and driving around seeing the different cultures. You can tell Issa takes pride in what he does and loves his country and the animals. We would recommend Frena Adventures if you are looking for adventure in Rwanda and Uganda. My wife and I had a trip of a lifetime! Note for future travelers: Roads are VERY bumpy. If you tend to get car sick, bring anti-nausea medication. You do need to wear a surgical mask to see the gorillas and monkeys, so make sure you pack some. The Volcanoes National Park only takes Visa card the day of the hike. Although we did pay the tour upfront for our passes, we did have to pay again when we got there (thank goodness we had our Visa with us). But Issa reimbursed us right when we met back with him after the hike was over. There is a cultural experience in your itinerary – we would recommend bringing plenty of tip money if you do proceed with that part of the trip. Lastly, it would be helpful for Frena to ensure the guides know exact location of lodges/hotels to prevent them getting lost. We can’t wait to travel with Frena Tours in the future! Lodges we stayed in: Four Gorillas Lodge, Five Volcanos Boutique Hotel. We highly recommend these lodges booked by Frena Tours. They were wonderful

Our driver and guide, Ronnie, was absolutely fantastic — knowledgeable, friendly, and always punctual. He made sure we were comfortable and well-prepared for each part of the journey, and shared great insights about the local area and wildlife along the way. Thank you for an amazing trip!

5.00Working with Frena Adventures and going for the Gorilla/Golden Monkey trek was amazing. Fred handled all the logistics/ planning /payments seamlessly and was very prompt with all my queries before I left for Africa. Rodney (my driver for three days) was also outstanding. He was very knowledgeable and provided lot of useful information about the countries of Uganda/Rwanda, the people, the politics, the history and the wildlife as we drove around the two countries. He was always on time and very attentive. He also personally arranged my pick up and drop off with the Ranger for the Gorilla trek in Bwindi. I would highly recommend Frena Adventures. Fike

The organization, incl. online payment, was quick and reliable. The driver Ronald was always on time, drove safely and explained alour about local nature & culture. Would definitively recommend

5.00Yesterday we returned from our trip to Rwanda and Uganda via Frena Adventures and hosted by Ronald (what a guy!!!). We spent the first day with Golden Monkeys and the second day with the Mountain gorillas. It was without a doubt the best trip of our lives (and we try to go away as much as we can). Ronald was an absolute legend, he made us feel welcome, comfortable and safe. He knew when we needed to rest and when we wanted a good chat. He also had some big tunes playing in the car when we needed it!!. It wouldn’t have been the same trip without Ronald and Frena. Our plan is to go back again when we can to see the chimps
