Leave the port of Kardamena, pass through Giali Island and arrive in Nisyros after an hour cruise where a bus awaits your arrival to take you to the volcano crater.
Nisyros Volcano
The volcano on the island of Nisyros is the youngest one in Greece. It is an active volcano as are the ones at Methana, on Milos Island and on Santorini Island. Most of Nisyros is mountainous, volcanic and very fertile. The island is composed of volcanic rock formations that were formed by previous volcanic activity. The various rock formations (e.g. basalt) have been used as construction material in various buildings such as the Palaiokastro and the bell tower of the Church of Agios Ioannis Theologos located near Nikia. The island has been formed by lava. The rocks are covered by pyroclastic deposits and volcanic mud. Two possible eruptions occurred several millennia ago, estimated around 25,000 years back. The largest crater of the volcano, named Polivotis, has a diameter of 260m and 30m depth. There are another 5 younger craters in the region, the largest of which is Stefanos with a diameter of 30m and a 30m depth. The valley that surrounds the volcano is 2,400m long and 950m wide.

5.00A great day out to see the volcano & experience some of this diverse island. I rented a scooter & explored quite a bit including the Paleokastro, Monastery & the smaller villages which were really welcoming & friendly.

3.00There was no information about the guide and the language. We booked a pick-up from the hotel and got a confirmation, but later we got a direction to arrive at the main road. The driver was very unpleasant, we arrived at 7:55, but he looked at his watch and showed dissatisfaction. Also, the problem is that he does not speak English.

5.00Everything was fantastic from beginningvtill the end. Guide lead us from the bus till the boat,had free time to eat in local restaurant,visit local shops ,to see vulcano. Was not so hot there,just whe wr sow vulcano,there a bit smelly and hot. All trip was fantastic.

5.00The trip was excellent. Our English-speaking guide, Marta, took great care of us. We really enjoyed the visit to the volcanic crater and the walk through the town. The boat cruise was a lovely experience. Everything went exactly as we had hoped. The price was very reasonable. We highly recommend it.

4.00Very well organized. Great leadership of Katarina. Really only small shortcoming: if the windows of the bus were not so smeared, you could have taken even better photos while driving. But otherwise really great!
