Mauna Kea Summit

Maunakea is a celebrated and storied place in the cultural traditions of Hawai'i. While it is the dwelling place of the goddess Poli'ahu it is also associated with the Hawaiian deities Lilinoe and Waiau. The summit was considered the realm of the gods and in ancient times was kapu (forbidden) to all but the highest chiefs and priests. Occasionally Hawaiian ali'i (royalty) would make the long trek to the top, the last royal visitor being Queen Emma in 1881 who led her companions on the arduous 6 hour journey to the top to see the summit and rejuvenate herself in sacred Lake Waiau. The White Mountain Legends of the Mountain - Poli´ahu While today Maunakea is home to 13 international observatories and recieves thousands of visitors every year it remains a sacred place for the people of Hawai'i. On the the fourth Saturday of every month MKVIS hosts community speakers who speak about Mauna O Wakea from a cultural perspective.

5.00Experience was one of a kind. There is a lot of bumpy travel but the views of the sunset and stars were unbelievable. A few of the members of our group were affected by the altitude but its hard to predict that in advance.

5.00The temperature difference was shocking. We left the beach. It was 85° in the morning and on the top of the mountain it was 30°. The sunset in the stargazing was amazing.

They won’t cancel even in bad weather

1.00They knew the forecast … check here: http://mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu/forecast/mko/ I trusted as they said on their website that they would cancel if bad weather, but they didn’t, and we saw no stars. There were other companies there so this is not the only bad company. Save yourself money by driving to the visitor center to see the stars. The drive is easy and parking is free. That’s walking distance to where these tour companies park.

5.00This was an incredible journey that takes you to the top of the summit with knowledgeable guides - learnt a lot about the geology and geography and also a good bit about the astronomy as we ascended to the top. We then saw the sunset from the summit, followed by some really outstanding stargazing in some of the darkest skies in the US. Zach was our combination guide/photographer for the tour - learnt a lot from him, not just on unique aspects of the geography/geology but also got some great tips on photographing the Milky Way from the summit. The total tour time (depending on pick up location) is between 7-8 hours. We had a mix of solo travellers, families, friends groups, as well as couples in our tour - it is ideal for everyone !

5.00This was 100% worth it. Sometimes tours kinda feel like a trap or a waste of time/money, but seeing Mauna Kea sunset was 1000% worth it, SO beautiful. The stargazing through the telescope was also really cool. John and Tay were great tour guides.

5.00Going to the summit of Mauna Kea was in the top three experiences of my life. Tay was our tour guide and he was excellent, I can't imagine someone having so much knowledge of the solar system. The tour was on point with all types of snacks, and hot chocolate when needed. Thanks for the great experience.
