Maunakea is a celebrated and storied place in the cultural traditions of Hawai'i. While it is the dwelling place of the goddess Poli'ahu it is also associated with the Hawaiian deities Lilinoe and Waiau. The summit was considered the realm of the gods and in ancient times was kapu (forbidden) to all but the highest chiefs and priests. Occasionally Hawaiian ali'i (royalty) would make the long trek to the top, the last royal visitor being Queen Emma in 1881 who led her companions on the arduous 6 hour journey to the top to see the summit and rejuvenate herself in sacred Lake Waiau. The White Mountain Legends of the Mountain - Poli´ahu While today Maunakea is home to 13 international observatories and recieves thousands of visitors every year it remains a sacred place for the people of Hawai'i. On the the fourth Saturday of every month MKVIS hosts community speakers who speak about Mauna O Wakea from a cultural perspective.

Our tour guide, Chris, kept us entertained on the trip up the mountain. The Hawaiian history and beliefs were new to me. The views were amazing. It was like stepping out onto the moon and seeing the most amazing sunset. The island has been very rainy for our visit - but up above the clouds - the sky was clear. It was a fun adventure.

Awesome experience. Never saw stars like that. Tour guides were very knowledgeable and good hosts. Much better on a tour than it would have been on our own

We chose the Mauna Kea Summit Sunset & Star Gazing Tour to celebrate our anniversary, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. Our guide, John, was friendly, knowledgeable, and fun. The sunset was beautiful, and the star gazing was absolutely unreal. Seeing the stars through the telescope was an experience we’ll never forget. The team kept everyone comfortable with warm jackets, hot chocolate, oatmeal, and snacks, which were much appreciated in the cold temperatures. A special thank you to Chris for taking wonderful photos of us, allowing us to fully enjoy the experience. We also loved that the team shared all the pictures afterward. And a special mention to John’s playlist on the drive back down! the quiet, relaxing music was the perfect ending to an incredible evening. Thank you for making our anniversary so memorable. We highly recommend this tour!

Our tour guides were very good. However, do not expect the parkas and mittens to fit if you are taller and larger than average. I was led to believe that they had appropriate sizes for everyone. My husband was very uncomfortable for the majority of the trip. It honestly was not what we were expecting. On the photography part, it took several minutes for a group to have pics done. Many others had to wait an extended amount of time for their turns. Again, tour guides were knowledgeable, just really not worth the money for our experience.

Our tour up the Mauna Kea was my grandsons favorite. Our tour went beyond expectations. Totally recommend this tour to everyone thinking of visiting the summit of Mauna Kea. Tay was totally awesome with his description of the night sky.

Incredible experience. We did this for our 5th anniversary celebration. Tay was incredibly knowledgeable about all the history, culture, and mythology behind the island’s landscape and stars/constelllations. This tour was in-depth and worth the experience compared to traveling on your own to the summit of Mauna Kea. We stopped at the NASA Observatory before the summit for sunset. Then proceeded about 1000 feet down and spent about 2 hours stargazing and learning a lot of history and facts behind the stars and constellations. This time of year we’re able to see the Southern Cross which is not visible in the northern hemisphere. Bundle up and enjoy the spectacular view!

This was absolutely amazing! So glad my husband and I did it! Well worth the price! Tay and Jon were great, they were very knowledgeable about the Hawaiian culture and islands and did a fantastic job talking about the different stars planets and constellations. They were so fun be talk with and funny when necessary. Very professional and easy going. It’s definitely a trip we will never forget!
