Itinerary:

  • Christchurch – We start by leaving Ōtautahi Christchurch, also known as New Zealand's Garden City. As we head south, our knowledgeable guide will point out some of the central city highlights.
  • Canterbury Plains - Travelling across the Rakaia bridge and inland towards mid-Canterbury, you will notice both the region’s unique braided river ecosystem and patchwork fields. Farms on the plains are home to a variety of activities, including crop cultivation, viticulture, dairy farming, and livestock production.
  • Fairlie Bakehouse (10 minutes) - Nestled in the charming farming township of Fairlie, this stop is always popular with guests. It is especially stunning in autumn as the trees lining the streets and Burkes Pass turn a vibrant orange. It is here that you can enjoy a famous Fairlie Bakehouse pie. Our team’s personal favourite is the classic steak and cheese!
  • Lake Tekapo and The Church of the Good Shepherd (15 minutes) - Next up we stop at Lake Tekapo. Surrounded by the Southern Alps and the Mackenzie District’s distinct tussocked landscape, you will be greeted with panoramic views. From late November to early January, the famous lakeshore is adorned with clusters of wild lupins. While here, we will stop at one of New Zealand’s most photographed locations; the Church of the Good Shepherd.
  • Lake Pukaki (10 minutes) - Our final stop before arriving in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park is Lake Pukaki. With its shifting colours ranging from ice to deep blue depending on the weather, this glacier-fed lake stands out from other alpine lakes in the region. On clear days, enjoy uninterrupted views of Aoraki rising from the lake’s edge.
  • Aoraki Mt Cook National Park (2 - 2.5 hours*) - Welcome to Aoraki Mt Cook National Park! Established in 1953, roughly 40% of the park is covered by glaciers, with Haupapa being the longest at approximately 23 kilometres. Impressively, 19 mountains - including Aoraki - within the area also stand at over 3000 metres tall. Once you arrive, you have the option to embark on the Tasman Glacier Viewpoint Track or explore Mt Cook Village, taking in sights such as the Visitor Centre and Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre. Alternatively, if you’d prefer an aerial view of the mountains, we can arrange a scenic flight for you and your group (booked and sold separately).
  • Tasman Glacier Viewpoint Track - Leading through old terminal moraines of the Haupapa, this track offers incredible views of the glacier, surrounding river and Tasman Lake.
  • *Please note that due to potential delays from other customers or road conditions, the allocated time in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park to explore may be less than advertised. This may mean that you might be unable to fully complete walks etc. Your friendly guide will be able to assist you on the day with the best options available. At 2:15pm, please follow their instructions as they will provide the collection time to continue through to Tāhuna Queenstown.
  • High Country Salmon - Farewelling Aoraki/Mt Cook Village and making our way to Queenstown, we stop in at High Country Salmon; a local salmon farm where you can feed the fish and taste some of the freshest salmon in New Zealand.
  • Lindis Pass - Climbing in altitude, Lindis Pass has amazing views down through the valleys. In fact, it is one of only three alpine roads through the otherwise impassable Southern Alps (Kā Tiritiri o te Moana).
  • Jacksons Orchard* - As we get close to Tāhuna, we often stop at Jacksons Orchard to try or buy some delicious local fruit and/or real fruit ice cream (season dependent).
  • Kawarau Suspension Bridge - Nearing Queenstown, we then make our way through the stunning Kawarau Gorge passing stunning views, the Kawarau Suspension Bridge and the famous Roaring Meg Lookout.
  • Queenstown - As we enter New Zealand’s ‘adrenaline capital’, sit back and relax after a wonderful day exploring Lake Tekapo, Aoraki Mt Cook National Park, the Lindis, and the Kawarau Gorge. With your camera roll full, this day will definitely be something to brag about!

Please note additional stops are taken into consideration for toilet breaks.

As this is a one-way tour, luggage is included with your booking. Each person can bring one standard check in bag up to 23kg and 1 carry on type bag. If you have additional or overweight baggage, then additional charges will apply. Please select the number of additional or overweight bags on the extras page while booking.

I booked one day tour from Christchurch to Queenstown via Mt Cook and Tekapo. When I booked it, it doesn’t say the latter part can be a public bus. A few days later I booked, they asked to use intercity bus instead of the latter tour. They said it’s busy season and they didn’t know the other company’s tour’s availability until customers purchased. Then at least they should have mentioned it on the website. Since I booked other parts of my trip after I booked this tour, this was the only option I had at that point. If I knew this thing may happen in advance from the website description, I could have chosen the other tour (Cheeky Kiwi has the same one day tour which you do not need to change the buses). They said they would refund NZD 20 while I paid USD 233. I expect the refund amount should be half of the tour amount. I strongly recommend using Cheeky Kiwi travel instead so you do not need to have hassles and enjoy your vacation and the moment (not unnecessarily back and force communication with the company)! I merely leave negative reviews (see my past reviews) but this is the most upsetting tour experience!

  • Great way to get from Christchurch to Queenstown

Two operators that switch after Mt. Cook. The first part was great. We thought Nick was great and the van was comfortable. Nick provided a lot of interesting commentary, spoke loudly so everyone could hear, and was great with my child. I can’t seem to remember the name of the tour operator at the moment…. The switch off happened at the Hermitage hotel which was a nice surprise to get some time there. The second part was run by cheeky kiwi but less great. The van seats were less comfortable. I couldn’t hear the guide. The stops didn’t seem as spectacular (which isn’t the tour operators fault) and we skipped the suspension bridge but added an orchard stop, and I would’ve preferred the bridge. The high country salmon stop was kind of a waste too especially because we did a salmon stop on Lake Pukaki, which I loved. It was a long day, I think 13h in total, but it was the only way to get everything done so I am grateful!

Fantastic experience for travelers who want to see various beautiful viewing points in New Zealand as this ride goes all the way from Christchurch to Queenstown with multiple stops! Would recommend bringing enough layers as the hikes can get cold!

Fantastic tour. Got to take many pictures and see a lot of the nature on the south island. Definitely recommend doing a tour like this as opposed to flying. Lake Tekapo and Mt Cook were amazing and we got plenty of time to take pictures. James from Cheeky Kea was very friendly, took photos for us and was a lot of fun to interact with. Highly recommended.

This one-way overland tour was just what we needed to travel from Christchurch to Queenstown and enjoy the sights of the "southern Alps." Although our driver, Joe, was excellent, efficient and organized, it was surprising that he did not promote the overland transfer benefits of this trip for travelers like us. Joe's willingness to wait for an apparently tardy-for-pickup tour quest (who eventually was a 'no show' due to sickness) limited time available to visit the Tasman glacier, and less than anticipated given the online trip description, however as it turned out the limited time did not prove to be a detriment.

It was a great experience, I originally planned to take flight to Queenstown but I'm so glad I did this road trip. It made stops on most of the main spots that cannot be missed, lake tekapo was just amazing, and the Tasmanian river was so beautiful surrounded by mountains, just loved it. The driver was really friendly and made sure our food was halal. There were snacks and a very filling lunch from fairlie bakery , which kept us full throughout the road trip. It started pouring by the time we reached Mt cook , such as shame we couldn't get a good view of it but nevertheless, it was still amazing and I highly recommend it.

Our bus guide Linda was great. She kept n time while telling us everything all ng the way . The stop for breakfast was great as were the stops for Lake Tekapo. The weather being great made our travel even better as we could see Mt. Cook from distance admired its majestic look. All in all a great tour.
