The Clearwater Family's Farm is home to more wildlife per square meter than anywhere in Dunedin.
The intimate small group tours offer the chance to see Yellow-eyed penguins, NZ sea lions, NZ fur seals, albatross plus a wide variety of birdlife, in the wild.
Your professionally guided tour of no more than 10 people will take you to the private beach & wildlife reserves through our working farm at Cape Saunders on the Otago Peninsula.
A wild and untamed, dramatic environment that we are lucky enough to share with some of New Zealand's rarest species.
The aim is to give you a truly authentic wildlife experience and leave you with memories that will last for a lifetime.

Travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness
Level of fitness: This tour requires a moderate level of fitness. There are some hills to walk up and down and the beach walk also includes walking on sand and uneven ground. There are also several sets of steps and stairs therefore the terrain visited is not suitable for persons with walking disabilities.
Clothing: Our tours are an outdoor activity in a land where maritime weather prevails, the weather can change very quickly, regardless of the season. Always bring warm and waterproof clothes. For those that are unprepared we provide wind and rain proof jackets.
Footwear: Walking shoes/boots with good tread are recommended and necessary if conditions are wet or muddy.
Food: Tours are 4 hours in duration, so guests are welcome to bring pre-packed food and drink as there are no opportunities to stop for food during our tours.
Children: Small children might have difficulty keeping up on the trails. For safety reasons children are not able to sit on an adult's lap.
Medicines: Personal medicines etc. should be carried if required on all tours. Any medical condition which could potentially be a problem should be communicated to your guide at the start of a tour.
Photography: There will be some amazing photo opportunities during our tours so bring your best camera.
Cancellation Policy: To receive a full refund, travelers may cancel up to 24 hours before the experience start time in the local time zone. No refunds will be given after that time period.
Cruise Ship Passengers - Please advise us of the name of the cruise ship you are arriving on.
Not recommended for travelers with mobility issues.

The journey to Cape Saunders takes you through the beautiful backcountry and inlets of the Otago Peninsula where you will see a variety of wetland and wading birds amid breath-taking scenery. Arrive at Cape Saunders farm and experience a uniquely secluded breeding colony of NZ fur seals and a variety of sea birds from two stunning viewing locations overlooking the wild and rugged Pacific Ocean. 5.00It was amazing! We were able to see so much wildlife, our tour guide answered all questions, stoppped whenever asked for photos, and was really helpful in identifying different birds around the area. Beautiful view as well!

5.00Complete and well coordinated for cruise ship passengers. It was easy to meet up with our guide who was super friendly and welcoming, as well as enthusiastic about the experience. We got in a lot of good sights in the right amount of time with a little left over to have lunch in Dunedin and head back to our ship. Exactly what we were looking for in an excursion!

5.00We had an absolutely fantastic time on the Clearwater Wildlife tour — and it was largely thanks to Adrian! From the moment we met him at The Octagon in Dunedin, he was friendly, professional and incredibly knowledgeable about the wildlife and peninsula history. Adrian’s passion for the land and animals shone through as he guided us from the coast through the working farm out to the secluded reserve at Cape Saunders. With his expert eye (and helpfully supplied binoculars), we were lucky enough to spot nesting Yellow‑eyed Penguin pairs, sea lions, fur seals and a variety of shore and sea birds — seeing these rare species in their natural habitat was absolutely unforgettable.

5.00We had such a fun time on this excursion! We were on a cruise and it was the perfect day out. We met Rachel at the meeting point and she got us on a caravan with our tour guide Paula who was a hoot! You get up close with so much wildlife (seals, penguins, so many birds, sea lions) and the tour was so scenic and beautiful. We got back to the meeting point in plenty of time to explore the town, grab a bite, and get back to our ship. Highly recommend!

5.00Lisa did an excellent job pointing out wildlife and keeping us on pace. We saw 4 penguins at the last stop which was super exciting. Fur seals and sea lions aplenty, too! Lots of other birds as well. The group was less than 10 people which made for great conversation and opportunities to get close to the animals. This tour operates differently from others and gets you very close to wildlife in a safe and respectful manner. Highly recommend this tour! We also borrowed raincoats and received cookies!

5.00Amazing experience, completely exceeded my own expectations. Got to see many Fur Seals after touring some of the birds, then finishing the tour after seeing a few yellow eyed penguins. Nothing is garunteed on the tour yet they try to deliver everything. Would absolutely recommend this tour.

5.00We just returned to our hotel after an amazing time with Clearwater Wildlife Tours, and our awesome guide Tom! We couldn’t find an available penguin tour with the bigger companies, and I’m so glad we couldn’t since we fount this lovely, intimate, family-run company. I felt like we were out with friends (but friends who know what they’re doing). We saw so many birds, including the highlight: the rare Yellow-eyed Penguins! Also saw Fur Seals and Sea Lions. Tom gave us all the time we wanted at each stop along the way. I never felt “herded” or like they were on a schedule (Tom even asked if any of the nine of us needed to return exactly on time, since we found so many penguins and he didn’t want to rush us). Highly recommend Clearwater if you’re in Dunedin and want to see some wildlife.

5.00We went on the afternoon tour with Paula as our guide. She was excellent - really knowledgeable and good fun. We drove through beautiful scenery and got to see penguins, walruses, albatross, an elephant seal and many other seals as well as a load of other birds. Truly wonderful. Paula ensured we spotted all that there was to see and even gave us restaurant tips for later - dropping us off outside the restaurant to boot. A fabulous day. Thank you Paula.
