One of Chengdu’s most popular attractions, this panda park 18km north of the city centre is the easiest way to glimpse Sichuan’s most famous residents. Don't, however, make the mistake of thinking you'll be seeing wild pandas. They are kept in large enclosures and have a dedicated team of scientists and keepers tending to their every need. As well as living, breathing pandas, there are some fascinating panda information centres and museums explaining panda conservation and husbandry.

Home to nearly 120 giant and 76 red pandas, the base focuses on getting these notoriously love-shy creatures to breed and has been remarkably successful at it. March to May is the ‘falling in love period’ (wink wink). If you visit during summer or autumn, you may see tiny newborns in the nursery incubators.

Chengdu Panda Base is a public non-profit breeding and research institute for giant pandas, red pandas, and other rare animals, located in Chengdu, Sichuan, China.It started with 6 giant pandas that were rescued from the wild. By 2008, it had 124 panda births, and the captive panda population has grown to 83.

The Giant Pandas and the Red Pandas have an insane attraction. Even if the Giant Pandas are in many smaller enclosures and the Red Pandas in large enclosures, you have a wonderful opportunity to admire these endangered animals. We took a hell of a lot of pictures. Definitely worth it, even if you are not alone - as with all tourist attractions in China. It is advisable to come very early when the station opens. A few hours is enough so you can spend the afternoon in Chengdu

No communication from the attendants. Unable to understand the tour as it was not offered in English. Chinese only. Wasn’t made aware of extra charges for bus inside the place.

Very knowledgeable tour guide. She was very good at spotting pandas and finding best spots for photos. Highly recommend from as a solo traveler.

Excellent value for a half day tour. The centre was packed with both Red and Giant Pandas. My guide Wu was excellent and was also very interesting to have conversations with.

Libby was a great guide. Very professional, knowledgable and friendly. We saw many Pandas up close and she moved us through the crowds very well. The car service to and from the facility was excellent. Can recommend.

We booked for entry without a guide in the morning. Everything perfect, as soon as we arrived we showed our passport and entered without any problem.

We spent a fantastic and very informative morning with our guide, Johnny, at the Panda Research Base. It was great that we arrived early in the morning, as the crowds were manageable and the pandas were very active. Johnny was also great at guiding us through various paths that avoided big crowds and allowed us to see loads of both giant and red pandas.
