Just returned from sub-arctic Canada in search of the northern lights. I’m happy to report not only did we see them (2 nights out of 4 and they were magnificent) but we had an extraordinary time beyond the lights. I could go on and on, but let me highlight: 1. The people: From our guide (Ward) to our bus driver (Tori) to the marketing crew who happened to be traveling with us (Alex and company), everyone was warm, incredibly knowledgeable and earnestly passionate about the lights, the polar bears (the outfit is known for their polar bear excursions in the fall), the integrity of the indigenous people (and many of the educators were of indigenous descent), and the land. Truly lovely spending so much time with them. 2. The variety and the education: Every night you head out over the ice and into the tundra to look for the lights. They break up the night’s headquarters with nice experiences — a yurt, a lounge, etc. During the day, they fill your time with hearty meals and interesting education—we learned about trapping, the culture, the science behind the auroras, the polar bears. We took a dog sled and learned all about that from Big Dog Dave and his family, who are renown for their dogs and racing. All experiences were high-quality and well-presented. 3. Dan’s Diner deserves its own bullet point. While all the food throughout is hearty but not gourmet, on one night, you’re feted to a multiple course gourmet feast on one of the ice buggies and the food is local and wonderful. The chefs are talented and passionate, and the whole experience is just terrific. Shout out to Chef Lars who took a lot of time chatting with us. 4. It’s not cheap, you’ll need to rent the outerwear (do NOT skimp unless you have had experience in the arctic and the clothes to match) and buy the plane tickets and insurance. Also, if you’re doing the lights, pick the 4-night photo trip. We are not photographers, our iPhones were just fine (really), but that extra night was invaluable in seeing the lights yet again. It’s a big trip and in some ways a challenging one (it’s really cold, you have to pack and dress carefully, you’re up late at night), but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I am so glad we invested our time and budget into doing it.

Despite the airline losing my luggage, I never was at a loss for anything. They go above and beyond looking after you. This trip is much more than just the lights.. which we saw every night. The dog sledding was exhilarating. I snow shoe at home always but this terrain was different. Easy though. Loved it. I was sweating in -30. Stopping the tundra buggy on the frozen river to get out and explore is worth the trip itself. Dan's diner provided an exquisite meal complete with scotch tasting.. glenlivit I believe.. at the ice bar by the fire outside with the lights dancing overhead. Churchill people proudly show you all their sites and respect for the land and environment. I am so impressed with Frontiers North I will return for beluga, or polar bears. Maybe both.
