Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai (Vergina)
The tour begins from Thessaloniki following the National Road to reach the Royal Tombs of Vergina. The small village became very famous in 1977-78 due to the discovery of the Royal Tombs by the prominent Greek Professor and Archaeologist Andronicos. It was known with the name Aigai, was the first capital of Ancient Macedonia until 400 BC, when transferred to Pella and was supposed to be the burial place of all Macedonian Kings. Make your way inside the subterranean structure, accompanied by your guide and feast your eyes on some of the most important objects, which once belonged to Philip II – the King’s shield adorned with ivory and gold, the King’s gold-trimmed iron breast plate, Gold Diadems of unparalleled craftsmanship, the Golden Wreath of oak leaves, the gold plated collar and the Silver Burial Ums. Listen carefully, as your guide explains how inside the tomb of King Philip, a Golden Chest was discovered, containing the King’s bones, washed with wine and wrapped in purple cloth.

Pella, is an ancient city located in Central Macedonia, Greece, 45 km from Thessaloniki, best known as the historical capital of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia in the time of Phillip II and Alexander the Great. On the site of the ancient city is the Archaeological Museum of Pella, do not miss it.

3.00Visiting the Royal Tombs Museum was absolutely a great historical visit. Our driver/ guide was very kind and knowledgeable, however, here's a few key points in the future: 1. Punctuality is important (pick up 48 min late), 2. Please don't text on your phone while driving as this was very stressful for the kids and my wife. 3. The description of the tour is misleading as we were expecting an "English guided tour" when in reality, it's a driver not a guide. Overall we enjoy our visit.

4.00This was an excellent place to visit. The tour guide was very good. He provided helpful perspective about the area and the history of the sites/kings. But since he was not a licensed tour guide, he was not able to enter the ticketed areas for further guidance. For this reason I rated four instead of five stars. Despite that, this was still a fair price for a very good tour.

5.00We had a wonderful day. Michalis was a safe driver. He was very knowledgeable on local history of Agai and Pella. We ended our day at a lovely Taverna in Pella. I would highly recommend this tour to others. The 3 of us loved our day immersed in Macedonian History..

5.00The tour was a great contrast to being in Thessaloniki, the site of the city of Pella, while fascinating didn’t have great information but the Museum made up for it. I would recommend eating lunch at the Museum as the cafe at the Royal Tombs has a limited choice. The Royal Tombs was quite amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed our day.
