It was built in 1521, destroyed by a storm, and later rebuilt in 1529. The Church was named a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI on January 25, 1978, at the request of Cardinal Luis Aponte Martínez, Archbishop of San Juan. It contains the remains of the explorer and conquistador Juan Ponce de León, as well as the martyr San Pío. 1.00It rained when we first arrived to meet tour guide. No one showed or replied to my text to see if it canceled. We toured old San Juan on our own. I will expect a total refund.
