Our hosts, Mieko and Haruka, a delightful mother-daughter team, made us feel welcome and comfortable from the moment we stepped into their kitchen. It was just my wufe and me with our hosts. It was so much fun contributing to the preparation of our four-course meal. We got to practice our knife skills and learn about all kinds of interesting Japanese vegetables, sauces, herbs, etc. Haruka helped with translation and served as hostess. The meal included Shabu shabu, thin slices of beef that one cooks in a broth filled with the veggies that we help cut up, scallops that we seared with a chef's blow torch, tempura veggies, and three kinds of sashimi in a wonderful sauce, served over rice. We also sampled Japanese beer and two kinds of sake. We had a wonderful conversation over our food because it turns out they had lived 1-1/4 hours from us in CT for five years! We were so glad to have done this experience; it was certainly one of the highlights of our 12 days in Japan!

My friend and I had a wonderful time preparing our lunch in Grandma’s Kitchen. Our hosts were so warm and welcoming, it felt like family. We prepared a variety of dishes, using all natural, pesticide-free ingredients. I’ll just elaborate on two of them. We made a marinated scallop dish, slicing and arranging the scallops, cucumber, tomatoes after Grandma modeled for us. We arranged our own bowls of Chirashi Sushi over rice, slicing ingredients including a Japanese omelet and fresh herbs. We made a salad of romaine, new spring onions, pickled shallots and radish greens with a sesame dressing. More dishes included Kushi-Katsu, Unagi and a wheat-based noodle bowl with homemade dashi. Everything we made and ate, we can make on our own at home. I can’t wait to purchase a new Japanese knife for slicing in my own kitchen. We ate with our hosts, drank a little sake and talked! This was an unforgettable experience that will bring a smile whenever I think about it.

I love to do cooking excursions and I am soooo thrilled that we booked this one! They limit the participants to 8, but today it was just my friend and I and we had the most delicious and fun time. Hakura and her mom were welcoming and friendly and mom guided us, step by step, through a genuine home meal experience. We made scallops marinated in a homemade dressing, a salad of greens, spring onions, pickled shallots, Chirashi Sushi - which is a bowl of amazing pesticide free rice, topped by a variety of sashimi, roe, pieces of Japanese omelet, herbs, and cucumber. Under direction, we skewered fresh vegetables that were dredged in a tempura flour and egg mix, then breadcrumbs and then fried in sesame oil. There was also pork, shrimp, and scallop tempura on skewers. To finish out the meal we had unagi- eel and a thin noodle dish with dashi. Everything was so fresh and delicious. The scallops were sweet and plated with thinly sliced cucumber and pop in your mouth fresh cherry tomatoes. The salad was so good I almost did what I never do - finish all of it. The Chirashi Sushi had tuna, yellow fin, red snapper, and more. It was way more food than I could eat and I made my portions small ! I can’t recommend it enough!
