• A Must‑See Medieval Treasure on Lake Geneva

  I would give this experience 10 stars if I could. Visiting Château de Chillon was truly one of the highlights of my time in Montreux — beautifully preserved, deeply historical, and so thoughtfully presented. I went on a Saturday afternoon (April 18) and was pleasantly surprised that there was no real wait. It was busy, but the entry process was smooth and efficient. I purchased my ticket through Viator, and the staff member who checked me in — even though it was her first day — was absolutely lovely. Everyone I encountered was warm, professional, and welcoming. Once inside, the experience is self‑paced, and I highly recommend adding the audio guide for just 6 CHF. It’s incredibly well done and brings the castle’s history to life — medieval daily life, the Dukes of Savoy, the architecture, the prison, the great halls, and the defensive structures. You learn so much without ever feeling overwhelmed. The castle itself is stunning. There are over 40 rooms, and you’ll navigate narrow stairways, uneven stone floors, and tight corridors — all part of the authentic medieval experience. Because of this, I’d recommend it for adults, teens, and older children (around 12+). It’s not ideal for strollers or very young kids, and elderly visitors should be mindful of the steps and surfaces. Comfortable shoes are a must. Even on a rainy day, most of the visit is indoors, but on a clear day the views are spectacular. Through the narrow arrow slits and defensive windows, you can see Lake Geneva, the Alps, and the Rochers‑de‑Naye — absolutely breathtaking. Getting there is easy. You can take the 201 bus from Montreux Gare, or do what I did and take the train to Veytaux‑Chillon (a 2–3 minute ride). I ended up walking back to my hotel along the lakeside promenade — about 35–45 minutes depending on your pace — and it was beautiful. Before you leave, don’t miss the gift shop. It’s charming, well‑curated, and full of special items: postcards, books, handmade Swiss bracelets, local wine, and even award‑winning chocolates and caramels. The two women working there were so kind and helpful, and I found wonderful souvenirs for my family. Overall, this is an unmissable experience for anyone who appreciates history, architecture, cultural preservation, or simply wants to step into another era for an hour or two. Château de Chillon is beautifully maintained, educational, fascinating, and truly memorable. I’m so glad I made it part of my trip. Highly, highly recommend.

  We booked 2 hours and it was little, gave the desire to stay well longer. Beautiful place, on the edge of Lake Léman overlooking the mountains that in winter were covered in snow. Many richly explained historical details. There is cafeteria and even cellar with own wine. Family ticket or discount with Swiss Travel Pass.

  We visited while in Montreux, a pleasant 50 minute stroll from the centre of town. It was a great way to spend an hour or two, informative and nice to have a suggested route. We didn't opt for the audio tour, but we felt we didn't need it. Information boards in French, English and German all around. 15CHF entry we thought was really good value, similar to a National Trust property in the UK

  What a beautiful Chateau on the lakeside. It was very interesting with so many different levels to explore. The restoration has been magnificent. Utterly magnificent with interesting anecdotes.

  Nestled between Lake Geneva and the mountains, Chillon Castle offers an exceptional panorama. The rocky islet on which the castle was built was both a natural protection and a strategic location to guard the passage between northern and southern Europe. In the heart of its 46 rooms, you can relive the history of the fabulous Savoy banquets, the arrival of the Bernese in the Pays de Vaud and the presence of the Vaud. The castle became famous thanks to Jean-Jacques Rousseau who decided to set the story of his novel "New Heloise" here in the 18th century. From then on, he was a source of inspiration for several artists such as Lord Byron and Victor Hugo. I recommend renting an audio guide at the boutique located after crossing the bridge, to explore all the buildings and courtyards of the castle.   Very pretty chateau on the lake. So easy to find. We walked along from Montreax and bought tickets on the gate I recommend you get the audio guide. I got one and I'd summarise the rooms for my husband. Great fun! Such an interesting place and loads of facts on the guide.
