This was an incredible experience that's been on my bucket list for over 20 years. Being that close to a beautiful but mysterious animal was beyond words. But, Since the tour operators can't control the animals I will talk about what they can control, and they make it a wonderful trip from the beginning. I booked with transportation from Cape Town. I was notified of my pickup time early enough to plan my day before, to ensure I was prepared and rested. I was picked up right on time. The drive was pleasant and smooth. Great driver and the 2 hours passed quickly. Once I arrived there was good, coffee, and several people greeting each person and ensuring we had what we needed. During the tour, safety instructions were clear and although it's serious business, it was fun to be on the boat and hear about the sharks we might see while being informed on how to keep us and them safe. Once in the cage, it was just incredible and the guides made sure to let us know where to look at all times to see as much as possible. Back at the office, hot showers and soup were served immediately and we had time to decompress and warm up before reliving the whole experience on the tv. I have no notes on improving because I never felt anything other than comfortable and prepared. And, although my nerves didn't get to me, I saw the patience and encouragement to those who needed some extra courage. At the end of the day, everyone was smiling! Something I'll never forget in the best way! Thank you for making this experience come true for me.

It was fantastic from start to finish. I stayed in Gansbaai so drove 15 mins to the HQ. The staff are all very friendly and knowledgeable - so felt safe from the outset. The sharks were plentiful and also beautiful. Recommend to anyone considering it - you won’t regret it!

Best customer service I’ve encountered. Communication was excellent regarding the pickup. When we got there breakfast was ready for us. Very informative and knowledgeable. Shark cage dive was fab and we purchased the video. Afterwards hot showers were available and lunch was ready and very tasty. Could not find any negatives whatsoever. Great team.

