  Booking through TripAdvisor was easy and we really enjoyed the Alcatraz tour. Interesting history to contemplate and the audio tour was paced well. Make sure you make the walk through the prisoner recreation yard and down the stairs to the stunning gardens and view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

  Going to Alcaraz is a great experience it is amazing to see all that history. would book early as it gets very busy and the island has a very steep climb to get to ware the tour starts but it is a great half day

  The morning of the excursion my daughter ended up very sick, and we couldn’t go. I tried to reschedule or cancel for my money back, and was told ‘no’, outright. I explained the situation and the ‘customer service’ agent didn’t care, regardless of her 102 fever, ‘you either attend or not, your choice, we don’t change or refund’. I will NEVER book through Viator or TripAdvisor again.

  This was such a disappointment. Our family had purchased tickets through the official site for a sunset visit to Alcatraz. We arrived on time and waited in a long line for the ferry. However the company had overbooked and about 20 of us were not able to board. We were confused at first- why have us buy tickets for a specific time if you wouldn’t honor them? One denied group had made dinner reservations and had to make a choice between a later visit and dinner. We were told just to wait another 40 minutes for the next ferry to arrive. It was an unseasonably warm day in San Francisco, so the group of us made our way to a shady part of the queue to continue waiting. The staff member yelled to us to move up. We explained that we just needed to wait in the shade since we had already been standing in the sun for 20 minutes for the original ferry. She yelled at us again, stating that if we didn’t move up we’d forfeit our tickets. Just to be clear, this wasn’t because they needed us to move- there was plenty of room on the platform. Just felt petty, adding insult to injury. Most of us ended up getting refunds. One last thing: they do pack those ferries tightly. Standing room only. It’s a shame that company has such a monopoly on Alcatraz.

  Great experience, loved the area. Alcatraz is something you should do at least once. It’s an location full of history for those who find it interesting. Easy access to information and allowed for us to move at our own pace. Just know you need good comfortable shoes, maybe a hat, and earphones in case you don’t want to use the ones they provide on site. There were flies but not too bad. Ferry ride was a bit choppy but I imagine that’s the waters fault. Overall, I recommend.

  It took some time to board the boat we left 40 minutes past our due time,with no explanation by the staff there, after getting there a half hour before as the tour stated so we had to cut our time on Alcatraz to make it to a reservation. Otherwise ok

  Great experience with 4 teenage kids. They definitely pack the boats in and not a lot of seating so that was rough ( with trying to stay of your feet as the boat moved and rocked) but overall a great experience

  This excursion is a scam. Book directly with Alcatraz City Tours and save half. This tour is double in price with the only addition being an app that provides optional audio guide. It’s pretty disappointing that Viator allows this on their platform.

• Investing and informative but night trip not worth the extra money.

  Definitely interesting and worth the trip. So much interesting history we didn’t know and so interesting to see the island up close. Don’t bother paying extra to go at night. We thought this world be extra special but there weren’t extra events like they said-there were similar talks during the day. And the return trips are limited so you will end up rushing out in the island for longer than you expect and probably want. Also, they sell hot digs and such in the ferry but some people brought their own with them. Fun and interesting.

  

  

  

  

  

  

• We had fun. Getting on and off the boat is the longest part. This is easily a 3-4 hour commitment, be prepared.
