Berchtesgaden holds so much historical value with regards to World War II. During the Third Reich the Obersalzberg was the Southern Headquarters for the National Socialist Party with many top leaders owning homes here, and many important political decisions made here. This private tour is perfect for those wishing to discover this history...
This half day tour covers many of the historically important sites on the Obersalzberg, including the more hidden locations that most tourists never hear about such as the site of the Berghof; Hitler's former home. While there are many tour options that include this area, most will only stop off at the most well known spots. This tour also includes the secrets hidden on the mountain which really provide an authentic account of the fascinating history of this area.
In addition, the mountain scenery is extremely beautiful and on a clear day you will be surrounded by stunning panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps and the valley below.

We were a group of 4 couples who did the Discover Eagle's Nest Tour with Tom Lewis. Tom was great! The weather didn't cooperate and the Eagle's Nest was closed due to snow but we switched the tour to a half day so that we could still visit the Berghof, bunkers and other WWII sites. Tom gave us the option to cancel, but we're so glad we didn't! His knowledge and passion for the topic was amazing. We learned so much that in the end we didn't mind that we weren't able to visit the Eagle's Nest. Tom was incredibly professional, very responsive in advance of the tour and was enjoyable to spend time with. I would highly recommend Tom!

We had met Tom years ago while he was giving a tour to other people and we’ve kept in touch until our daughter was old enough to understand. That day has come and we finally enjoyed a private tour with him. His knowledge of history and this part of the world in particular is astonishing. He puts everything into context and is entertaining. My 10 year old came out of it totally enthralled and so did we. Once she’s older we’d love to come back to do a longer tour and hear more stories about the area and WWII. Highly recommended!

Yesterday I went on the Discover Eagles Nest private half day tour around Obersalzberg with Tom. We were visiting Berchtesgaden as a couple, but I booked this tour for just myself as my partner is not really interested in history. I was unsure at first because it’s a tour for up to 6 people and my first thought was that I can’t justify the cost of the whole trip just for me, but oh my god was it worth it!! Tom is a friendly and likeable guy from the get go, and his knowledge of the third reich history from this area is unrivalled. Over email I mentioned I didn’t want to do the eagles nest as we were already doing this the day before, and Tom catered for that no issues at all. He took me around the main sites like the Berghof, but also some more obscure sites also and it felt like I was on a proper adventure. I could do as much or as little as I wanted, Tom was really easy going. The vehicle I was picked up in was modern and extremely clean, and Tom even provided an umbrella when it rained. He gave me some really great info, showed me relevant photos on a tablet as we went round and answered any questions I had so well. Towards the end it felt like I was on an excursion with a mate, it was really relaxed and throughly enjoyable. For anyone interested in third reich history who is in/near the area, I can’t recommend this tour enough! What you see and learn is priceless. Also if you’re a solo traveller, I absolutely encourage you to book this tour, it’s the best decision I’ve made in a long time! In fact, solo was arguably better than a small group. Thank you Tom for a superb tour!

If you want a more in depth and personal tour of The Eagles Nest, we highly recommend 'Discover Eagles Nest'. We were met by Amy who, along with her husband Tom, own and run this tour company. As Amy has lived in the area for twelve years, she has a wealth of knowledge and this gave us a greater understanding of both the Eagles Nest and surrounding areas. We were met at the top of the steps to the bus depot, given a talk about the area and then we took a bus to just below the Eagles Nest, where again Amy gave a brief introduction to the building etc. We were very fortunate with the weather and the views are outstanding, looking across to Austria and the Bavarian Alps (still with snow), and a view right down to Berchestgaden and to where our hotel was at Buchenhohe. We took the brass lift twice (our choice as you can ride it as many times as you wish) and walked the path, up and down, that Easy Company took when they ensured it was safe to enter back at the end of the war. At the end of the tour, Amy gave us our return tickets for the bus. You are given an alloted return time, but you can scan your tickets to reset a return time of your choice (this system also allows you to change the return time as often as you like, if you still require more time to look around). You really have to come and experience this lovely tour for yourself. Amy was more than happy to answer any questions and has a real passion for the history of the area. Parking is €5 up until 10pm. You can use the English translation button on the pay and display machine to assist you and it takes card, or coins (you can also use the app Parkster). Once you have finished and you return to the car park, the Documentation Centre is two minutes walk from the away, and is also recommended. After we had finished in this area, we drove a 4 minute drive to the area of the Berghoff (Hitlers home - destroyed in 1952). Also Tom, Amy's husband, has information on YouTube regarding the information about the Berghoff for further interest. Thank you Amy, we really enjoyed our tour. Just book 'Discover Eagles Nest' you won't be disappointed!

This was an amazing tour! Tom was extremely knowledgable on the locations and the history of the sites and the region. He pointed out things which aren't on the official maps of the area, and was able to add deep context and details which made it incredibly informative! I learned so much new information I was taking notes as we went so I wouldn't forget! Tom even recommended additional resources I could get which for more investigation and learning on my own afterwards. His insights and abilities to connect the history with where he brought you to make this tour a Must Do for any size group!

Tom was very knowledgable and it was obvious he has lived in the area for quite some time and gotten to know the area and history thoroughly. He was kind enough to pick us up at the bus station before our tour and drop us off at a location for lunch at the end of the tour. Definitely a 5 star experience that I would recommend to anyone.

We were picked up at the hotel by Tom who caught our attention from the first minutte. Livingly explaining and knowledge sharing from a obvious very large knowledge base. We got information and stories that we would not have been able to pickup without his inputs. A private tour, value for money, we can highly recommend. Go for it!
