Famous for its centuries-old forging tradition, Da Sy was once known for supplying weaponry during Vietnam’s historical wars. In this interactive workshop, you’ll immerse yourself in the knife-making process, step by step: - Design: Begin by sketching your blade on a carefully selected piece of durable metal, chosen for its strength and quality. - Forging: Cut out the blade and tang (the part that fits into the handle) using traditional tools like hammers, cutters, and an anvil. Heat them in the fiery forge to prepare for shaping. - Shaping: Work side-by-side with artisans, taking turns hammering the metal into the desired shape. A hydraulic machine will help refine any rough edges for a smooth finish. - Sharpening: Finally, sharpen the blade on a grindstone. This process includes several steps, one involving a unique tar-based wash—an age-old family secret passed down through generations! Throughout the experience, our skilled artisan will guide you, ensuring every detail of your work reflects your personal touch. You’ll bring home not just a beautifully crafted knife but also a part of yourself in its creation—a piece you can use to create delicious meals and lasting memories.
All tools are provided at the artisan's house, along with all necessary safety equipment for knife making.

My experience at the knives workshop was just amazing! The couple that own the shop was super sweet, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. They didn’t speak English, but their (grown up) nephew helped, translated everything and took a lot of pictures for me. He was also super kind and funny and knew so much about the history of the area. I could choose and individualize my knive and they gave me good advice! We made everything from scratch and I was participating in each step. In the end they even gave me a certificate which was super cute. And asked me if I made it back well to my accommodation. So all in all they were very caring. I use the knife often now that I’m back home. It’s fantastic! Everyone I showed it so far was super impressed! So if you are thinking about doing this workshop, you definitely should! Thank you so much and all the best for you! Birte

10/10 experience, I went with my partner and it was the highlight of Hanoi for us. We actually arrived late and Daisy was waiting for us with such enthusiasm and hospitality, she was so great at her job and was able to translate and describe all of the steps and history despite only working there for two weeks!! They went above and beyond for us, and it was amazing to work with two of the only 13 artisans in this 600 year old blacksmithing village. A must do.

The best experience we've had in Vietnam! Tuyen was awe inspiring to watch with her immense skill and novel approach to her craft. We gained a true insight into the life of a blacksmith family living here and I will remember it for the years to come. Our interpreter Mint was charming, personable and made the whole process smooth for us to understand.

This has been my favourite experience in Vietnam - possibly on any holiday. The skill of our kind blacksmith lady Tuyen was just left me in awe as I watched her help me make the knife. Our interpreter Mint was personable, charming and helped us to understand the whole process better. We got a true view of life for a local blacksmith family here and it will be a memory to look back on in the years to come!

This workshop was one of the highlights of our stay in Hanoi we are so glad we did it. The skills of the artisan knife maker, Tuyen and her husband were amazing. Each step of the process was explained and we were supported through the whole process from designing, to final polishing of our own individual knives. This insight into a local craft and being welcomed so warmly into the craftsmans home is a memory we will cherish. Thankyou, Stuart.

What an amazing last minute booking! From first booking right to seeing us safe to transport, the team was forever friendly and accommodating. Very helpful and patient with other languages in translating and questions. Chiến is in no doubt a generational master of the craft and is more than willing to share his wisdom/experience (and let you make your own mistakes along the way). But not to worry, he'll kindly guide you back with your progress to have a unique item of your own. Mint was an exceptional guide, giving you plenty of local & historical knowledge. Translation and setting the vibe for the whole experience is a tough job, she navigates this while managing a group of strangers! What a legend! I would highly recommend booking this experience, you'll have yourself something to take back that you can proudly say you made from start to finish. I know it'll be my favourite souvenir to use at home, not only for its quality but for the memories made while crafting it here.

We forged 2 knives. The Instructor gave clear instructions and everything was very understandable. Her English was the clearest i‘he heard in Vietnam and the Store is located at a rather unknown Part of Hanoi (which is refreshing from all the tourists traps). We‘ve had lots of fun forging with the locals Chién and Mint. We were greeted with treats and tea and lots of love. If you consider a little workshop and a nice souvenir, this is your Sign!

What an incredible and unique adventure! I recently joined a traditional knife making class in Da Sy village on the outskirts of Hanoi, and it was hands-down one of the most fun and rewarding experiences during my trip to Vietnam. My translator and guide, Daisy, was absolutely fantastic - friendly, knowledgeable, and great at explaining every step in English while bridging the language gap with the local artisans. Also sharing some great local food spots to check out. She made the whole journey from Hanoi smooth and engaging. The highlight was working under the expert guidance of the professional teacher, Ms. Tuyen, a true master blacksmith with 40 years of experience under her belt. Shes a true master! I chose to make a practical cooking knife, and seeing it come to life from raw metal was thrilling. The best part? I walked away with my very own hand-forged knife - a unique souvenir I'll use for years. A perfect mix of cultural immersion, hands-on crafting, and excitement. If you're in Hanoi and want something off the beaten path, book this class! You won't regret it.
