• Fabulous day out with a fantastic guide

  I booked this tour direct via Blackwood Tours' own website and it was much cheaper than the price shown on here. Robert was very efficient with communication and it was all simple and straight forward. When I got off the ship Michael was there to meet me. Easy to spot him - red shirt AND a sign with my name on! Great minibus - would have seated 8 with lots of big windows to enjoy the spectacular views. There were 5 of us on the tour as a group of 3 had cancelled. The weather was fortunately fantastic and we had incredible views all the way. Michael drove the minibus and gave us a running commentary via a microphone which was clear and easy to hear. It was a masterpiece of a commentary, in my opinion, - a fabulous mixture of personal, social, historical and local knowledge delivered with clarity and humour. Michael absolutely went out of his way to accommodate all our wishes and needs. He will stop where ever you want - he has a great set itinerary which he is more than happy to adapt to the wishes of those on the tour on that day. His stops included great photo opportunities of the views combined with local interest shopping like the chocolate place and as many toilet/coffee buying stops as wanted - which were not many for my group but were certainly offered. We did stop at a lovely cafe/bakery along the trail in the morning to use the toilets and if you appreciate artisan baked goods this is a good place to buy your lunch. Otherwise, you get another chance to buy lunch at a sort of mini-market store near the beach which sells coffee and a wide selection of supermarket type items including sandwiches. There are outdoor tables and chairs at the beach where we ate our lunch and then had time to explore on our own. The tour was supposed to be 6 hours but we were such an enthusiastic bunch it actually ended up being 7.5 hrs at no extra charge. Michael was ever mindful of the ship's departure time and at no point did I feel like we were at any risk of missing our ship. He even made a special stop at the other cruise ship terminal for us to get photos with the fiddle at the end of the day before dropping us back at our ship. This was a rich and almost bespoke experience that I cannot recommend highly enough for those with a sense of adventure who want to see and learn about Cape Breton from a born and bred colourful local who really is a very special person. Thank you Blackwood Tours and Michael for a brilliant fun and memorable day!

  It was a beautiful scenic drive, but it takes some time to get to the best views. Our guide, Mike, was very friendly and informative, giving us the perspective of a native Cape Bretoner.

  This was our favorite excursion on our cruise! Small group in a small van/bus was much more enjoyable than those larger bus tours! Our guide Jim was amazing and so knowledgeable having lived there so long. He was open to us asking questions and he really had a great personality. He made several stops along the way and was so patient with us making sure we all got photos and even took some for us so we could both be in the photos. The stops he made included a great sandwich shop as well as a family-owned Belgium chocolate shop and a glass-blowing shop. He also made sure to pull over at every major overview spot. The fall foliage views were absolutely stunning! Since our group was less than 20 people, we never felt rushed. • Best Cabot Trail Adventure

  Great foliage tour of Cabot Trail. Gorgeous scenery. What made the trip the best was our guide,Michael. He was a storehouse of info and very personable and entertaining. As a local from Cape Breton he really knew the history and the best spots for the best visuals.

  Very beautiful day for this trip with gorgeous fall colors. It’s a long drive and Michael was very solicitous of our comfort. We had a beautiful day so the scenery was magnificent.

  Great way to see highlights of the area. Beautiful scenery and interesting stops. Our guide was very accommodating and took us to more sights than we expected.

  Very nice drive but very long…of the six hour excursion, five were spent driving. The tour guide was. Excellent …gave us a lot of local information.

  We couldn’t wait to get off the van. It was basically seven hours of nonstop talking. The tourist itinerary was as described with two nice stops at a chocolate store and a glass blowing location. Mike advised us to pick up lunch at a little store so we would have more time which was great and we had a nice stop for lunch. BUT…less personal history and less political opinions would have been more appreciated. Mike warned us he talked a lot but most tour operators know to ratchet down the commentary on the end of the journey especially if you are returning on the same route you went out on.
