What do medieval winemaking nuns have to do with a 19-year-old Black American girl dancing in a banana skirt in Paris?
On this tour, we connect those dots, tracing how Montmartre came to be, and the larger global forces that drew Black Americans, Africans, and Caribbeans to this very special part of Paris.
On this walk, you’ll get:
A clear, engaging history of Montmartre beyond the usual stories
The chance to see the neighborhood’s major sites through a fresh lens
A local guide who knows how to avoid most of the crowds (and pigeons )
A deeper understanding of how movement and migration shape places, and why Montmartre became a crossroads for Black life and culture
Service animals allowed
Public transportation options are available nearby
Suitable for all physical fitness levels
There is some uphill walking
Vigne du Clos Montmartre
We begin at a small vineyard tucked among apartment buildings, a reminder that Montmartre was once covered in vines. The wine sold here set the stage for a community that would eventually welcome an extension of the Harlem Renaissance.
La Petite Maison Rose de Montmartre (Since 1920)
We pass one of Montmartre’s most photographed streets and buildings, a picture-perfect moment.

This experience is a must do!!! Antonia was inviting, knowledgeable , personable and just EXCELLENT!!! We could tell she had done her research. She had a visual component to our tour, as she shared iPad illustrations and images of historical artwork, and images from historical events. The exciting part was how touched we all were as she shared WWI information about how black American soldiers came to Paris to fight in the war and we had a grandfather who actually fought; sent $ home to family to purchase property that still belongs to them! Antonia beamed with excitement and awe to have made a connection to this history. I can’t say enough about how she treated this tour and presented it as a gift and with a parting gift to our group!!! THANKS, ANTONIA!!! Thank you Montmartre and Paris for the thrill and the incredible black history of your past!!! This tour is A MUST DO!!!

This was a very informative walk. Antonia knows her “Black History” on Montmartre here in Paris, France. You could tell because she was very passionate about what she was speaking about.
