This unique Amazon experience enables you to experience the jungle in a unique way. Cuyabeno is one of the most biodiverse nature reserves on Earth. There, you can spot over 500 bird species, 100 mammals, and over 400,000 plant species. In addition, enjoy local food, canoe rides, paddling, and swimming for the more adventurous!
During those 4 days, you will learn more about the 5 indigenous ethnic groups living along the banks. Waita Lodge is the only community-based lodge of the reserve. Therefore, by booking with Ecuatraveling, you contribute to the economic growth of the area. On top of that, Waita is an ecolodge, so staying there ensures environmental conservation and cultural preservation. Those are extremely important since Cuyabeno Reserve is under threat from the oil industry and deforestation and it is critical to ensure its sustainability through travel!

Ready for your 4-day Amazon tour? Meet us at Meeting Point Restaurant (formerly Blue Planet) in Lago Agrio at 8:00 AM. A bus ride and scenic canoe trip will take you to Waita Lodge, where you’ll enjoy wildlife sightings and an immersive rainforest experience, including a night walk to spot insects, snakes, and more.

Our activity starts at 6:00 - the best time to spot birds. We take our rowing canoe through small lakes to enjoy the sunrise. We have the opportunity to observe many species of birds and mammals. We then return to our Lodge to enjoy a delicious breakfast. Later, we go on a walk of 3 hrs. Our local guide will share his knowledge about the use of medicinal plants that his ancestors have transmitted through generations and provide explanations about the fauna and flora of the area. Back at the Lodge, we have a delicious lunch. At 16:30, we take again our canoe to navigate around the lagoon of the Ceibo, «giant tree of the jungle». We can admire the forest flooded by black water, also called Igapo. Afterwards, we visit the San Francisco river, a narrow white water river surrounded by exuberant vegetation and unique species of birds. When it gets dark, we venture downstream in search of caimans and nocturnal animals (fishing bats, tree boas, nocturnal birds, etc.).

At 5:45, we take the canoe to enjoy the awakening of nature. We navigate with the motor canoe for about 1h30 downstream Cuyabeno River. On the way, we can observe birds starting their day. Once at the saladero (a clay bank full of nutrient-exposed river banks), we can witness 5 species of colorful parrots and parakeets feed on clay. After enjoying this wonderful morning, we return to our Lodge for breakfast. We take a rest and hop in our motorized canoe once again, direction to the bocana, where the two rivers meet. Here, we are able to admire the freshwater dolphins and the different colorations of the water. In the afternoon, we canoe-ride to the Bird Observation Tower. This tower is built around one of the largest trees in the area, a Ceibo tree. From the top of the tower, at 28 m (92 ft) high, we have a breathtaking view of the Canopy and the fauna. Before returning to our Lodge for dinner, we go for a short night walk around the tower in search of new species of insects.

That day being our last one in this wonderful place, we will go on a forest excursion or canoe ride to witness the awakening of this incredible nature one last time. After breakfast, you must prepare your luggage for the return trip. We will sail 30 minutes downstream on the Cuyabeno river and then take the Aguarico river upstream for 3 hours until we reach Tierras Orientales. We will have lunch while waiting for our transportation back to Lago Agrio. We will arrive at approximately 15:00 and you will be able to either take the bus or the plane back to Quito.

5.00Our experience at Waita Lodge was amazing. The transfers by shuttle and motorized canoe was seamless. Our guide Carlos took care to explain the uses of various plants, spotted frogs, toucans, macaws, kingfishers, 5 species of monkeys, capybaras, and of course, the pink dolphins. He was so kind as to take the pictures while we used the binoculars to view the wildlife. So much to see and appreciate there. The meals prepared for us were excellent. We felt very fortunate to have this experience in the Amazon. Thank you to the staff at Waita Lodge and Ecuatraveling.

5.00I had the most amazing 4 days at Waita Lodge and would loved to have stayed longer. The lodge was very comfortable, clean and relaxing and had everything we needed. Our food was always made with fresh ingredients and was really good. Our guide, Charlie, was so knowledgeable and I learned a huge amount about the wildlife, flora and fauna in the rainforest. His ability to recognise bird calls was incredible and I lost count of the number of species we encountered. He looked after us very well and his passion for the rainforest rubbed off on us all. I was lucky enough to see the pink river dolphins a few times, including when they swam up past the lodge so we could stand on the decking and watch them. I also saw sloths, various species of monkeys, macaws, capybaras (which were right outside the lodge grazing), caiman, snakes, toads, loads of unusual insects and spiders, and so many different birds. Overall the experience was unforgettable and I would encourage anyone who is interested in wildlife or plant life to book this trip. You won't regret it!

5.00Waita is a remote and isolated lodge that is ideal for birdwatching and animal viewing. We traveled there from Quito where it took one 45 minute flight, two taxi rides totaling 2 hours, a 3 hour shuttle, and a nearly 4 hour motorized canoe ride to reach the lodge, but for us the journey was nearly half the fun as our drivers expertly took care of us and shared their knowledge of the flora, fauna, and history of each area we passed through. When we arrived at Waita, they immediately welcomed us to rest and eat well with their masterful cooking and clean and cool lodgings. Everything we ate had so much care and flavor that I never wanted to leave lodge! But when we did, our expert Naturalist, Diego, made sure to carefully show and name each plant and animal that we came across, and he worked hard so that we had the absolute best tour of the jungle that we could possibly have. He kept us safe and taught us how to respect the jungle and the river, and he made sure that we got to see the rare and at ease animals and birds that lived along the Cuyabeno River. From monkeys, sloths, dolphins, otters, caimans, parrots, toucans, kingfishers, and more, we always saw something new and thriving every day. From the sounds of howler monkeys and birds every morning, to the clearest stars along the river at night, our time at Waita lodge was a truly magical and once in a life time experience and I would highly recommend their lodge and their tours to anyone wanting to experience the Amazon rainforest and the dignified tributaries that make up this world famous river!

5.00Highly recommend booking through Ecuatraveling. We had an amazing time in the Waita lodge. We learned a lot about the Amazon jungle and loved the boat rides and hikes, but also managed to relax in the hammocks. We also stayed in Quito and did a day trip to the Cotopaxi.

5.00Surprised about this incredible experience. The food was really healthy everyday and the people who hosted the trip were super friendly. The guides have so much knowledge about the flora and fauna and they spot each animal during all the activities. I enjoyed this trip so much, it was one of the most incredible trips of my life. I would definitely recommend this trip!!

5.00We did the 4 day Cuyabeno tour with Ecuatraveling, it was just amazing! The lodge is one of the most remote lodges you can go to, the peace, nature and wildlife were beyond our imaginations. Every day there are around three different tours with a guide (greets to Jefferson) either with a Canoe or by foot. Some we also did at night! We saw pink dolphins otters, colourful birds, monkeys, snakes, tarantulas and much more! We are vegetarian, the food was very very good and freshly cooked. There is no phone reception in the djungle so do tell your family and friends beforehand that you are detoxing ;) And bring mosquito repellent! The staff of Ecuatraveling are super nice, it was very easy to book and they were available for all questions. I would definitely recommend!!

5.00I had a fantastic time at Waita Lodge! It is a beautiful place with lots of nature and animals. The guides were super good and explained everything about the jungle and the animals. The days were full of fun activities. Bird watching, SUPing, swimming, and of course walks through the jungle! In your free time you could relax in the hammocks, read a book or swim. I was there for 4 days and 3 nights and I would have happily stayed longer. Highly recommended!
