• A Company That Gets The Caribbean I-Factor

  When visiting the Caribbean, I think of four things. Three are the somewhat cliché: sun, sea, and sand. The additional one is islands. Let’s call it the I-factor, next to the three S-factors. The fact that there is always an intriguing next islet on the horizon—or just beyond, always inviting for more discovery and a sense of being disconnected from the busy mainland of home. As obvious as that Caribbean element might seem, it is a factor often overlooked by travel agent offerings, when Caribbean destinations are listed alongside places like Cancun (not an island). If sun, sea, and sand are all you seek, Miami Beach will do. As avid Caribbean travelers, the best way for us to combine all four features listed above is with a boat trip connecting these dots in one sweep. As boats make their way out to sea, vistas of the wider range of islands unfold and humble the destination you just disembarked from—no matter how large it may be. Sailing is our preferred way of doing this. Among others, a fantastic catamaran trip we took was one from Rodney Bay (St. Lucia) that takes you all the way to the Pitons (and helps you skip the horrible road in between in the process). It opened up views to the majestic Pitons, to otherwise inaccessible beaches like Anse Mamin, and, when it comes to the island factor, to the silhouettes of the next parts of the Caribbean archipelago visible on the horizon. Some other islands are not blessed with having the next island in sight. Jamaica comes to mind, or the ABC islands (very clear days being an exception, allegedly). Clearly, size matters when it comes to being able to see the next island—as does the altitude of hills and mountains. Taking all the above factors together, there is no place to do a sailing tour like the northeastern Caribbean—using St. Maarten / St. Martin as the recommended base of departure. Not just because it is the largest island in this subsection of the region and offers the most options, but also because it has—by far—the best I-factor. Why? Because it is the hub of an archipelago. On a recent trip with Private Yacht Charters, a Philipsburg-based company that serves tours to all surrounding islands, you see next-door neighbors Saba (commanding and mountainous) and Statia (a saddle-like combination of two volcanoes). In the background, the vast contours of St. Kitts and Nevis lay seemingly dormant under the clouds. Having traveled with Private Yacht Charters before, we know that if we had desired, we could have easily added Anguilla (gorgeous beaches, but as flat as a Caribbean island gets), St. Barths (with its odd series of rock islets in front), and the uninhabited Pinel and Tintamarre to this series of I-factors. Did I mention these islands together make up four different nations? An additional dimension to the island feel. For this PYC tour, however, we decided to stick to the queen of the ball, St. Maarten, and the four aforementioned islands in sight from the southern (“Dutch”) side of the island. And as much as this trip caters to that often-omitted fourth Caribbean dimension, don’t think sun, sea, and sand did not make up their fair share. Among others, gorgeous Long Bay, Mullet Bay Beach, and Cupecoy Beach for lunch were part of the essential three S’s. Though not essential for me, a fourth S—snorkeling—can be considered an additional factor. Service, in the case of PYC, makes for another S-factor. The team was impeccable throughout, with their snorkeling gear and the “Aqua Lily Pad” as great additions to the nautical fun. In advance, Chantal was a great help in advising us. For island buffs like ourselves, for whom the I-factor clearly is important, we learned that PYC also offers inter-island trips where lodging is provided on board these sweet little catamarans. Some nights of all-inclusive anchoring off paradise seems like a great addition to a hotel week. We are booking soon to widen horizons further—Tintamarre, Prickly Pear, and Dog Island are on our list for next year. Keep up the good work, PYC! You understand the I-factor like no other.

• A great day on Don't Worry

  Our experience with Don't Worry and Private Yacht Charters was excellent. The 45' Leopard Catamaran was absolutely gorgeous. It was in wonderful, like new condition with plenty of deck space, both covered and uncovered so sunlovers and shade lovers can both have nice spaces to hang out. Our captain, Victor, was super knowledgeable about sailing in general and the island. We felt very comfortable and safe with his sailing skills. Tess, our steward, took great care of us with delicious cocktails, snacks and made us sandwiches with supplies we brought along as we opted to eat on board rather than pull in to a restaurant. The boat is stocked with a splash pad, snorkel gear and even a warm shower sprayer to hose off after a swim. We were only 3 people but the boat accommodates alot more. We were very happy with our day on Don't Worry.