My husband and I did a dive with White Shark Projects on a recent trip to SA and had a very positive experience with the staff in general, and overall I would recommend going with WSP if someone is considering doing a dive - they seem like a great group with an amazing mission of helping the sharks. However there are a handful of things I’d flag - on one side, general improvements for WSP and on the other side, to help someone figure out if this is an experience that is right for them if they are on the fence. Disclaimer: My husband LOVED this experience and would absolutely do it again, whereas I did not feel like this is the “thing” for me, even though it’s something I’ve genuinely wanted to do my whole life. That’s not to say I don’t think it’s good or worth doing, I just don’t think it’s a good idea for everyone. I was not particularly nervous or scared about the sharks, I just found it to be a very difficult experience physically (as a healthy 33 y/o) who typically has no problem with more intense experiences/activities. Additionally - I DID use Dramamine as recommended and did not find it helpful like I usually do. If it had worked it might be another story, but unfortunately you don’t know for sure until you’re out there. The good: - Clean facilities - Nice staff (on the boat they were extremely kind going out of their way to make me feel less seasick, and you can also tell they really care about what they do) - Great mission as a business/organization - The instructions were very clear on the boat and anything related to the diving itself - Fortunately, the boat ride was only about 15 minutes each way, so we weren’t too far off shore. The not so good (I’m reluctant to say “bad”): - Communication in general was not the strongest. They have a lot of info on their website, so going into the experience having access to that generally made me feel more reassured, however there are a few areas I think could be improved: - As of the time I’m writing this on December 9th 2025, the FAQ section of the site doesn’t seem to be live so I can’t cite my specific concerns, but when it was available before, the information seemed to be a mix of info for either people doing the dive and/or volunteers, it was hard to tell what was what. I hope since the FAQ is down that they’re clarifying this, but this is an area that contributed to some confusion as part of our experience. - We reached out via email to inquire about booking and transportation specifically because we were staying at a hotel about halfway between WSP and Hermanus. Monique was very responsive and suggested we go through our hotel for transport (we named the specific hotel) as she said they’d be familiar with timing/flexibility. When she reached out the day before the dive to confirm payment we also discussed transportation again where I described how we would be open to getting picked up from our hotel but also wanted to go to Hermanus to sightsee afterwards. We inquired about transportation one way because we thought it would be possible to call an uber or taxi from the WSP building - no one told us otherwise. Monique arranged transport for us one way which was great, however she also knew we wanted to go to Hermanus after and did not flag with us that there are no Ubers out there and getting a taxi would be difficult - something that would have been great to know and frankly I would have expected someone coordinating something like this (for tourists who are clearly not from the area) to have flagged. When we got there we basically found out that no we can’t call an uber and there aren’t really any taxis. We ended up being extremely fortunate in that there was another nice couple who was headed back to CPT so Monique helped us connect with them for a ride, but if they hadn’t had 2 open seats frankly I don’t know what we would have done. We also got sort of shafted on the price, it was like $50USD to get to Hermanus which is double what we would have been charged if we had booked RT door to door to Hermanus, (we also paid for pickup from the hotel) and I think she should have let us know this was an option when we described what we were trying to do initially. It all worked out, but it was unnecessarily stressful/poor communication. It would probably be good to clearly communicate on the website that other transportation options are extremely limited in the area so you better have something set up beforehand. - We arrived at around 7am (and again this is the time their driver dropped us off) and it was quite clear most people had been there for some time as most people were done with their breakfasts and there was not much food left at all. I wasn’t expecting a huge breakfast but TBH I would probably recommend eating before you go or on the way because it seemed rather light, especially if other people have gotten their first. - Similarly, I would not count too much on lunch after. The grilled cheese is nice, but the soup didn’t really taste like anything (again not expecting a whole lot here) but it does satisfy something hot to slurp down when you’re done. I will say with the food, they don’t have to include anything at all since obviously you’re not there for that, you’re there for the sharks, however I would just say manage expectations about it if you’re not planning on eating anything else. Things to know/be aware of: - The boat is VERY crowded. There is not a lot of space on there, in particular when the boat is in motion. I felt a little claustrophobic and that’s not anybody’s fault but just something to be aware of, and also leads me to me next point… - You get changed into your (dry) wetsuit on the boat. I am sure they have a reason they don’t do this, but personally I think it would be MUCH better if they had everyone change at the building (or at least the first group) as opposed to on the boat. I was in the first group and it was very stressful to try and get into the wetsuit. Wetsuits are hard to get into no matter what, but on a rocking boat it is even harder so if at all possible I would think it would be easier on everybody to get changed on shore. - The back of the boat effectively goes down into the water when they are taking off, so do NOT wear shoes you care about - definitely sandals with straps or water shoes because they will probably get wet. My husband had sneakers on and had to lift his feet up to make sure they didn’t get soaked because we were at the back of the boat. - I did not really know what to expect with the “chum” smell, but between that and the gasoline smell at the back of boat, it is not good. If you are sensitive to smells this is something to be aware of. - On the website it says you will have an opportunity to dive twice, which is misleading. While I wouldn’t have done this anyway, it wasn’t the case for our group, only one dive per group. This can be for a variety of reasons including the sharks not being around as much but just know you’re not guaranteed a second dive. - I didn’t know what to expect with the chumming but basically they are throwing a line over you with some fish flesh dangling off it for the duration of your dive. This is obviously how it’s done but I was very focused on trying not to get any splash of chum water into my mouth and obviously it still doesn’t smell great. - It is COLD in the water. Most people can probably deal with this but even with the wetsuit (in combo with seasickness) to be too much. Dress warmly and if you’re super sensitive to cold this might not be the experience for you. Overall, I think White Shark Projects has an AMAZING mission and I appreciate them and what they do for the sharks. I also appreciate the crew the day we were there doing everything they could to make me comfortable when I was sick. In general I think some communication areas can be improved but overall they’re doing a good job. I hope this review helps people on the fence get a clearer picture of the experience to decide if it is right for them.

Prior to the day the team kept in contact we us so we knew pick up times etc which was really reassuring. On arrival we were treated by the friendly team and had breakfast and the safety brief. We were thankfully also provided with waterproof and windproof jackets. Needed as the journey back to port was windy. The conservationist was really knowledgeable and the crew great and worked hard. Throughout the whole dive they managed to keep 3-4 sharks interested so everyone managed to see plenty of them right in front of the cage. No Great whites but as the conservationist explained the Orcas have reduced their numbers. Then back for a tasty hot lunch

From start to finish, our family's shark cage diving experience with White Shark Projects was nothing short of phenomenal. They truly deserve every one of these five stars! The entire team—from the moment we booked to our return to shore—was outstanding. The crew on the boat was not only professional and highly knowledgeable but also genuinely enthusiastic, which made the atmosphere exciting and fun. We were especially impressed by the focus on safety. The briefing was thorough and clear, and we felt completely secure in the cage at all times. They handled all the logistics smoothly and efficiently, ensuring everyone had an equal opportunity to view the magnificent sharks. And the main event? Simply breathtaking! We were lucky enough to have multiple passes by a few incredible sharks. Being face-to-face with these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is a powerful and humbling experience. The water visibility was great, and the time we spent in the cage was the perfect amount to soak it all in. A special shout-out to the staff for making my husband's 50th birthday unforgettable. The delicious food and drinks and the crew for their efforts to keep the sharks close to the cage! This adventure was a huge hit with our whole family. It was an educational and exciting experience we will be talking about for years. If you are debating which company to choose for your shark cage dive in Gansbaai, look no further than White Shark Projects. Thank you, White Shark Projects, for an unforgettable day!
