Keldur
A guided tour inside Keldur one of the largest preserved turf farms in south Iceland. The wooden frame of the hut is characteristic of Roman style. From the hut there is an underground tunnel thought to date from the 12th or 13th century. These structures of turf houses blend seamlessly into the natural landscape.

5.00Enchanting place, once you arrive the guide (who lives there all summer) welcomes visitors by offering a tour of the peat houses or letting you wander around the outside for free. We chose to do the internal tour (about 30 minutes) and our guide was exceptional, explaining well both the history of the house and life in Iceland at that time. Overall also a small church and a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. To get there there is a dirt road that requires caution (especially the stretch south of Keldur) but can be traveled by any vehicle (even campers).

5.00This is slightly off the beaten path but well worth the effort. One of my favorite stops in Iceland! The history of the farm is incredible - dating back to the 10th century with etched dates in the turf house as far back as 1641. The house tour is fantastic - small groups make is personal and leisurely. Our tour guide was a college intern there for the summer who was wonderful! Highly recommend spending an hour or so here getting lost in time here…
