1

Anuradhapura Stupas Scenic Point

Anuradhapura is an ancient sacred city that was established around a cutting from Buddha’s fig tree. Dating back to the third century BC, Anuradhapura was established by the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns. This magnificent city of palaces, temples and monuments flourished for 1,300 years but was abandoned after it was invaded in the late 10th century. Much like Peru’s Machu Picchu, locals were aware of it but not many others until it was “discovered” by Europeans many centuries later. These fantastic ruins have since been excavated and are accessible for the public to enjoy.

Polonnaruwa. The terms “beauty” and “beast” usually go together well, except at Polonnaruwa where beauty goes better with “ruins.” The second oldest kingdom in Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa is known for the ruins of this ancient garden city. The 12th century ruins are some of the best preserved in the country. Polonnaruwa was a place where traders of exotic goods mingled with worshippers in the many temples. Start your tour of Polonnaruwa at the Archaeological Museum, then proceed to the massive (50 buildings) Royal Palace with its well-preserved audience hall. The stunningly decorated Sacred Quadrangle is another must-see here.

Dambulla

The Dambulla Cave Temple is a sacred Buddhist site. There is no entry fee to get into the temple on full-moon days; however, these days are especially busy because of the religious significance of this lunar phase. Devotees from all over the world make pilgrimage to this place. There are over 80 caves documented in the area, but the most famous five are outfitted with impressive statues and paintings. Some of the caves date back to 1000 BC, when prehistoric Sri Lankans would have lived within them, so it is unsurprising that they would have created temples inside at that time. If you do plan to visit, please be aware that visitors must cover their shoulders and legs and remove shoes before entering the temple.

Kandy Lake Club - Cultural Dance Show

Kandyan Cultural Show: Held in Kandy town, this cultural show depicts various forms of Kandyan dancing which was once native to the area but has now spread to different regions of the island. Originated from a dance performed by Indian shamans who came to the island, Kandyan dancing plays an important role in Sri Lankan culture and is a much-anticipated event during perahera processions. During the show, you will see several dances which depict the graceful movements of birds and animals, which trace their origins back to the ancient ritual known as the Kohomba Kapkariya, as well as energetic acrobatic performances where the men perform a series of leaping pirouettes and stunts such as plate-spinning and the dramatic ‘fire walk’ which ends the show.

It immediately became an object of great importance and has been celebrated and paraded throughout history. However, many attempts have also been made to steal or destroy the tooth. Twice daily, pujas are held to celebrate the relic and offer visitors and devotees the chance to get a glimpse of the tooth within its casing.

Royal Botanical Gardens

The Royal Botanical Gardens, located just outside of Kandy, are Sri Lanka’s largest landscaped gardens, spanning over 60 hectares. The origin of the gardens dates back to the 14th century, but they were not formally established until 1843 when the British took control of the Kandyan Kingdom. During the development of the gardens, a wide variety of plants were moved from several other parts of the island including Slave Island in Colombo and Kalutara on the west coast. Many species were also shipped from Kew Gardens in London, which has the most diverse botanical collection in the world. The Royal Botanical Gardens are now home to 4,000 different species of plants and over 10,000 trees, showcasing all of Sri Lanka’s flora and many other tropical plants not native to the island. Walk down avenues framed by towering coconut palms; shelter beneath the sprawling canopy of the old Javan fig tree; marvel at the extensive collection of orchids, and see giant fruit bats hanging in their hundreds from the tree tops.

The site is a popular place of pilgrimage, especially on full moon nights. The trek to the top of the mountain to see the footprint is via a steep staircase containing over 5000 steps. The trail is lined with many tea stalls and food shops which act as places of rest. Most people begin their hike at 2:30 am to reach the summit in time for sunrise. December to April is the season. stilt fishermen Sri Lanka

Stilt fishing, a unique Sri Lankan tradition, requires a great deal of patience. From a high position, the fisherman casts his line, and waits until a fish comes along to be caught. This method of fishing generally targets small fish. It involves waiting for several hours in complete silence to catch the fish. The majority of fishermen who practice this method of fishing are those who do not own modern fishing equipment. In this simple method all what they need is the stilt which is made by tying a small cross bar on to a pole, and the fishing rod. Fishermen themselves create this equipment, using the skills passed from one generation to another.

A basic fort was constructed by the Portuguese when they made their first landing to the island in 1505. When the Dutch eventually seized control of Galle, they made a number of improvements; including the enormous sea wall that still lines the fort. Galle Fort is an excellent example of what the synthesis between European and Asian architecture looks like.

I did a two week tour around Sri Lanka with my family in August. Our guide, Hemantha was incredibly knowledgeable of Sri Lanka; particularly when regarding the biodiversity and different landscapes. He was also very friendly and humorous, and made the trip so much more enjoyable! I would most definitely recommend using Off 2 Sri Lanka, and if you’re lucky enough to get Hemantha, trust that you’re in good hands! He’s an excellent driver as well!

We recently returned from a 10-day trip across Sri Lanka, and our experience wouldn’t have been half as memorable without Hemantha by our side. Traveling with my 6-year-old son, I was looking for someone who could not only show us the country’s beauty but also make the journey comfortable, flexible, and stress-free — and Hemantha exceeded every expectation. From the moment he picked us up at the airport, he was warm, friendly, and incredibly patient. He instinctively knew when to suggest the perfect stop for a snack, a scenic view, or a quick play break for my son. His car was always spotless, stocked with water, and driven with great care — making every long drive feel easy and safe. What stood out most was his deep knowledge of Sri Lanka — not just the famous landmarks but also the hidden gems and local spots we’d never have found on our own. If you’re visiting Sri Lanka, especially with family, I can’t recommend Menaka and Hemantha enough. Their professionalism, kindness, and passion for his country turned our holiday into a truly unforgettable adventure.

We had a really great tour guide with our driver Hemantha, he told us a lot about Srilanka and showed us. He knows practically all the birds in Srilanka, which was very impressive. His driving was pleasant. On the days when we haven't planned anything yet, he always asked what Enterprises could do in the area and made us suggestions. He has always responded to our wishes. He drove us everywhere, was always available to us, even spontaneously. Hemantha has a very pleasant, quiet manner and he was just a great companion. Already when booking our round trip I noticed the professionalism of Menaka. He was very efficient and also flexible to respond to our wishes. We extended our trip at short notice by 2 days, which led to some adjustments at the hotels, all no problem for Off2Srilanka. We are thrilled and it was a really great, even relaxed holiday for us. And this despite the fact that we really had many stations and had to pack again and again. The journeys through the country are simply impressive.

The smiling people of this island and their everyday life, the landscapes, flora and fauna...each stop of our tour was special for us and our photographs and the meeting of the whole group for an end of trip dinner offered by Menaka sealed in a welcoming and kind way the end of this experience that we recommend to everyone.