  

  

• Amazing family experience

  7 family members aged 11 to 80s and they all had a great time. The kids loved the lily pad. Cami and Victor were so nice and ensured that we had a good time. Lots of drinks for the kids and adults and fruit.

• 35th Birthday

  We booked for March 29th to April 2nd to celebrate my Besties 35th birthday. We had the privilege to have Captain Robbie and Tess as our stewardess. This was the best trip I've been on m!!! Robbie took care of all 6 of us and made us all feel safe as some of us didn't know how to swim since we sleep on the yacht. Tess cooked amazing meals breakfast lunch and dinner and catered to all of our needs! All I can say a time was had! I cannot thank Robbie and Tess enough for taking great care of us and provided the most amazing customer service! I will definitely be booking again in the future.

  What can I say - THIS WAS THE BEST PART OF OUR TRIP. Booking with Chantal was a breeze! She was extremely helpful, friendly and patient. We were a party of 14 sailing with Captain Robbie and Marion. If I could give more than 5 stars I would... We couldn't have asked for better service. We were on the boat, Don't Worry which was in mint condition, pretty much brand new. Very nice size to accommodate us all comfortably - for those that wanted sun or shade :) The food *********** excellent. I have to admit I was a bit scared about the food however we didn't have any complaints about anything! We had an option of just cruising around, snorkeling, jumping and swimming off the boat (which we did a lot of). As we visited beautiful beaches. My only complaint (which we were contemplating) was booking the catamaran for an additional day :) Awesome job - can't wait to go back and book again!

  Amazing crew and boat! Robbie and Tess were fantastic, we couldn’t have asked for better service. The boat, Don’t Worry, was in almost brand new condition. With a party of 13 we never felt cramped - plenty of room for everyone, in an or shade. Very comfortable. The trip was a great mix of cruising, snorkeling, swimming/jumping, and food and drinks. Highly recommend spending just a bit more for this experience. Also, Chantal was great to work with on scheduling, payment, and questions ahead of the trip.

  We booked a next day charter over the phone with Chantal. She was very friendly and helpful. The charter was fantastic. Captain Victor and Lucy were amazing. They were knowledgeable about the island, and extremely friendly towards our whole family. We’ve chartered in multiple places in the Caribbean, and this was the best experience we’ve ever had. The boat was Don’t Worry, which is a beautiful, new, Leopard 45. We would absolutely choose PYC again.

  What a perfect day! From the initial booking to the end of day pictures & hugs, PYC nailed it across the board. The communication with Chantal was excellent. The absolutely beautiful boat (Don’t Worry) was pristine. Captain Robbie and mate Marion gave flawless service throughout the day. Whether it was keeping us hydrated with our drinks, serving the delicious food (breakfast, charcuterie (s), and lunch), getting us hooked up with the water toys, and even letting us get a fish on, they did it all with genuine enthusiasm, joy and pleasure.   We set sail with Captain Charlie and First Mate Reiki. They were the best crew. We HIGHLY recommend this company and this boat. We snorkeled, did paddle boarding, conch shell hunting and fishing! Reiki kept the snacks and drinks coming. She played music that my son and daughter requested and took our pictures. Charle followed the kids around on the paddle boards and kept them safe. This was the last thing we did before flying home and was worth every penny. Thank you for the memories ❤️

  What an amazing day with Captain Robby and First Officer Cami. The trip started with a lovely and large spread of fruit and assorted sandwiches. Drinks (alcoholic and non) were plentiful the entire time and the boat itself was absolutely gorgeous and well appointed. You cannot go wrong booking this tour with this crew!
