• The best Volcano hiking tour ever !

  We were picked up with ease at the cruise port. Easy instructions/meeting location. We jumped on the open air bus and were given a great driving tour on our way to our hike (about 40 min drive) with lots of info taught to us about the area. There were only 6 of us and we were lucky to have Jaleel as our guide. My wife and I (52 years of age) are avid long distance trail runners so although we had read this was a very difficult hike, we were excited to see how fast we could get to the top and back down of course. We wore aggressive running trail shoes (saucony peregrine's) and brought about 1.5L of Water in our packs. We took some carbloading gels we use for running (2 was enough). Another couple with us (late 30's) were seasoned mountain hikers and they were up and down step for step with us. The third couple was a little older(mid/late 60's) but very fit for their age and also did great ! They were always behind once we reached the steeper portion but we always waited with short breaks for them to catch up. As we climbed the beautiful trails, Jaleel would take the proper short breaks and give us some great lessons on the rain forrest. It was truly a magical hike for us, we had done nothing like it ever. We were provided with some fresh raisin bread and homeade fruit punch (ice cold) that Jaleel had carried with him and gave us with about 1km to go to the top (the hardest km). It was the perfect fuel/hydration/sugar everyone need to finish the steep climb ! It was a pleasure getting to know Jaleel and about his family, talking all the way up and down. The group would ask questions from time to time about the area but I was more interested in Jaleel the person and glad to have met him. Travelling for me is all about the people first and the experience second and I was extremely happy with both. We reached the top of the hike in about 3.5km's with 1000m of elevation. To give most people an idea of the elevation, a typical 50KM UltraTrailMarathon would have about 1200m of elevation in Ontario Canada (Jaleel had said it was about 3 miles up but our Corus watches said less, may have been a dead zone on our satellite connection, not sure so expect it could be about 8km's round trip, we got 7 on our watches) It was a steady climb for about the first 1km and then the last 2.5km's were very technical , very steep, root climbing , rock climbing and at times you had to use upper body strength to pull yourself up (only a handful of times) but I would say if you are fit you can do this hike no problem. If you are of average fitness level, you will find it very hard but still will have no issues and if you are not fit, do not do this hike. You won't make it. We had excellent conditions with the trail being mostly dry but this is the rainforest and most of the time it would be a lot muddier making it even harder. Jaleel told us that sometimes it can take 6-9 hours up/down but we did it in 3 hours and 56 minutes (add about 30 mins on top in breaks) and he said he thinks it was the fastest he has ever done it ! My wife and I were very proud of that and when we come back next year, we hope to do it even faster ! I told him I wanted to run the first km up but he said no don't you won't have the energy for the steeper portion and he was right, it would have been hard ! I did get to run some of the downhill as I would let the group hike ahead of me and then let the legs fly ! It was so much fun as the last KM down is runable and I love jumping over low branches/rocks etc. The tour will cater to your fitness level but take this hike serious and wear the right shoes and bring lots of fluids/snacks with you. One water bottle is NOT ENOUGH ! I would also suggest wearing some sort of gloves like garden gloves or climbing gloves as your hands do have to grab and pull on muddy/wet rocks and tree roots. You will thank me for this tip and for heaven's sake DONT WEAR SANDLES OR FLIP FLOPS ! Yes we saw a female in her 20's in another group going up and we were heading down in flip /flops and I laughed out loud. No chance she makes it and even worse will probably get hurt. Regular running shoes are really not proper for this hike unless you get great condtions like we did but my trail shoes were great for the steeper / muddier/ rockier portions for sure ! There is an element of danger and Jaleel did have some stories of how lots of people don't listen to him. Please listen ! These guides are there to protect you ! My last comment would be our guide Jaleel, mannnnnnn, he kept a steady pace up and down in those damn rubber boots and never was out of breath and rarely used his hands/arms in the more difficult climbs/decents. He is a machine lol. He also said he rarely sweats but I did notice him sweating with our fast pace up ! I hope we pushed him a little because that man can fly up that Volcano ! We can't wait to see all of you again next January and for us to break our record time of 3 hours and 56 minutes !

