Definitely fun to go and see the whales, however the boat will have lots of people on it. Two people got sick while on the cruise and one woman keep grabbing the back of my seat to stay steady. I'm glad we didn't stop at the winery, that was of no interest to me. I don't how the other tour companies are, this was overall a pleasant experience and I really enjoyed all the information and presentation in-between the whale sightings.

I would definitely recommend this trip…it was well organised and I was collected and dropped off at my hotel by the fabulous and very knowledgeable Judy, in an air-conditioned mini bus. There was only myself and another couple on the way there as another couple had made there own way to Kaikoura, however they travelled back with us. The journey to Kaikoura took 2 1/2-3 hours but included a quick comfort break with the opportunity to buy breakfast and a drink to eat in the bus and we also pulled over having spotted dolphins….the scenery was lovely so all good and Judy was informative throughout, pointing out points of interest and any relevant history in the area, as well as what to expect when we arrived at Kaikoura. I was aware that the whale boat sailing does not always go ahead but luckily for me it did. I was not disappointed and the Captain Melena (not sure if I’ve got that right) and crew, were welcoming, pleasant and very informative…and managed to take us to 4 different Sperm Whales! On boarding the boat we initially had to sit inside and watch a safety video, but on our first sighting of a whale, were able to stand outside to get a closer look and take pics etc…it was amazing to see the Sperm Whales in their natural habitat and a true privilege. I would recommend wearing trousers/jeans and layers but taking shorts to get changed into to wander round Kaikoura later on. There’s quite a few shops and eateries in the town and I enjoyed browsing…I really enjoyed a rum n raisin ice cream at the first ice cream shop on the right as you enter the town…very creamy/tasty. They also sell real fruit ice cream which I was told were worth a try. On leaving the town we headed for the seal colony which was a rocky area by the sea and very picturesque; we managed to see 3 seals :) We also stopped off at another seal colony and saw loads of seals which was great. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and would in fact do it all again in the future!

Our whale watching tour got canceled today due to rainy weather. But our tour guide, Jude, was FANTASTIC. She drove us to some extra places to see fur seals and we also got a delicious lunch in a small town. She also drove us to a winery, and we all got to sample some wonderful New Zealand wines. So, a big Thank you, to Jude who made our tour wonderful, even though the whale watching got canceled. She was the BEST tour guide ever!!!! Thank you so much, Jude.

From the pick-up, whale watching and the return transport everything worked great. The driver was great and gave a lot of information about Christchurch as well as about the destination Kaikoura.

We had a great day on our whale watching tour. Carmen picked us up at our hotel on time. She provided narration during part of the drive which we found very informative. Before the whale watching boat, we stopped for lunch. We then went out on the whale watching boat where we saw two sperm whales during the boat ride. Carmen was waiting for us when the boat docked. From there, she drove us back to Christchurch. We felt safe the entire day and enjoyed getting to see the sperm whales!

I recommend it. A known risk of buying tickets for whale watching is that you might not see any whales. In our case, due to rough seas, we actually couldn’t go out far enough to see whales, so it became a dolphin watching experience. They were fun. We got a 50% discount on the whale watching portion of our total cost, and were given the option to cancel on the spot (not get on the boat) and get a full refund of the whale watching ticket. But you’re still paying the full cost of transportation to and from Kaikoura. Our driver and guide, Stephanie, of Ideal Tours, got us to Kaikoura and back to Christchurch, providing a lot of interesting information along the way.

This is not a tour - it is simply transport to the whale watching boat by bus from Christchurch to Kaikoura (about 2.5 hours away). There is also no wine tour included, despite it being stated on the Viator page. No explanation was provided by the tour company for this. After whale watching we had to wait 3 hours for part of our tour to return from swimming with dolphins. No alternative activity was provided for us (other than spending 15-30 minutes looking at sea lions on a nearby beach). We sat in a parking lot for an hour waiting for the rest of our group to return before heading back. It would have been nice to have been allowed to explore the town. Ultimately, I recommend to all that you either bus/drive to Kaikoura yourself. It is easy and will save you hours of time.

Pete was a great guide who gave lots of relevant information and was accommodating to the needs of the kids. Comfortable ride to see the whales. Good that we didn’t drive on our own as some had sea sickness after the cruise.
