Step back in time to the rain-lashed streets of Angel Meadow – the Victorian Manchester slum so vile it was dubbed ‘Hell upon Earth’ by Friedrich Engels.
In the shadow of one of the world’s first cotton mills, 30,000 souls trapped by poverty are fighting for survival as the Industrial Revolution is built upon their backs.
Mancunian families are struggling to keep body and soul together in overcrowded lodging houses and deep cellars on the banks of the River Irk as gangs of scuttlers stalk the pavements outside.
In this new tour by me, historian and writer Dean Kirby, the author of the bestselling book Angel Meadow: Victorian Britain's Most Savage Slum, you will hear the hidden story of how the district and its people shaped one of the world's greatest cities.
Whether, like me, you are a descendant of Angel Meadow ancestors or have a burning passion to explore the history of Manchester, this tour is for you.

My wife and I made this tour our very first activity after landing in Manchester from the US. It was the perfect way to get to know this great city. Dean is an amazing storyteller who's passion for Angel Meadow and its people really brings this historically important neighborhood to life. We were fortunate enough to have folks in our group who, like Dean, had with family connections to Angel Meadow, and Dean added some details to the tour that were truly affecting. Whether you're from Manchester or just visiting, this tour is a must to understand the city's vital place in the making of the modern world.

I would highly recommend this tour of Angel Meadows with Dean. Having lived in Greater Manchester for over 60 years, I've never explored this area which is teeming with history, all brought to life by a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic Dean. It is clear he is very passionate about this history which is personal to him. It's also interesting that visitors world-wide attend the tour, two Danish women attending ours. 90 minutes of being immersed in another time, listening to entertaining stories of nefarious local characters was well spent! Thank you Dean for keeping these stories alive and relevant.

Went on a superlative tour with Dean last week. A mine of information with intersesting, amusing and even hilarious anecdotes relating to some of the people who lived in the area in the nineteenth century. A true expert. For those interested in more detail I can fully recommend his fascinating book on Angel Meadow. (forgot to take my copy with me for him to sign!). For a picture of the area of beyond this area of Manchester I recommend you read Friederich Engels "Condition of the Working Class..."Manche Fully recommend.

A very informative and enjoyable walk around the Angel Meadow area of Machester. Dean is very informative and explains the history of this fascinating area, allowing time to answer any questions he is asked. There are plenty of stops throughout the tour where Dean tells the stories of some of the people who lived here, the jobs they worked at, and the terrible living conditions of which they had to contend with. A very nice touch was that Dean mentioned my great-grandmother and her father by name, and he located the exact area of their home. I can highly recommend this tour.

Dean is a wonderful story teller! He guided us to parts of the city that I have only ever trundled past on the tram or driven through without interest, bringing those buildings and pavements back to life. He selects some wonderfully, vivid characters and both entertained and enlightened the group with anecdotes both gruesome and heart warming. It was especially moving when he has able to take some of our group to the exact spot where their ancestors had lived and even had photo of their house. For locals and visitors this is a ‘must do’ on your next trip to Manchester. I’m going to buy Dean’s book for my mum as she is too old for the walk.

Dean's tour of Angel Meadows was really good with loads of interesting stories about the people who lived there. He was a great guide and had lots of knowledge and I was impressed that he helped a couple of people on the same tour who had ancestry to show them where their ancestors lived! It was great to hear about what life was really like, something I think we don't always appreciate when we're looking back. I'd highly recommend this - thanks Dean!

My sister, husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour round Angel Meadows. Dean our guide was so knowledgeable and passionate about the subject and because of this he was able to keep his audience fully engaged with stories and characters from the past. He also brought history alive with pictures and drawings relating to the characters of the area. For anyone interested in learning more about historical Manchester I highly recommend this tour. Thanks, Dean, for a super afternoon.
