Instead of a simple left-right sightseeing walk it offers a structured narrative like how communities lived, where they worshipped, what their daily life was like, and how centuries of change shaped today’s Castle District. Buda Castle
At this stop, we’ll take a closer look at the Royal Palace — one of the most iconic landmarks of Budapest. Over the centuries, it has been built, destroyed, and rebuilt multiple times. Originally a medieval stronghold, it was gradually transformed into a royal residence, reflecting the power struggles and architectural tastes of different eras. From Gothic to Baroque to Neoclassical elements, the palace’s layers tell the story of Hungary’s turbulent history.
During the expansion of the Royal Palace under King Sigismund in the early 15th century, a Gothic-style royal chapel was constructed as part of the palace complex. Today, the foundations of this medieval church are still visible in the courtyards below. These remains mark one of the earliest monumental royal construction phases in Buda, initiated by Sigismund as part of his effort to turn the palace into a true imperial residence.

5.00A really fantastic few hours learning about Hungarian history with an incredibly passionate and knowledgeable guide. This is not your usual generic stroll around one of Europes most historic cities…this is an education and a lesson that you come away from informed, amazed and way more knowledgeable about the history, the architecture and the very birth of the Hungarian nation as we now know it… 3.5 hrs very very well spent 👏👏👏

5.00I arrived and it was a very dark and cold night in December. The thought of walking for 3 hours didn't seem fun anymore and I was less than enthusiastic. Lol Quickly my attitude turned around, and I realized I was being guided on the most amazing historical and architectural journey back in time. Máté was not only knowledgeable, but passionate about everything. It was like being in the best history and architecture/interior design class that I've ever had. I found myself recording really long videos just because it was so much fascinating information, I wanted to be able to go back and listen again. He isn't just a tour guide he's a wealth of knowledge and brings it all into perspective, better yet...brings it all to light. He makes you want to step back into time and live amongst the people of the long gone eras and observe it all in person. So much history in this city. I would take any tour he offers and infact I did go on another personal tour with him the following day. I feel like I stumbled on a hidden gem finding Máté to show me the streets of Budapest. ✨ He made my solo experience in the city so memorable and I know it wouldn't have been the same without meeting him. Thank you Máté. 🙏

5.00This was by far one of the best walking tours I’ve ever been on. I learned so much about not only Buda Castle, but also the history and culture of Hungary, as well as its beautiful architecture. You can tell Máté is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about his country’s history and architecture, and it makes this tour very special and memorable. I could’ve walked around all day listening to him as he pointed out unique features in the buildings explaining the meaning and significance behind each of them. Definitely a tour worth booking!

5.00Was a great tour of Buda Castle - learned a lot and enjoyed what we saw. Maybe work on timing as it seemed really rushed at the end and would have liked to learned a bit more about the church and surroundings.

5.00Matthew was amazing, he talked about the history of Buda castle and explained the architecture and archaeological with so much passion it was amazing. Lots of little details we pointed out and in his iPad he had lots of pictures to show how it must have looked.

5.00Thank you to our amazing tour guide for such an informative tour. Yes, it was over 2.5 hours long but don’t let that put you off. The time absolutely flew and it was full of varied information about the long history of the castle and the district around it. Hats off again to our tour guide, an exceptional, passionate young man.
