Elmina Castle, located on Ghana’s central coast, was built by the Portuguese in 1482 and is the oldest European structure in sub-Saharan Africa. Originally established as a trading post for gold, it later became one of the most significant sites in the transatlantic slave trade. Thousands of enslaved Africans were confined in its dark, overcrowded dungeons before being forced through the infamous “Door of No Return” and shipped across the Atlantic. The castle later fell under Dutch and British control, continuing its role in colonial exploitation. Today, Elmina Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as a place of reflection, education, and remembrance—honoring those who suffered and preserving the lessons of history for generations to come.

I would give Zion Tours Africa 10 stars if I could! Since this was my sister's and my first trip to Ghana, we wanted a knowledgeable local guide who could recommend museums, events, and accommodations. From the start, Dennis was incredibly responsive to our inquiries, and we were blown away by the thoughtfully curated itinerary and his passion for providing us with the best possible experience. Our scheduled events allowed us to connect deeply with our roots, ancestors, traditions, and the rich culture of our people in beautiful Ghana and West Africa. Trip Highlights: • Nkyinkyim Museum in Ada Foah – A powerful space dedicated to African heritage and history. The museum's founder, artist Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, created the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park at the must-see Legacy Site in Montgomery, Alabama. • Elmina Castle – Visiting this historic site, the first European trading post in sub-Saharan Africa and later a holding site for millions of West Africans during the 500-year slave trade, was profoundly moving. • Batik Fabric Workshop – We designed and stamped our own Batik fabric, a hands-on experience that connected us to Ghanaian artistry. • Kakum National Park – Walking across six suspension bridges on the breathtaking Kakum Canopy Walkway was an unforgettable adventure. • Ancestral Slave River in Assin Manso • Lemon Beach Resort – Our favorite stay! Spacious rooms with scenic beach balconies, a pristine beachfront, fantastic food, and an excellent staff made it a perfect retreat. • Pottery making and drumming lessons Exceptional Tour Guides: Dennis and Achi were the perfect guides—accommodating, flexible, and incredibly respectful. They easily handled last-minute itinerary adjustments and even helped us negotiate in the markets! Zion Tours facilitated a life-changing journey and a profound connection to Ghana. I cannot wait to return! I wholeheartedly recommend Zion Tours Africa—you will NOT be disappointed!
