If there is one place you absolutely must visit in Kinshasa, it’s this one of sure: Lola Ya Bonobo, the great sanctuary for Bonobos, a species of apes that, like the chimpanzees, is closely related to humans! Due to environmental pressures and poaching, the Bonobos are an endangered species - a situation that led to the creation of this wildlife reservation whose aim is to protect these friendly creatures.
The Bonobos, our closest living relatives, with more than 99% identical DNA, are protected in a special preserve outside Kinshasa. Lola ya Bonobo is the world’s only sanctuary for orphaned bonobos. This stunning and cute eco-tour provides a rich, educational experience. Bonobos are found only in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The experience left a lasting impact on us, as it was about conservation and education about the Bonobos and the vital work being done to protect them. Watching them interact and play was a heartwarming sight. Our guide answered all our questions with such detail, from the sanctuary's rescue efforts to what is done toward their protection.

This tour must not be missed when one is in Kinshasa. It was amazing to see this sanctuary for Bonobos, a species of apes closely related to humans. The tour guide ensured that the entire tour was eco-friendly and that is appreciated. This tour has been the most real life educative moment in my life and I highly recommend this tour.

The sanctuary is located in an area a few km from the metropolitan city of Kinshasa, surrounded by green hills and tropical vegetation with the river and local workers who extract sand from the river with their bare hands. The tour begins with a brief description of the bonobos, the fourth family of monkeys present in the world (the others are: chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans) which occupies a large area of Congo. We then visit the baby bonobos who are raised and cuddled by the guards and saved from poaching and the wars that still rage north-east of Congo. You are then accompanied on a circular tour of about 2 km where you see the adult bonobos in the wild interacting with visitors in a nice but… not very welcoming way 😄

Etienne, our English speaking guide, was excellent at translating the French for us and finding a shady place by the river to eat our bag lunch afterwards. I applaud everything Lola Ya Bonobo sanctuary is doing for the bonobos. Watching the bonobos come our of the forest when it was feeding time and eating the papayas was fun to watch. I enjoyed seeing the 3 different groups of bonobos in their different locations. With the scorching sun beating down on our heads, the longest flight of steps almost did in these two 79 year old women!
