The Ruta de Agua Acueducto Romano de Peña Cortada stands as an iconic trail in the Valencian region for good reason. This picturesque route seamlessly blends three elements: a delightful riverside stroll, the charming white village of Chelva, and the awe-inspiring 2000-year-old Roman Viaduct with its intricate tunnel system.

Calles
Our journey starts with a relaxing coffee in the delightful village of Calles, a hidden gem nestled in the Spanish countryside. Stroll through its charming streets and take in the sights, including the impressive historic church and the quirky, much-loved “Frog Fountain”, a favorite among locals and visitors alike. It’s the perfect way to ease into the day and soak up the authentic charm of rural Spain.
Ruta del agua
We begin our walk along the Fluvial section, a stunning riverside trail where you’ll experience the beauty of fast-flowing rapids, the refreshing sounds of nature, and rich historical sights. Along the way, we’ll visit a 19th-century mill that hides a surprising and colorful mural inside, and explore ancient caves once used for food storage during the Arabic era—an atmospheric step back in time. Fantastic experience! I have done several excursions with Howard in the Valencian Community over the years including the Roman Aqueduct and enjoyed every one of them. Howard is organised and knowledgeable and makes everyone feel relaxed and welcoming. The small group size is perfect, and starting the day with a coffee sets the social, friendly vibe. I especially love the combination of hiking with interesting sightseeing along the way, like castles, ruins, and local curiosities. The tours are well thought out and Howard is an easy going yet responsible guide who genuinely enjoys what he does. Highly recommended!

Love this club. Howard has a small van with 8 hikers plus himself. Not only does he know the trails, he also knows the history, the terrain, is open to questions and conversations, and shares his own stories. I will continue to hike with this group as much as possible.

What a great hike! The route has a little bit of everything; ascents, descents, sweeping vistas and a beautiful river. Not to mention the aqueduct itself and the great company. I will definitely take this hike again.

I have been on this and many other hikes run by Howard from the Valencia Excursions Club and can honestly say I've loved them all. I was lucky enough to have this group recommended to me when I first moved to live in Valencia and I still go out with them as often as I can. I love that the hikes are a chance to meet new people and are not just a frog march. They start with a coffee and tostada in a small village and finish with a well earned drink at the end. These hikes are for me the perfect balance of social, history, exercise and discovering small villages and beautiful countryside and coastal trails that I would otherwise never know about. I can recommend them wholeheartedly.

I have done many hikes with Excursions of Valencia, and the Water Route is the best. I've done it three times. Howard is a professional and relaxed leader, and we always have a good time!

Howard was very kind and full of knowledge of this area. He looked after us all and paced the walk to suit our needs. The town Chelva was fun to walk around and Howard ensured we had a nice lunch. He is a great guide!

A beautifully scenic hike with lots of variety. It was a bit scary to cross the aqueduct but also a bit of a thrill. It’s not really dangerous as it’s as it’s wider than a sidewalk, but still unnerving. Howard was a great guide, providing lots of information about the history of the area as well as being good fun to hangout with. The swimming hole along the Ruta de Agua was an idyllic little place to jump in and cool off for a bit.

This hike was amazing. The scenery was great and walking through Chelva was like stepping back in time. Our guide, Howard, was a wealth of knowledge and so fun to talk to. You do need to really be prepared to hike - I think it was about 9 miles! Would absolutely book a tour with them again.
