Alay Mountains
Trekking distance/time: 20 km, 8 hr, Ascent: 1749 m, Descent: 868 m The second day is relatively strenuous and uphill. The trail becomes steep and ascends approximately 400 meters through grass meadows, and pastures to Koshmoinok Pass at 3,210 m (1 hour). After the steep sloops, the trail winds its way down through evergreen trees and continues to the edge of the valley until it reaches Kyzyl Shoro village (2 hr). Break for lunch in the village at a homestay. After lunch, almost flat walk until you get to the next village. At this point, the trail turns away to the south and from the trailhead begins the steep 9 km climb along the well-trodden path through fields filled with grazing cows and shepherd’s yurts inviting you for tea. With the increase in elevation, the terrain begins to change from mid-mountain green forest to high alpine rocky and dry landscapes. After 4-5 hours of intensive trekking, we reach our yurt camp. Dinner and overnight in a family-run yurt at 3,600 meters.

Walk along the stream all the way up to the foot of the pass (1,5 hours). Head up to the top of the pass on a barely seen trail in a zigzag formation on loose scree (1 Hr). The ascent to the pass is steep and covered in loose scree. As you arrive at the pass, the glaciated peaks and alpine lakes begin to appear. Enjoy your accomplishment at the top of the pass with its otherworldly and stunning views. While descending, some parts of trails are a bit challenging as the trail is narrow and the terrain is composed mainly of scree and small pebbles. We break for lunch at the riverbank with glacier views all around. After lunch, we head into a valley to follow the small stream all the way to a finish point of the trail (2-3 hours). The most stunning and unique landscapes I've ever seen. The scenery changed every single day, offering a new and breathtaking view at every turn. It was an incredible experience to stay in a traditional yurt and at Camp One, living the same way as those with their sights set on conquering Lenin Peak. A huge thank you to the staffs who took such great care of me. Their support and guidance were crucial in helping me safely and successfully reach the summit of Yukhin Peak at 5130 meters. It was an accomplishment I'll never forget!

Amazing experience. Trekking in a very remote zone of Kyrgyzstan among majestic mountains, with the cultural experience of local villages and yurtas. Very well organized, super available guides (our guide Ernis and our horsemen Nu Sultan really made all they could to make our experience the most valuable possible and we really appreciated it).

Our trek in Kyrgyzstan was an incredible experience—truly one of a kind! The landscapes were breathtaking, and what made the journey even more special was the authenticity of the experience. Staying with local families in yurts was a highlight: everyone was so welcoming, and we felt completely immersed in the culture. A huge thank you to our guide, Osman. He made sure everything ran smoothly and added so much value to the entire experience. If you're looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure with real cultural connection and amazing people—this is it. We keep recommending it to everyone we meet on different other treks as we know they will love it in Kyrgyzstan!

This was an amazing one off experience to be recommended for those who enjoy breath taking scenery and love horses. We had two amazing guides and the horses that we rode over the 5 days I had the greatest respect for as they negotiated with ease the sometimes challenging terrain

Would definitely recommend Visit Alay for adventure tours in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. I booked the Dushanbe-Osh Pamir tour and the 8-day Best of Alay tour in Kyrgyzstan. The tour through the Pamir pathway was a breathtaking journey through the mountains region of Tajikistan which I would definitely repeat - all stops were astonishing and the places we stayed at were a great way to see the traditional way of living of the local people of the Pamirs. Our driver Kokon was a great guy, had a great amount of fun with him, thank you so much Kokon! The 8 day hiking tour around the Alay mountains was another highlight of my solo trip in Central Asia - staying in yurts and hiking in the Kyrgyz mountains were unforgettable experiences. Our guide Mamyr and Il Balbek riding our horse were outstanding. We had great fun with Mamyr and could communicate very well with him in English, as his level is incredibly good. Loved to see involved Mamyr is in the local community of Sary Mogul and how well he and his colleagues keep the hiking paths in the mountains well maintained. A lot of effort and dedication that shows their love towards the mountains they were raised in. Thank you so much for everything!

It has been a wonderful trip in the Alay mountains organised by Visit Alay. The region is really beautiful. Do not forget the local people, who made this trip even more special. I do not write a lot of reviews, but this trip is so well organized, that I highly recommend it to everybody who is keen to experience a remote region of Kyrygystan. Just book the tour, you will not be disappointed!

Absolutely recommed doing this tour with Visit Alay, it was an incredible experience with beautiful and varying views throughout from green meadows to snow covered mountains. I've done a few multi day treks in South America and Nepal but this one was one of my favourites for how scenic it is every day of the trip and how kind the locals are. My tour was led by Mamyr, was a local guide from Sary Mogul, and he was an excellent and supportive guide who taught us a lot about the history and the way of life in the mountains along the way. It was quite an adventure staying at the yurt camps and homestays, the food was delicious and the local people were always very friendly and kind. I also really liked how the money generated from tourism seems to be reinvested into improving the infrastructure in the local communities.

We had a memorable and wonderful week thanks to the staff of Visit Alay and our guide Baiysh. We experienced several authentic moments (even if it could be more). The timming was good every day. The accommodations and the yurts were very well to introduce of the daily lifestyle of shepherds and local people.
