Eyre Square, in the heart of Galway City, is officially known as the John F. Kennedy Memorial Park. The square has a rich history dating back to medieval times when markets took place on the green in front of the town gates. A memorial of the US President Kennedy, who was made a Freeman of the city, marks the spot where he made a speech to approximately 100,000 Galway people in 1963, on his last trip before his assassination.
Lynch's Castle
Lynch’s Castle, it is a striking example of a medieval fortified house. The castle is four storeys high with embellished carved windows, gargoyles and ornamental mouldings and cornices. Built by the powerful Lynch family as a protection from raids, parts of the limestone building may date back to the 14th century but the bulk of it was built in the 16th century. The Lynches, of Anglo-Norman descent, were one of the powerful 14 tribes who ruled Galway.

5.00If you want to truly understand Galway, book a tour with Arthur McGuire! From the start, it was clear how much he cares about the city and how deeply he knows it. He was flexible with our group and generous with his time, making sure we got the most out of the experience. What really made the tour stand out was how personal it felt. Arthur didn’t just share history — he shared his own experiences and perspective on how Galway has evolved, which brought everything to life. Walking around with him honestly felt like being with the mayor, with people stopping to say hello along the way. Our college-age kids really enjoyed it as well, and they kept bringing up things Arthur told us throughout the rest of our trip. We’ve been to Galway a few times before, but this experience gave us a completely new appreciation for the city. Arthur is a great ambassador for Galway, and we’d highly recommend his tour.

5.00We had a great tour with Arthur McGuire of Galway. His passion for the city and region is contagious and he clearly knows the city inside and out. He was incredibly flexible and even spent extra time with us answering questions and sharing stories. Walking around town with him felt like touring with the mayor — so many people stopped to say hello along the way! What really stood out was that Arthur didn’t just share historical facts, he shared his own experiences of the city and how it has evolved over the years. Our college-age kids really enjoyed the tour too, (referencing things Arthur told us throughout the rest of our trip). The whole experience felt authentic, he clearly is a tour guide for all of the right reasons. We’ve visited Galway several times before, but after spending a few hours walking the city with Arthur we’ll see it very differently going forward. He’s a fantastic ambassador for Galway. I highly recommend this tour it's a great way to spend time in Galway.

5.00Look up! Arthur provided a friendly, funny, detail-rich, and extremely knowledgeable walking tour of Galway. Arthur met us at our hotel and provided a brief introduction ahead of our 2.5 hour walk around Galway. I appreciate that Arthur continually reminded us to “look up!” at the historic buildings to spot intricacies like family crests and medieval windows and pointed out little details about Galway history that would otherwise be overlooked. We finished the tour with a much greater appreciation for the city and its history. Would highly recommend Arthur’s tour to others.

5.00Learned alot about the historical sites and the Clauddaugh ring! The wall in the mall was amazing. We visited one of the recommended pubs for traditional Tradd music.

5.00My son and I absolutely loved our Galway Private walking tour! Arthur was a fantastic guide. He was so personable and friendly. His knowledge of Galway and the history was amazing. My son loves the mid-evil timeframe and this tour provided great details on it in Galway - thanks to Arthur. He is a GEM!!!
