El Yunque National Forest
Get adventurous, get muddy and get off the paved trail! Hike to explore different zones of the rain forest and enjoy beautiful views, natural pools and the Atlantic Ocean. Once we arrive to the skirts of El Yunque we will start with a 25-30 minute journey on a river-wading and rock scaling path to the river. You will see bamboo trees, flowers, and beautiful plants and experience rivers, waterfalls, and natural trails. We will make a stop to visit a collecting pool that forms at the base of a small waterfall. Here you will have the opportunity to swim in its crystal clear waters, swing from a rope and enjoy the different tones of its deep pools. Then, after a few minutes of hiking and rock climbing to the upper sections (more strenuous), arrive at a natural river where you can swim, cliff jump, enjoy the natural water slides and small waterfalls. After the hike, we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant (food cost not included) for about an hour to an hour and half.
Laguna Grande
We will then proceed heading East to join on the guided nighttime bioluminescent bay kayak tour. Experience the mystical mangrove channels leading to Laguna Grande. Look into the water to see the glowing pyrodinium bahamense, microscopic planktons capable of producing natural light at the touch of your hand or paddle (like fireflies). Admire these amazing organisms up close as you paddle on a 2-person kayak through the mangroves for an estimate of 30-minutes, and learn from your eco-tour guide about this fragile and unique ecosystem. Once reached the lagoon, you will have some time to play with the water (from within the kayak) and receive more information, before we head back to the mangrove channels for another kayaking journey of approximately 30 minutes . Enjoy provided snacks at the end of the kayak tour, before returning to San Juan. Please note: The bio bay is an unpredictable natural phenomenon that may be influenced by multiple factors. Bioluminoscity level can vary from very visible to minimum or none without any previous notice. Full Moon phase may also affect the visibility of the bioluminescence. The excursion to the Anvil with Georgie and Luis was the best! Both are excellent! Georgie is a magnificent guide, both in Spanish and English, always worried that we understood everything, and always with a smile. Give it a 10!! The second part of the kayaking trip in bio bay I liked less. I found the group too large and it was often uncomfortable to circulate with kayaks. We saw the phenomenon of bioluminescence and I was disappointed, it only looked a little bit when you moved the water, I guess I expected something else.

This is a very intensive activity and a very long day. Jason Bonon was our rainforest guide. He did a great job all the way around. In the hike to the falls, he stopped to explain the vegetation. This was really to stop and let us catch our breath. Louise was our driver who also our second guide. He was very helpful in assisting how to climb rocks or when to step/grab, as needed. This rainforest tour was very intense and not for the faint of heart. The tour entailed climbing rocks at high heights - put your left foot in this rock hole and right one in this hole then swing hand over to grab a rock crevice. The waterfalls were beautiful and the natural slide very beautiful and fun. Second part of the trip was a let down. We were very tired from the first trip so rowing for the second trip was very tiring. We paddled about an hour in the dark through mangroves. The bio luminescence could be seen was more akin to seeing flakes in the water. This trip was a little disappointing. We were sore for days after this double trip!

Great experience! Booked this excursion because it offered pickup and drop off off near our Air BnB. Uber would’ve cost us more from San Juan to Fajardo for just 2 ppl. If ur a group of 4+ then just book these excursions separately or enjoy a full day at El Yunque and then an evening doing the kayak tour. The best part of the El Yunque Rainforest is the cliff jumping, rope swing and water slide. Mind you, if the current is strong, these activities may be delayed or shortened. The hike was fine - even my 65-year-old mom with RA could do it but it was a challenge. Rocky, uneven, uphill/downhill paths, slippery at times, etc. If you’ve hiked up a waterfall before then it’s a similar experience. Best part was the bioluminescent bay in Fajardo. It was just so magical. You could actually start seeing them while still kayaking in the mangrove. It’s not a glowing blue like some videos/photos you see online. They are like tiny fireflies in the water. They just glow a white/golden colour in the water - while you paddle, if you splash in the water with your hand/feet, etc. We travelled end of October so perhaps that made a difference. Be prepared to bring your phone pouch with a lanyard or your insta360/gopro attached to yourself as it will be completely dark while you kayak through the mangrove. Highly recommended combining both activities. For convenience. The lunch stop made very tasty mussels (a bit salty) and chuletas fritas (fried pork chops) dishes! I find most dishes in Puerto Rico to be on the salty side but maybe that’s just how they like their dishes. If you do this excursion on a Sunday, be prepared for super LOUD motorcycle and cars passing by the restaurant, Asador Boricua. Overall, it was super worth it and highly recommended!

Our tour was fantastic. It is physical. You will get wet. The correct shoe is important. Jayson was terrific with Bespoke.

