Alledeghi Wildlife Reserve is known for its wide-open plains and rich grassland ecosystem, making it one of the best places in Ethiopia to see grazing animals. The reserve is particularly famous for the Beisa oryx, often seen in herds, as well as Soemmerring’s gazelles and other antelope species. I guess I did the express trip to the National Park and truly found it to be an amazing experience with just a few exceptions the travelers may want to be aware of. First and most important is that the staff take care of you and attend to your needs as much as possible. From the guide, driver and scouts (rangers) in Park, I felt they took care of my well being and interests as much as they could. Second, the scenary, cultural experience to see what life is like between the Awash NP and Addis is real eye opener to what’s going on in this part of the world, so bar none I got a greater view of living conditions and the spectrum of life there. Third, I know the tour company was short handed and couldn’t arrange more naturalist resources to interpret more about animal life and the ecosystem they live in. Thus, the best context I could get about the park was from a dusty and not well maintained museum they have at the park and due to language barriers, I only got animal identification and nothing more. However the scouts had quite the eagle eye and had me even standing on termite mounds to see herds of wild animals they spotted from a far. Fourth, a major disappointment was that my binoculars were confiscated at the airport and stored at customs for the duration due to security laws. The company has them on the list of things to bring, but makes no mention of needing a permit that they’ll process and probably pass the cost on to you. Anyway love given them feedback to make future travelers aware of this situation. Funny thing is that my zoom lens and Camera are fine so I at least got a bunch of great shots. Fifth, if you are a border like I am you need to advocate when to stop if you spot a bird you’d like to observe and also ask for some time to observe since the vehicle will scare them away at first. Lastly, all aside, I still had a magical time viewing new wildlife to me and experiencing some amazing scenery down there even at the Dojo Hot Springs Lodge where I saw a hippo. Which reminds me, it’s hot there so make sure you keep your fluids up!
