Budapest Jewish Heritage: Synagogues, Shoes, Secrets & Flódni — Private Walking Tour (2.5 hours)

Great / Central Synagogue (Nagy Zsinagoga)

Stop at the Dohány Street Synagogue, also known as the Great Synagogue is a historical building in Erzsébetváros, the 7th district of Budapest, Hungary. It is the largest synagogue in Europe, seating 3,000 people and is a centre of Neolog Judaism. You will discover not only why this synagogue is unique architecturally, but also find out about the fate of Hungarian Jewry at the time of the Second World War, as well as learning how many internationally famous personages were Hungarian Jews.

I’ve done several walking tours in Budapest, but this Jewish Heritage tour was by far the most powerful and memorable. It’s not just a tour — it’s a journey through history, culture, and deeply moving human stories. Walking through the Jewish Quarter, you don’t just see the landmarks, you begin to understand what happened here and why it still matters today. Our guide was exceptional. The way they connected historical facts with personal stories made everything feel real and relatable, not distant or textbook-like. You could feel the weight of history, especially at places like the Shoes on the Danube Bank. Visiting the Dohány Street Synagogue was a highlight — an incredible place with so much history and meaning behind it. What really stood out is the quality of the experience. This is not a crowded, rushed free tour — it’s a well-organized, professional experience with a guide who is attentive, engaging, and easy to follow. This tour strikes the perfect balance between education and emotion. It’s respectful, engaging, and truly eye-opening. If you want more than just sightseeing — if you want to actually understand Budapest — this is the tour to take.

We were all very disappointed with our tour. Our promised itinerary was never delivered; we only saw two of the three synagogues, never went to the shoes memorial, nor had the opportunity to taste flodini. Our guide was excellent - very knowledgeable, personable, and easy to understand. Another issue was that we never received the senior discount as advertised. After numerous calls to Viator agents, we were told that they “would get back to us,” but they never did. We feel we were wrongly overcharged (especially since we never experienced the entire itinerary), and would not recommend this tour.

We had a 2.5 hour tour with Petra. She was great. She met us at our hotel, answered lots of our questions, even if they were asking about statues and buildings that were along our route but not part of the tour. She was very friendly and knowledgeable. We took the metro from the Jewish quarter to the shoes on the Danube with her and she helped us understand the metro so we could do it on our own. Highly recommend

We visited a house Synagogue and shared a snack in the kitchen. So interesting to see a small poorer Synagogue. Gabriella was warm and fascinating.