  These guys are great a professional. The owner was willing to only take me (1 person) on the tour because the other 3 did not give him the correct time for their arrival time. They were late an he told my tour guide 3 more minutes a take him only if they don’t show up. I thought that was great not many companies will do that a will normally cancel. They also worked with me via email very responsive. Tour guide was great I just had to remind him I needed to be back at the ship before the others (as they were later docking them me) so he made sure to get me back on time an avoid any extra shopping stops. I will definitely use them again. I m sorry I did not post this when I first did the tour but their actions still are with me a year later that I was willing to give this great comment about them.

  This hike was beautiful and Adrian was a wonderful guide. I feel compelled to add a couple of caveats though. If you have any mobility issues, just don't go. Although it is described as four miles, and that might be correct as the crow flies, you will be on foot. One of the folks on our tour clocked it at 8 miles. I clocked it at 6.5. Bring lots of water and a snack. Again, it was a gorgeous hike but it was for this fit 63 year old, a hard one.

  This hike is not for beginners. It was very challenging, took 2.5 hours up and about 2 hours down. The view was beautiful. The trip was made bearable because we had an amazing guide. Adrian was awesome. Very informative and allowed ample time for breaks. He was educating us on the hike and was quite funny. He made the hike 10/10!

  Very, very sporty. It goes up high. You have to climb up roots, big steps are necessary. We had good weather, but it would be (even) more dangerous in the rain. Our guide took regular breaks on the way up, but he showed very little consideration for the way down. There is only a small spot at the top where you can take photos, no platform or anything like that. I probably wouldn't do it again if I was >50

• Great Hike but Safety and First Aid a real let down

  We did the mount liamuiga hike. We really enjoyed the hike. It was definitely strenuous involving scrambling over rocks and having to lift yourself on ropes in places. Our guides were fun and informative and set a brisk pace which was well suited to our group. However, shortly after leaving the car park for the return journey our bus crashed. Several people were injured including myself; I sustained a significant laceration down to the bone on my forehead requiring 13 sutures as well as other injuries. Whilst we appreciate that accidents can happen the care we received in the aftermath of this was concerning. No member of staff came to ask how we were and no first aid was offered. I do not think the truck had a first aid kit; none was bought out and I had to use my wife’s shirt to apply pressure to my wound. Once a replacement vehicle was found nobody from the tour company came over to see how we were, discuss next steps or offer any form of debrief / explanation for what happened. The volcano hike is fantastic and worth doing but I think this response to an injury on their watch would make me wary of participating in a potentially dangerous activity such as this hike with this company again.

  The description of this excursion is deceptive; it was an extremely difficult hike. Quite a few people turned around, and the one guide joked that we made it further than a lot of people, an indication that a lot of people don't make it. So don't go unless you are experienced in steep rocky climbing. The guide was in a hurry and had no patience with anyone who lagged behind at all. There were no fresh fruits offered, as stated in the description, and the fresh juice was very sugary instant lemonade. One very experienced hiker in our group who did make it to the summit also felt that the description of difficulty was vastly understated. Save your money, and, and skip this one unless you are in fantastic condition (and don't want the "fresh fruit" !)

  Fantastic hike! We went as a family of 5, with kids ages 11, 14 and 15 and we all enjoyed it! The hike is not hard and it has amazing views of the rainforest and volcano crater at the top. It took us about 3.5 hrs to hike up and down. Our guide, Adrian, was great! Super friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and great company. He was very professional. Our only guide of the entire trip to actually arrive on time! The home made raisin bread and ginger juice was delicious! The mountain is very clean which was very nice. It is not a hard hike, but you need full mobility and NO knee issues. Some areas of the hike are technical and need good mobility. We got rain on the way back which was fantastic as it made the forest more alive and gorgeous.

  This is a strenuous hike that is not suitable for people who have any mobility problems. But that's not what spoiled it. The walk is beautiful, but our specific guide rushed us, told us off for stopping 5 seconds to pick up litter, and finally left us and vanished. Thankfully a different guide pointed out we were about to pick the wrong path. Frankly, I thought he was drunk. So if you get another guide you'll have a wonderful time.
