• An epic whale watch experience!

  Oh, what a wonderful experience. The Artemis was fast, so we could get quickly to the areas where the whales were. The boat was smaller than the whale watch boats we’ve been on in the past, and we really enjoyed the smaller group size. Crew was knowledgeable, helpful, professional. We saw dolphins and many, many Mom/baby pairs. We highly recommend Hawaiian Adventures.

  What a great day on the ocean with Hawaiian Adventures! The weather was clear enough to see Maui on our trip, with light ocean breezes, essentially the perfect day for a trip like this! We arrived as instructed (google link for directions which was sent was spot on), and waited for checkin and boarding to begin, which again, was right on time as indicated. Once on board, after a quick safety briefing, we departed. The main deck of the vessel had 32 seats, and upstairs had approximately 8 more. The vessel was extremely clean, which was fantastic. There is a Head (restroom) on the vessel, which we did not utilize, but it was available, and assume also it was clean. Soft drinks were kept in a cooler for guests (a serve yourself basis), again, it too was clean. We cruised for about 45 minutes before we spotted the first humpbacks, once spotted, we trolled for about 20 minutes or so watching the 3 males have an aggressive battle. After this, we continued north and found another juvenile whale learning how to float. He was curious of us, and ended up about 10 yards from our vessel. Amazing to see a humpback that close to us. The crew were extremely polite, knowledgeable about the marine life, and helpful in all aspects of the excursion. The 4th crew member, Falcon, was the absolute best at being helpful for watching for marine life, and he let you know when there was something nearby! Thank you very much for such a memorable day on the water, watching Humpbacks and enjoying the Hawaiian waters! 10/10 would recommend and travel with this company again! Any friends of mine who plan to travel to the Big Island, will be getting this company's name from me!

  Our humpback whale watching tour with Hawaiian Adventures Kona was absolutely fantastic. Seeing whales in real life is an entirely different experience than watching them on video — it was truly awe-inspiring. The boat, the Artemis, was very comfortable and offered excellent viewing opportunities. We chose to sit on the second deck, which provided outstanding visibility. The vessel was well-equipped with restrooms, and drinks were provided, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The crew of three was exceptional and included a knowledgeable naturalist. Both the captain and the naturalist shared a wealth of information about humpback whales and were happy to answer my many questions. Their enthusiasm and expertise added so much depth to the tour. We were fortunate to see several whales and even had one surface quite close to the boat — an unforgettable moment. In addition to the whales, we also saw a pod of Hawaiian spinner dolphins, stopped near an offshore fish farm and learned how it operates, and observed numerous schools of fish in the harbor, especially as we returned to the dock. The trip was filled with marine life from start to finish. We highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Big Island during whale season.

  My wife and I took this tour with another couple who have been on several other whale watching tours in both Hawai'i and Alaska. This was a great trip. We first saw a large pod of spinner dolphins as we exited the harbor and had a great experience watching them. After leaving the dolphins, we traveled north up the coast, and saw at least 8 humpback whales, including a cow (female) and her calf. They were in very shallow water (for a large mammal) and were very active. There were two male whales who seemed interested in the cow/calf pair, and they exhibited their typical male whale behavior until it became apparent that the female was showing absolutely no interest in them and they swam off. Later, we saw other whales rolling and doing their fin slap- no breaches on this trip, but all in all, a great experience. Besides the sea life, this trip really gives an interesting view of the shoreline with its lava fields, mountain views and the remnant volcano cones. Would definitely recommend this trip.

  Excellent all the way around. I always take visiting friends on this boat to whale watch. Knowledgeable crew. Amazing boat. Highly recommend.

• Humpbacks in February

  This trip was our second. We took the tour in 2025 in April and saw many different dolphins and whales but only a lone humpback since it was well past peak season in mid April. This year we came in mid February and saw a number of humpback whales as well as spinner dolphins. I left a tip for the crew to give to the whales for their performance. How they accomplish that is up to them :).

  It was a beautiful morning for the Humpback Whale Watch. We saw a whale breach as soon as we left the inlet. Whale sightings continued as two curious whales decided to swim under the boat and around the boat. We also saw bottlenose dolphins and spinner dolphins. It was an amazing experience. We highly recommend this whale watching cruise…..well worth the price!

  The boat, Artemis, was custom designed for whale watching which is evident in the comfortable seats, Upper Deck, and easy viewing. The captain and the naturalist were very knowledgeable and willing to answer all of our questions, which were many. Just as we left the dock, a pod of spinner dolphins greeted us. Shortly after that, we encountered three humpback whales which we followed respectfully, from of distance, for a period of time. We then headed north along the coast and found whales breaching and tail slapping. Fantastic. I would not want to go in a smaller boat up the coast, as the sea got a bit rougher. On the way back, we viewed the fish farm which had bottlenose dolphins surrounding it, trying to steal the fish. We then continued South where we encountered three humpback whales. The guess was that the lead whale was a female being pursued by two males. The two males were showing off. We got to see the head of the whale coming out of the water, which is unusual, and pectoral fin slapping. It was amazing. We had a wonderful day and would highly recommend Hawaiian Adventures for whale watching.