The El Yunque part was great! I wish this was the only part we did. The tour guide communicated well with me before and during. And he was so descriptive, kind and knowledgeable. I would definitely do this part of the tour again. The second part of the tour was a waste of time. Now I know that if a company gives out free Mosquito repellant to put on, run! All I got from this tour was about 30 mosquito bites. They knew they had not seen the lights in the bay for at least 3 days but they didn't tell us. So we didn't see anything without the tarps over our heads. They assumed since we were a group of 22 that we were fine with double kayaks, but my family were a party of 3 and there was another party of 5 so we wanted single kayaks. They said "discuss it and let us know what you want". We told them we want single kayaks, then they said, well we don't have them, well why even give us this option. And from the get go, the transportation picking us up after El Yunque was almost an hour late. In all fairness, I believe 3 different companies were used and I don't know the names of the companies. But the only one that was worth it was the company that took us on the tour to El Yunque. The company that did the Kayak tour was horrible, and the company that transported us after El Yunque, although he was kind, never apologized or explained why he was almost an hour late.

Definitely worth it. Hike isn’t bad just a bit difficult to climb at times but the climb leads to a very fun water slide and cliff jumping. Tour guide definitely added to the experience. Kayaking was a bit of a struggle at night but if you have a coordinated partner with you it’s fun too.

It can be very slippery so watch your steps. The guides were wonderful, and watchful for the group. We had 11 family members from 9 to 68 in ages.

Amazing experience with Jason. Got amazing photos/videos and he encouraged me to do things I’ve never done like cliff jumping and water slides all while ensuring I was comfortable and safe. He explained all the flora and fauna on the way and always had a smile and high energy. 10/10 recommend to anyone! The bio tour was also amazing.

I will try to answer all the questions I had about this before going! Overall, we had an amazing time on the rainforest tour and bioluminescent bay kayaking tour. It ended up being the highlight of our trip. The reason this review is 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the lack of information available beforehand, which can leave you feeling unprepared. The only reason we ended up being adequately prepared is because we did a deep dive of the reviews, both good and bad, and erred on the side of caution with all of the things we brought with us for the day. El Yunque Rainforest Tour I think our tour guide tried to pick us up at our room of the hotel, but we were waiting in the lobby so he ended up calling us to let us know he was there. On this tour, the hike is at max, 1 mile total (out and back). Yes there is mud, and depending on how rainy it is, it could be a lot or just a thin layer. If you want to participate in any of the water activities (water slide, cliff jump, rope swing), you will need to walk through water up to your waist. That means your shoes are fully submerged and your clothes will get wet, and stay that way for the rest of the time there. Biggest recommendation is to complete the tour and hike in water shoes, and bring an extra pair of shoes to change into afterwards. You will do some "rock climbing", but the tour guides will show you where to place your feet and help you up when needed. You leave all your belongings on the bus, so really no need to travel as light as possible as advised. Bring at least 1 change of clothes and a towel as there will be an opportunity to change at lunch. You will sit on the bus back wet, but it is only about a 20 minute drive to the lunch kiosks. If you're looking for a true tour of the rainforest with lots of flora and fauna, this is not it. This tour you see a small trail and they point out a few things, but it is definitely aimed at people looking for "experiences" and not necessarily nature. Lunch You will be dropped at a lunch spot that has approximately 60 food kiosks. Majority are restaurants where you can sit inside and have a bathroom to change your clothes. The restaurant your tour guide will recommend had some of the best food we had during our entire stay. There are also drink booths, ice cream, and a beach to walk along behind the kiosks. A different bus will pick you up from lunch, so don't worry about sitting on a wet seat from the morning tour. Bioluminescent Kayaking There is a bathroom when you arrive so you can change if necessary. Once again, you'll be able to leave all of your belongings on the bus. Your guides will start the tour orientation relatively quickly after getting everyone signed in. You will enter the kayaks from inside the water, so you walk out about waist high again. Depending on how tall you are your clothes may get wet, but your shoes will be submerged. Put your water shoes from the morning back on! If you have any experience kayaking, try to be in the front of the line or you will get stuck behind people figuring it out for the first time. Once at the lagoon, your tour guides will look for a good spot to see the algae glow. You may not be able to see it as much as social media would have you believe, and depending on how dark it is you will likely need to use the tarp provided by your tour guides to see much. Really tuck the tarp around yourself and block out the light for the best views! The day definitely took a good 12 hours. As long as you are prepared, it is an excellent value for the money. Bring a change of shoes for the best experience :)

Be prepared to SWEAT – but in the best way possible! Our El Yunque and Bio Bay Kayak Tour was an unforgettable day packed with nature, adrenaline, and awe-inspiring sights. We were lucky to have Jason and Felix guide us through the El Yunque portion – they were a fantastic, energetic, and super engaging team who made the whole experience both fun and informative. From rock climbing and a natural water slide to cliff jumping and a rope swing, the day was full of thrilling options – but don’t worry if you’re not up for all of it. Jason and Felix were incredibly accommodating and made sure everyone felt comfortable and included, no matter their fitness level. Now for the Bio Bay Kayak Tour – a magical but slightly challenging experience. The group is guided together regardless of experience level, so PACK YOUR PATIENCE and be prepared for a little chaos on the water. You may find yourself bumping into trees or other kayaks along the narrow mangrove channels – it's all part of the adventure! Glow sticks are provided on each kayak for visibility, but it gets VERY DARK and navigating can be tricky. If you can, bring a headlamp to help guide your way. Despite the bumps and turns, once you reach the glowing bay, it’s absolutely worth it. Highly recommend this tour for anyone seeking adventure, natural beauty, and a little bit of magic under the stars.
