Rose Hall Great House

This Rose Hall Great House is an early 18th century plantation home that sits on a high elevation on thousands of acres in Rose Hall, Montego Bay. The Rose Hall Great House was once owned by the famous and certainly one of the wickedest plantation owners to walk the land of Jamaica, Annie Palmer. She owned hundreds of slaves. This house became haunted after her gruesome death in 1831. The house is scary to look at even in the daytime. There is no stop at the Rose all Great House on your way to Negril however, your tour guide will tell you the history and slow down so that you can take photos.

Greenwood Great House

The Greenwood Great House (Plantation home) was constructed in the early 18th Century. Like most, if not all the other Great Houses in Jamaica, the Greenwood Great House was built at high elevation. One could say that this was a strategy used back in the plantation era as a means of overlooking the plantation and also for security purposes. This house, unlike the Rose Hall Great House, is not haunted but of a more peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The history and the architecture of the house is what will blow you away. As you pass by, feel free to take photos when your tour guide slows down.

  • Sung and spiritual tour!

Being a fan of Bob Marley I loved the spiritual environment and the story told and sung by our guide Rasta. Very nice vegetation and clean site. Possibility to smoke your weed during the tour. Very moving the photos and the house remained intact. Birthplace where Bob's grandparents grew up. Tombs on the spot. I give a 9/10 because catch a tourist some moments and tour rushed by our guide of the bus who wanted to leave before sunset. Bad car abstain because 2 hours turning and climbing. Worth the trip.

It was a beautiful and very spiritual experience. First and foremost, thank you to our driver—he was kind, respectful, and got us there and back safely. The Rastafarian guide had everyone’s attention and did great business for everyone. Visiting Nine Mile and seeing everything in person was amazing, and our tour guide made it even more special. It’s an experience my family and I will never forget.

It’s a long day but well worth it. Marlon was a great tour guide. At Bob Marley’s home it was very engaging. We could feel the vibes as if we were there with him. NOTE: Bring cash for tips.

My husband and I went on and cruise and one of the ports was Jamaica. 🇯🇲 We took the Bob Marley tour. We had a group of 22 people. Our tour guide Tee, Kalisha, & driver Mr. Sinclair they were great. The tour at the estate was a lot of fun and informative. If you are looking for something to do in Montego Bay Jamaica. Go on an adventure to the estate it’s a treat.

This was a very interesting tour, 9 mile was a great experience! The roads were very narrow and bumpy, recommend that people with car sickness do not do this. Also, this is very much aimed at adults, and is marijuana friendly, almost encouraged- would not bring children.

  • Interesting but be careful and have an open mind

We did a tour of the Bob Marley birth placer and mausoleum at Nine Mile with our tour operator TUI and came from the coast near Montego Bay. It is a very winding and dangerous road to get to Nine Mile and the museum, but to be fair, this is Jamaica after all and we can't expect 4 lane super highways. After arriving opposite the Bob Marley museum we were ushered into a shack at the side of the road where we were encouraged via very hard sell methods by the rastas running the outfit to buy cannabis and other items made out of cannabis. Don't forget that it is perfectly legal to buy and smoke cannabis in Jamaica. However, it is most definitely not legal in the UK, Europe or most of the USA so I am quite surprised that the tour operator agreed to us being dropped outside this shack with the drugs. You must be very firm and say very clearly you are not interested and walk away and even saying something like “No man” will help you in this regard. Even if you do wish to buy their stuff, it is very expensive to buy it here I am told – twice the going rate at the coast. Once we got into the museum, we had to wait for about 15 minutes in the gift shops which are very, very overpriced before we were led up a stairway past murals and photos of Bob and his family into a courtyard. Off of this courtyard there were again multiple shops and a small bar, all of these things were very overpriced and I encourage you to stay well clear. Eventually our tour guide from the museum arrived to show us around. This guy is well known on the Internet and YouTube from previous reviews and his name is “Captain Crazy” and he has a with a very unique laugh “haaaaaah…..” To be fair to him he was quite funny and amusing. There is not a great deal at the museum; just a battered old kitchen, a living room full of weird dolls with photos on the wall of Bob, his mother and his family and a room with some of Bob's discs on the wall and a clapped-out old piano. We were then taken out into a courtyard different from the first one where we were played some of Bob Marley's music for 20 minutes, all of the time being encouraged to tip generously which I found annoying considering the extortionate entry fee of $35. Eventually we were taken up a steep path to where Bob’s grave and mausoleum are located, alongside the mausoleum of his mother. You are allowed to enter the mausoleums but you are not allowed to take any photos of his grave. I felt quite honoured to be in the presence of Bob having been a fan of his for all my life. He died when I was only 13. You can have a photo on the stone where he sat and composed many of his songs, located just outside his little out-house near his mausoleum. Overall, I thought the tour was interesting and I am glad I did it but it is very overpriced to the point of being almost extortion with constant demands for tips which became extremely annoying. I hardly learned anything about Bob himself which isn't already widely known. I feel that Bob himself would be appalled at the commercialisation of his name which is expressed at this museum; Bob was a humble man who loved life and was not excessively commercial in his world view and I'm sure he would turn in his grave at the thought that his name was being commercialised in quite this manner. I am young minded and at heart and I personally quite enjoyed Captain Crazy (our tour guide) and found him amusing. However, what I would say is that some people could find him extremely offensive. I am a middle-aged white man and he often referred to me as “captain” probably in reference to Bob's father who was similar age to me and also white. He also made references to the colour of some mixed race people in our group and called them “cappuccino”, this was largely laughed off by the individuals concerned but I could imagine that some people would find this mocking and very offensive so I would urge people who may wish to take this tour to be or to have an open mind and just go with it. In summary I would say that the tour is worth doing only if you are a Bob Marley fan and would like to visit his final resting place as a tribute to a great musician and songwriter, a great guitarist and a great Jamaican. However, I think the place is excessively commercialised and you won't learn a lot about Bob on the tour. You also need to open your wallet/pocketbook a lot and have a broad mind.
