• A wetlands oasis from the sprawl of Bogota living.

  We've only been birding for about 18 months and looked forward to exploring wetland birds in a city as big as Bogota. Getting to the meeting point was a 40 minute Uber ride as it is located in the beautiful Parque La Florida on the city's edge. We were awed by the beauty and expanse of the wetland area and our guide Paulo from Truco tours and Paco and Elsy from Bakata Pajarera did a wonderful job of identifying birds and explaining the importance of the wetlands for the birds and people of Bogota. While parts of the park are open to the public, getting access to the best birding spots required our guides and was well worth it. We really appreciated our guides' knowledge of the wetlands and the efforts of their partnership to help preserve the integrity of the environment in a city with a growing economy. We were happy to learn the government's efforts to preserve the land despite the visible signs of encroachment by new construction. While we did not get to see the endemic and endangered tingua bogotana or Bogota rail, we did see 24 species of which 13 were lifers for us. Highlights included the incredibly beautiful scarlet ibis in flight, glossy ibis, the endemic spot-flanked gallinule, the yellow hooded black bird, andean duck, and white-bellied woodstar. If we return to Bogota we will definitely do another tour. It was a welcome respite from the sprawl of Bogota.

• Birding in Bogota Wetlands (La Florida)

  The tour was fantastic! It exceeded our expectations . We are a group of four people from Canada and it was our first time in Colombia and it was a great introduction to the local birders and photography enthusiasts. We arrived from Canada early that morning and there were several delays before we could join the tour. Paulo the tour manager was in constant contact with me and we were able to join the tour at the second stop. He was very helpful before and during the tour.   Our flights were delayed but Paulo waited for us. He was knowledgeable about the area and the birds and the rest of the group were ultra friendly.
